Rating: Summary: Late Into the Night Review: When I read one of Brockmann's books, I end up reading Late, Late, Into the Night. The first book I ever read from this author was a frustrating experience. She has her own unique writing style. I found that I was sitting on the edge of my seat being switched back and forth between several sets of characters. When I finished that particular book, I thought, "Whew! It is over, what a ride!" The frustration was secondary to following the suspense of one charactor/plot and then a swith to a different character/plot that was equally as suspensful, within the story. Then I realized, that story kept me riveted throughout all 300+ pages (that is unusual), like driving down the LA freeway during rush hour! I couldn't find any weak spots in the entire book. I immediately wanted to read the next book. So... I bought the next book in the series, and the next and the next. This is one of my favorite authors! She has such insight to "the human psyche" You become the characters, through their thoughts. Five stars
Rating: Summary: My second favorite Navy Seal story.. Review: This is my second favorite among the five Navy Seal books, after Over the Edge. I didn't think I would find Muldoon to be very credible as a hunky hero, since he was depicted as such a baby-faced, goody-goody innocent in the other books. So I was pleasantly surprised to find his character compelling. To learn that, in spite of his incredible looks, he had his own justifiable, believable insecurities made him all the more likeable. He was so open and honest with Joan, and made her feel so sexy and desirable. On the other hand, I loved Joan's sense of humor, but her character was very irritating. Her issue over their age difference became silly, and she was so mean to him at times. If she had been my friend, I would have slapped her for be so immature and neurotic. A gorgeous Navy Seal wants you, woman!! What are you quibbling about?!!! As I've written in reviews of the other Seal novels, I have tired of the WWII aspect, as well as the need to include so many subplots. This author has to find a way to keep the main love story flowing, because the way she breaks up the main story with the subplots is too distracting.Just as I wanted to slap Joan, I wanted to slap her grandmother Charlotte. These two women definitely ended up with wonderful men they didn't deserve. To think, for the 60 years of her marriage, Charlotte never bothered to tell her husband that she wasn't still in love with her first husband who was killed in the war. So that poor man lived 60 years thinking he was her second choice, who she had to marry because she was pregnant. After I read that, I just could feel no sympathy for Charlotte.
Rating: Summary: Passable, wouldn't reread Review: This was my first book in the series to read, and I wish I had not bothered. Brockmann kept flipping between three different stories, and it broke the flow of the novel. Just when I had started to get interested in one set of characters, the book would switch back to one of the other sets. I started skipping entire chapters and going back later just so I could follow a complete story line to a more natural break. By the end, I just didn't care what happened, I just wanted it to be over.
Rating: Summary: Not the best... Review: This was my first Brockmann novel and it intrigued me enough to go out and buy the rest. This led me to my peeve with Suzanne Brockmann--she goes to such painstaking effort to realistically describe the SEAL team and their endeavors, but leaves her attention to detail behind in developing her characters. Mike Muldoon does not age. In Over the Edge, Muldoon is 25 years old. Now nearly two years later (based on the fact that Starretts baby is 18 months old) Muldoon is still 25 years old. Nevertheless, I enjoyed the love story ( what there was of it) between Mike and Joan. There seemed to be alot of bouncing around--hard to keep interest in characters. I definitely recommend the other books in this series over Into the Night.
Rating: Summary: The stars are all for Michael!! Review: Suzanne Brockmann writes the best men in the business. She makes her SEALs larger than life, with descriptions that make them step off the pages(I wish!). Unfortunately, many times her female characters are not so well defined. In this book, I didn't even find her female lead likable. I found Joan strident and too coarse. It is a personal preference, I know, but, I prefer heroines who are a little more ladylike. Joan didn't sound like a prize. I got a mental picture of someone who was not too attractive and I kept wondering why: #1-- Mike Muldoon would even look at her and #2-- why she didn't grab him and run. I mean-would you let someone like Mike marry you and then live on another coast? It seems like her whole family was out west. Her job was back east. Let's see--the president or Mike? The president or Mike? For her, it should have been an easy choice. I think authors really have to watch their descriptions. I really couldn't picture her as halfway attractive and being capable of knocking Mike off his feet. Brockmann's men are always tremendous. The humor in her books is good and she keeps the excitement level high. I enjoyed reading about her other characters and liked Charlie and Vince's story. I thought Joan's brother was another reason Mike should have run far, far away from Joan! I really liked and was drawn into Mary Lou's story. I hope it turns out good for her. Can't say the same about Sam. She could skip his story. I didn't care for him in this book at all. Bottom line--I love Suzanne Brockmann's descriptions of Navy SEAL lives and loves. She makes those SEALs sizzle. Unfortunately, the female heroine in Into the Night almost deep-sixed this book.
Rating: Summary: Audiobook Review Review: I'll qualify this review by admitting that I'm a Brockmann fan. Even so, a bad reader can ruin a good book. Thankfully, that's not the case here. This is an excellent audio interpretation of a good book! Even though I read the book when it first came out, listening to the story brought a new perspective. Reader/actress Laura Hicks brings the characters to life. She keeps the story moving, and her interpretation of the most of the characters' voices was very close to what I imagined when I read this book (Mary Lou's Texas accent is a bit thicker than in my imagination). Ms. Hicks' timing, accents, and dramatic emphasis enhance the story but are not intrusive. According to author, Suzanne Brockmann, BBC Audio may be producing some of her earlier works. Hopefully, they'll use the same reader. If so, they'll be on my shopping list!
Rating: Summary: Excellent Continuation of her Seal Team 16 Series Review: Ever since I read Suzanne Brockmann's The Defiant Hero, I have been a fan of hers. I relish a good read featuring strong, capable women, sexy, yet imperfect, men and a suspenseful story line. Brockmann delivers with believable characters, witty dialogue and interesting story lines. In her Seal Team 16 series she weaves sub-plots featuring secondary characters involved in WWII into the main story. I like the way she ties the past into the current story and the sub-plot in this book is an especially poignant one. Since her books in this series revolve around a character in Seal Team 16, characters from her previous books make appearances. For those of us who have read the previous books, it is fun to see how the previous characters and their love interests develop. Two of her characters, Sam Starrett and Alyssa Locke, have had an ongoing and unresolved love affair throughout her past books and Brockmann addresses this again in this book. Sam's wife, Mary Lou, is a main character in this book and her story almost overshadows the main story between Muldoon and Da Costa. For this reason, I would suggest to anyone interested in this book, to start with a prior one in the series, which will make the story that much better. I like Suzanne's realistic depiction of the men and women in her stories, both in their physicality and character. I enjoy reading her stories for the action, the suspense, and the spicy relationships between her lead characters: interesting, vibrant women and hunky, strong guys who have vulnerabilities and weaknesses, but who can also kick ass! This is not the best book in the series but enjoyable none-the- less and has me anticipating the next one!
Rating: Summary: My first Suzanne Brockmann read.... Review: I read the book, then came here and read reviews - and I have to say I feel better that I came away from reading it with mixed feelings. On the one hand, the interwoven substories kept me turning the pages to find out what happens next. On the other hand, there were times the story dragged. Some characters were quite full and rich (Mary Lou for example) and others rather cliche. That being said...when I read the teaser for the next book, it made me want to hurry up and get it. I think in the meantime, I'll go find "Out of Control" as another reader here has suggested....
Rating: Summary: Sexy SEALs... need I say more? Review: Ms. Brockmann does it again! She continues her action-filled adventures of the US Navy SEAL Team known as the "Troubleshooters," and proves once again her amazing ability to weave threads of several stories, each with its own surprises and suspenseful action. I love the flash-backs to WWII and tales of love from that era. It's just an added treat that makes each book more than just a single romance novel. If you've never read any of her books, I wouldn't recommend this book as the first Brockmann book to read, NOT because it isn't worthy -- It IS a great book! -- No, I say this only because it's the middle of a series; it drops you in the middle of the action... in the middle of some relationships that have steadily developed over the course of her "Troubleshooters" books. Although Brockmann is talented enough to provide the required background so things are not confusing, this book's better when viewed as part of the whole on-going SEAL Team adventures. The book contains multiple plots, which can appear to slow things down as far as the main love story is concerned. There's the main plot of Mike and Joan, Sam's tumultuous love-triangle with his wife from a forced-marriage and the FBI agent/former lover who is his true love, and of course Brockmann's trademark WWII love story provided this time by Joan's grandparent's. Admittedly, the book is packed and at least one plot line will leave you hanging... So, I recommend for the best treat, start at the beginning with Unsung Hero. (#2 is Defiant Hero, #3 is Over the Edge, #4 is Out of Control, and then #5 Into the Night). This way, you can really get to the know her characters and follow their progress. The main characters you meet in books 1-4 all make appearances in 5, so it helps knowing their history. And with each book, you'll come to love this team of men and enjoy watching their adventures. They'll certainly make you laugh, bring you to tears, and make you grit your teeth! As far as the main plot, it is about Lt JG Mike Muldoon: the Goody-two-shoes of the SEALS team ... and I only say that, because well "Gosh" he's such a NICE guy! He made a rather kissable appearance in book 4, that made me want to see him find his own true love... and for once, have to work for it! :) But he's also 100% Navy SEAL, which means he's a full-grown man, strong enough to be this novel's hero and one that won't "ring the bell" and quit until he captures true love with the woman he wants... even if it means scaling over her own heart's protective walls. ... Now, as for that cliff-hanger... #6 "Gone Too Far" is available now in hardcover and picks up at the cliff's edge! Ms Brockmann, you (and your SEALS) have me hooked; keep up the good work!
Rating: Summary: Not very exciting... Review: I usually like Suzanne Brockmann's books because of the interwoven stories. Not this one! 1. I did not like the two main characters. Both seemed to need maturing. 2. Sam really was irritating- when he was in the story. 3. The WW2 addition to her story was unexciting, and I was glad there was very little of it. 4. The plot was slow. Surprisingly, the character I did like was Marylou. I hope she comes to a happy ending in the next story.
