Rating: Summary: Pass this one over for another 20's Brit Girl Romance/Comedy Review: I contemplated buying this book, but I am ever so glad that I did not and checked it out of the local library instead. This was horrible. I have never had such difficulty prodding through a book I was supposed to be reading for pleasure. I often found that I wanted to throw the book out the window, but I willed myself to complete it. It's completely predictable. And if you do not have a flair for picking out the obvious, the narrator does that for you. That is probably what bothered me most about the book: the narration. Sometimes the narrator (obviously female) would talk directly to the characters and sometimes directly to the reader. She was chastizing her own characters. I found it rather irksome. I also didn't like the way the action jumped around without tranisitions. It was more a novel of vignettes than plot. Despite some stylistic flaws, there are some true gems. For example:"That's your trouble, darling, you want too much-you want a Ralf Lauren ad for life, but those boys are all gay and babies vomit all the time. It's not so pretty in reality." Well, folks, this book may have been a Ralf Lauren ad in the author's head, but it just didn't translate well in the writing.
Rating: Summary: It is, but it isn't Review: I'm one of those mid-twenty somethings who is really into the Bridget Jones style of books. This was not up to par with Bridget Jones. Usually a voracious reader, I kept picking up this book and setting it down again to read something else. Amy's childish antics grated on my nerves after awhile, and the whole thing was uncommonly predictible it fell completely short of my expectations.
Rating: Summary: Great Book Review: This book is very interesting. I loved it I could not stop laughing.
Rating: Summary: I just couldn't get into this Review: Ho hum .... another book about some shallow 24-year-old who works in publishing, this time as a fashion assistant for Vogue -- in that original setting of London. Her name is Amy and she of course has a friend named Kate. And she likes this cool guy blah blah .... ZZZZZZZZZZZZ.I am sure if I wasn't already fed-up of this genre it might have been an entertaining read, but I was looking for something that would make me think and feel, and the juvenile histrionics of the British lovelorn just is not doing it for me anymore.
Rating: Summary: I dream of Orlando... Review: This book was just what I needed to get me out of my cynical funk. It's a realistic fairytale if that makes any sense. I felt close to the main character Amy because she was ordinary but not full of self-loathing like so many of the [weak] characters in this genre. I wanted to be her even when the going got rough. I thought the background characters of Lulu and Anita were wonderful and developed a mad crush on Orlando...if only...if only life were like this book. And what I realised from reading this is that it can be. You just have to look at things a little differently sometimes...that's Amy's gift. And Miss Naylor's gift too.
Rating: Summary: Don't waste your time or money! Review: If the description on the back of the book would have matched what was inside of the book, I might have liked it. The back of the book describes a breasy light hearted romantic comdey. Unfortunately the book is nothing like the back description, and because of it I did not like this book. I wanted to read this book because it looked funny and at the moment I'm addicted to Brigdet Jones type books. Well, this book is not funny or comprehensive. I had no idea what was going on most of the time and I found Amy, the main character, not likable at all. So like I said save your time and money and get a better book.
Rating: Summary: Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz..... Review: I don't want anyone else to make the mistake I did and purchase this book. It sounded funny and quirky, but this was one of the VERY few books that I gave up on reading. I made it to the fourth chapter and couldn't take anymore. The biggest problem with the book was that it sped from one idea/thought/etc. to another without any transitions or indication of a changed subject. It was like reading a stream of consciousness book without the finely crafted hallmarks of that style. Save your bucks...buy Jemima J. instead!
Rating: Summary: A Bit of a Bore Review: I have never read one of her books before, but being an avid reader and a huge fan of this genre, I decided to give it a go. I usually finish a book within a day or so. This book was so dull that I started reading another book along with it. I am now on my 8th book and I just finished this one. The storyline is a bit familiar; you woman trying to find the love of her life through mix ups and lack of self confidence. Amy is tiresome in her moods and her constant flip flopping. Orlando is not as strong of a character either. I actually got more out of the secondary characters (Lucinda etc) than I did out of the main ones. I think the story could have been better developed and a bit more intriguing than it was. I also never got the seen between she and Lilly other than sheer shock value. I think love scenes, no matter who they are between, should have a reason for them. This seemed to be just tossed in to add to the books volume and Amy's neurosis. I do not recommend reading this book when there are so many better novels of this type out there.
Rating: Summary: Excellent escapism Review: I loved the characters in this book and wanted to move into the world that they live in - it's very easy to identify with Amy the main character, she's scatty and sweet and very real. The story's a bit like Notting Hill but the other way round, the girl falling in love with the hearthrob actor. And who hasn't had that fantasy? Who hasn't wondered what would happen if...? It makes you realise that you can live your dreams, if only through the pages of Ms Naylor's novel.
Rating: Summary: An average book. Definitely NOT B. Johnes and Minty Malone. Review: I wasn't impressed by this book. Why? Because the way it's written could be much better if the author used correct forms of expressing characters' thoughts (e.g. direct speech). The lack of inverted commas makes the book not an "easy-read" but also some kind of exercise-book as you have not only to read and enjoy but look and think: "is it the thought of the author or Amy's thought?" I was often bored by that and by lots of mere words going in loooong paragraphs. Could be much better. I don't even want to keep it or recommend to my friends.
