Rating: Summary: Great Quick Read, The Perfect "Beach Book" Review: I grabbed this book at the bookstore in the Atlanta airport. I was looking for one of those funny, quick reads, that are perfect for the plane or the beach, and I got exactly what I was looking for. This is one of those books that is perfect for people who enjoyed the Bridget Jones and Shopaholic series. The characters are well-rounded, the plot is creative, yet not difficult to follow, and the book in general is fun to read. I highly reccomend this book, especially if you are looking for something to read on vacation. It is a great beach/plane book!
Rating: Summary: Angry employee Review: I read this book out of curiosity and because my friend works for the same company that the author once did. I must admit the book had an easy plot to follow and a nice twist at the end. However, I gave this book 3 out of 5 stars because it found it to get a bit slow at times. I'm not sure if this book has any good substance. If you know someone who works in the magazine industry or know anything that goes on in that field it makes the book a bit more amusing. It's not a book where you can't put down.
Rating: Summary: Write on! Review: Vig Morgan has a pointless job at an inspid fashion magazine that she hates. Naturally, the only way to make things better is by publicly destroying the career of her evil editor-in-chief.This book is nothing if not fun. Instead of assuming (as most chick lit books do) that romance is the only thing on a single woman's mind, FASHIONISTA's romantic subplots are deliciously subtle an unobtrusive. The real story here is about Vig's career, and everyone who's ever had a mind-numbing job can relate. This is every under-appreciated office drone's fantasy about overthrowing her overbearing boss.
Rating: Summary: Funny stuff! Review: I used to work at a magazine like "Fashionista" and this book really hits the nail on the head with it's clever and satirical look at fashion publishing. And it reminded me of why I had to escape! Her characters are beautifully drawn and the wonderful story winds it way through the many quirky facets of the main character's (Vig Morgan) always entertaining life.
Rating: Summary: witty, entertaining--an excellent read Review: I found Fashionistas to be excellent fun from beginning to end--and the satire of the magazine industry to be wonderfully spot-on and insightful. Will definitely recommend to all my friends.
Rating: Summary: Has potential, but... Review: Vig Morgan is a former assistant to a high profile fashion magazine editor who gets caught up in a complex plot. Several of Vig's co-workers enlist her in an attempt to overthrow their editor, the "evil" Jane. Like any good minion coup, there are mix-ups and complications, and Vig even falls in love along the way. This book has incredible potential. Combine this with The Devil Wears Prada, and you'd have a fabulous book. There are thin points within the plot, and some of the characters are not developed the way I would have expected them to be. The ending is a bit outlandish, but I'll let you judge that one for yourselves! All in all, Fashionistas is a fun summer read. Just don't expect -too- much.
Rating: Summary: A little disappointed Review: It feels like every chick lit book out there has something to do with either magazines or fashion. In "Fashionistas", Vig worked as an associate editor for "Fashionistas," a fashion magazine that relied on celebrities and glossy pictures for success. Her immediate supervisor/boss, Jane was an arrogant, snobbish, and who treated everyone around her with no respect whatsoever. Soon, Jane was "recruited" by a few other co-workers who had a plan to overthrow Jane from her "throne." Vig's role in this plan would include getting favor from Alex Keller, the events editor. "Fashionistas" unlike other Red Dress Ink books did not shine because it deals solely with Vig's job as an associate editor. There were hardly any focus on friendships and absolutely none on family. Even though it is nice of the author to pay attention on career but I think it makes the book a bit lopsided as other incredients such as family, friendship and love, also play an equally important role. I agreed with other reviewers who felt that the love side of "Fashionistas" barely exists. This makes the book seems boring at times. In addition, I don't feel that I really know the characters at all, including Vig herself. The writing seems kind of "choppy" and it doesn't flow well. In fact, there are a lot of abrupt endings to each chapters. That being said, the author is extremely knowledgeable about the ins and outs of working for a magazine. I would have given "Fashionistas" a three and half stars if it is possible because the book is really not that bad but I am still a little disappointed. There are definitely better chick lit books out there.
Rating: Summary: Witty, Light Summer Read..Characters a Bit Thin in Places Review: I was entertained by this light read with some very clever turns of phrase. Vig Morgan is a smart, underappreciated associate editor at a fashion magazine that doesn't do the substantive pieces she wants to write. It's lorded over by a tough, rude, ambitious editor-in-chief, Jane, whose character is among the most amusing, if obnoxious, in the book. Vig gets [pulled] into an unlikely but amusing coworker plot involving an avant-garde artist to overthrow Jane, and along the way meets the magazine's mysterious Alex, who's managed to make a charade of his whole job. I would have liked to have seen more scenes between Vig and Alex and how that relationship unfolds, but then I'm a sucker for a romantic subplot. Vig's character is intriguing and smart, but I would have liked to have known more about her as well. Still, the book is great for what it is, and if you bring it to the beach with you this summer I don't think you'll be disappointed. It's a funny satire of the whole shallow fashion magazine industry, and may make you question why we women buy the things as much as we do. But we probably take them the way you'll take this book..not too seriously. - Julia Wilkinson, author, My Life at AOL
Rating: Summary: Light read Review: Although the book was a little slow at times, it had a very interesting outcome and was an enjoyable read. The only thing that I can critique was that the outcome of the "plan" was VERY predictable. Otherwise, a fun read!
Rating: Summary: Very unrealistic plot against boss but an ok read Review: I thought the whole plot against the boss at the top was absurd, but it also shows how some women will do anything to get ahead. The book was somewhat amusing though as the girls go through this journey of ousting the "queen at the top", but I would rate as one the OK reads. This is definitely not the best RDI book to date.
