Rating: Summary: Good, but not the best! Review: I had been impatiently waiting for this book to come out but did not have a chance to buy it until Saturday. I adore this author, and I think she did great on this book except for a few things. First, I have to agree with the other reviewers and say that the love scenes were not as steamy as usual. It took so long for Mike and Joan to even kiss. I just did not feel there was a lot of sexual tension. I wish there had been more about Sam and Alyssa, I can't wait for that book to come out! I really liked the WWII secondary story this time. Usually I just kind of skip over them but this one really grabbed my interest. Now, Mary Lou. I did not want to like her but I feel bad for her. She was definitely an interesting aspect to this story. Overall, it was a good book, but not her best. I like this author for her steamy love scenes and there just wasn't enough of that for me. My friend just brought back my copy of "Out of Control" and I will probably reread it along with the others so I can be prepared for Sam and Alyssa's story.
Rating: Summary: Great Addition to the Series Review: I have read all the team sixteen books and they are all wonderful reading adventures. This book works pretty well as a stand alone so no need to worry if you haven't read the others in the series. That being said...if you love this one run, run, run at and get the rest and read them in order. This is not the best in the series (Over the Edge is my fave) but definitely ranks right up there. Compared to other books in this genre though it is a strong 5. Brockmann's books are great for anyone who likes their books with a mix of romance, action and suspence. I was never huge fan of military style books and while this is definitely set in that world it isn't over-powering. The sneak peek at the next book in the series is a killer and it definitely increases the anticaption level for the next book that will finally wrap up an on-going romance between two secondary characters.
Rating: Summary: How long till July? Review: This book was worth the wait. While it wasn't the best of the Troubleshooter series - I STILL COULD NOT PUT IT DOWN! I liked that Joan was a "real woman". I totally relate to only running to the store to get chocolate before it closes!! Her trouble with the age difference did start to get on my nerves though! Mike was a good looking, red blooded male and she was attracted to him! What was the problem? I wouldn't have thought twice about it!! Truck scene was hot!! The WWII story was nice. I was good to learn more about the origins of the SEALs. Like the other reviewer, I also found myself more interested in the secondary characters than in Mike and Joan. I still hate Mary Lou, but I do better understand her. I don't want to understand her or sympathize with her - but I do. She is one confused kid! I still love Sam. He is my all time favorite SEAL! I understood his feelings/fear of being a bad father - I mean, hey, he was trapped into it!! He didn't want it! But he can learn. Kids don't come with an owners manual! And I was glad that he and Alyssa did not have any direct contact in this book. Gave us a break and let some other characters grow. I found myself very interested in Cosmo for some reason! However, that teaser for Sam and Alyssa's book was NOT FAIR!! How long till July??? SUZANNE - CAN I PLEASE BE ONE OF YOUR PROOF READERS???
Rating: Summary: Doesn't top "Out of Control" Review: After the teaser in Out of Control I was expecting a romance between Mike and the French Journalist, which would have been a great story. I had to switch gears to get into Joan and her role as White House staffer. I enjoyed the book, couldn't put it down, but the action and romance wasn't as intense as in previous books. The character development was excellent and I found myself more sympathetic towards Mary Lou and frustrated with Sam. The whole incident with the President's daughter was a bit much and I had a hard time with Joan's brother Donny and his mental illness. It was just too convenient to have him living right next door to Mary Lou and Sam... I mean what are the odds? "Out of Control" remains my favorite.
Rating: Summary: Hey; I like Mary Lou. Review: If you tell the same story enough times you will finally get it right. I think that the patriotism expressed in this novel thinned out the sap this author is known for and made it a worthwhile tale to read. The part that really needed work was creating a 40s feel to the story and the characters. Their patter was too contemporary.
Rating: Summary: How can you pass it up!?! Review: Another winner from Suzanne Brockmann! Mike Muldoon, recovering from an injury gets stuck playing liaison for Joan DeCosta, while she checks out PR opportunities at the Coronado Naval Base. As funny and complicated as that relationship is, Brockmann weaves layers of dark undertones and a myriad of other stories, into each work, that keeps readers on the edge of their seats as well as make those of us who are, proud to be Americans. I'm already anticipating the next book, and the many more I expect will come from this masterful author.
Rating: Summary: The wait is finally over Review: I rushed out to purchase this book ASAP. I began reading at 5:00pm, stopped at 1:00am, (Thanksgiving Eve, I had to have some sleep)and began again at 8:00am and was finished by 9:30. It was great, of course. It's Suzanne Brockman, how could it not be?! I felt like I was checking up on old friends. I thought Mike and Joan were great together. Although their relationship was kind of slow to heat up, but once it finally did... I loved the way he proved his point in the bar and the scene in the truck... I know the windows had to be completly steamed! Then there was Mary Lou. I kept thinking, "No, I don't want to like her. I don't want to feel sorry for her! She broke up Sam and Alyssa." Now, of course I want Marry Lou to find happiness, too. There is a sneak peak at the next book from Ms. Brockman, which is supposed to be Sam and Alyssa's story. It left me hanging by my finger tips and now I have to wait until July! But, I know that once agian, it will be wonderful and worth the wait! I miss these guys already. I may have to pull out my old books and start from the beginning.
Rating: Summary: Great book...but not her best Review: I wish there was a 4.5 star choice. I own all of the Troubleshooters and most of the Tall, Dark and Dangerous series and consider myself to be a die hard fan of either of Brockmann's SEAL novels. I impatiently looked forward to her new book INTO THE NIGHT, especially because I really loved Mike Muldoon as an ancillary character in her other Troubleshooters books. As with all Troubleshooters books, there are several stories running concurrently which eventually intertwine. INTO THE NIGHT is no exception. The WWII story is lovely and well told, and I also really enjoyed getting to know Mary Lou Starett who I really didn't like prior to this book. Brockmann does a great job of creating a sympathetic character who you find yourself identifying with. Her humaness is what makes her so compelling. It also shows a new side of Sam Starett, who is my all time favorite SEAL character the author has written, and not all of that side is pleasant. Also fun is getting to see what our favorite past heroines are up to and how they deal with their husbands' scary jobs. The primary love story, between Mike and Joan DeCosta is well written, but not as dynamic as her other stories. The build up of sexual tension is not up to Brockmann's usual par and when the two finally get together, it's almost anticlimactic, although the scene itself is unbelievably steamy. I found myself rooting for the secondary characters more than the primary characters and have to admit to being a bit disappointed in not getting to see more interaction between Sam and Alyssa Locke, but I guess that the author is just whetting our appetites for her next outing GONE TOO FAR. I would definitely recommend this book, however if I were recommending a Troubleshooters book to someone new to Suzanne Brockmann, I'd choose OUT OF CONTROL or THE UNSUNG HERO, which I think are even better than this novel.
Rating: Summary: The subplot is the best plot here Review: I wouldn't believe it if someone had told me, oh three books ago in this series, that I would be saying "thank goodness for Mary Lou." But while reading this book, that was totally my feeling.
So far, I think this is the weakest of Suzanne Brockmann's very fabulous Navy Seal Team 16 series.
First, I hated Joan. I am sorry, she just did not resonate with me. She was too everything. Too slick, too loud, too sarcastic, too mouthy etc.
Second, I didn't think she and Mike had any chemistry whatsoever. So far we've had some excellent matches whose chemistry just leapt off the pages (Teri/Stan, Tom/Kelly, Nils/Meg and of course Sam/Alyssa) but this one just wasn't working. I kept wondering why he liked her so much. It totally took me out of the story.
Third, the flashback storyline wasn't even interesting at all.
But this book isn't a complete wash and that is all due to what I like to call the Redemption of a Former Seal Groupie named Mary Lou. If you are a die-hard Sam/Alyssa fan, as I am, then Mary Lou is on par with Voldemort in the Harry Potter books. She got knocked up on purpose to grab Sam just as he and Alyssa were finally, finally! getting it together. She has problems with interracial romance, she's a whiner and full of self pity. In short, she was a useless individual and nothing more than a roadblock to Sam and Alyssa's true love. But in this book SB delves under the skin of Mary Lou and we find a flawed, three dimensional character.
Mary Lou does what is necessary to make a good character. She grows. She knows her faults, she's not apologetic but she tries. She soul searches and she finally comes to the realization that you can't make someone love you. I actually went from actively despising this character to liking her. Her struggles and the subplot of the assasination attempt were what made this book even remotely readable.
Read the Mary Lou/assasination plot parts, ignore the rest.
Rating: Summary: Still my favorite series yet Review: I'll have to admit that this did not have as much action & adventure as the others in the SEAL Team Sixteen series... but it didn't stop it from being a 5 star romance read. Yes, I agree that Joan wasn't a perfect human being - but hey.... who is? I, personally, really enjoyed her & Mike's banter & struggles to come to grips with the relationship. SB brought it all together at just the right time for me... I was just begining to have enough of Joan's problems.
As usual, I just loved the remembrances from WWII - those are always the sweetest love stories ever.... thank you so much SB!
Now, I can see why some others that haven't read the series in order are NOT very impressed with Sam.... he didn't make any points with me in this one either. However, there are usually messes in real peoples lives that they have caused, are paying the price for & then have to clean up - that's what is happening with Sam. At least he is working on cleaning it up & as with real life, he's paying the price for his past mistakes.
I'll have to say that I was shocked that this doesn't not have at least 4 1/2 stars... it was a very entertaining romance to me. As usual, I can't wait for the next one.
