Rating: Summary: A lot of fun Review: This book is a lot of fun (I, too, laughed out loud and that rarely happens to me when I read). I liked the story's structure: the main plot is every overlooked employee's fantasy about a bloodless coup and the colorful "snapshots" that are interspersed throughout give you an understanding of the main character's personal and inner life. Overall, terrific!
Rating: Summary: Amusing as a comedy club... Review: I read in a self-publishing book once that the cover can sell the book. I guess it's true because I picked this book up because of the jazzy cover. Very chique. Then I flipped through the book and started giggling. By the time I got through a couple chapters, I was shaking my head and cracking up. This writer is hilarious in the best way--with that dry wit that you don't realize is an insult when it sounds like a joke. I loved this book and I will definitely buy more! Thanks, Ms./Mrs. Lynn Messina!
Rating: Summary: Fast and Funny Review: Fasghionistas is a great, fun, satsifying read. I laughed out loud repeatedly which I never do, not ever, even when it says on the back of the book that I'm going to laugh out loud. The book has great narrative flow - I always wanted to know what was going to happen next and stayed up late turning pages. I found myself pulling it out of my bag whenever I had a spare moment, including when I was walking down the street. The short chapters make it easy to digest in small bites whenever you get a second. The characters are fun and likeable and the story keeps moving along. Great for the beach, or just an escape from your everyday life.
Rating: Summary: A hoot & a half... Review: This book is really funny. I mean, laugh out loud funny. The characters are totally likeable. It's the smartest, wittiest book I've read this year. This fiscal year, that is. Can't wait to read her next one.
Rating: Summary: amusing insider¿s skewing of the publishing industry Review: For five years Vig Morgan has worked on Fashionistas, a magazine devoted to telling readers nothing about celebrity fashion. Vig survived a maniac boss and is now an associate editor in a pool of killer sharks also known as peers.A new Editor in Chief Marguerite with a zillion other names lifted from her ex spouses Holland takes charge. Ruthless Jane McNeil is irate because she felt the job should have been hers. Other associates want Vig to be the point of the revolution because publisher Alex Keller owes her for what she did for his sister. Business life could not prove more meaningful for Vig as her work proves Seinfeld had purpose. FASHIONISTAS is an amusing insider's skewing of the publishing industry. The story line is humorous and at times very satirical especially when the heroine provides vigor to the tale. Vig is a delightful character while the support cast will leave the audience shaking their heads. Lynn Messina delightful moves Office Space from a financial realm to the publishing world with the same jabbing shots that will mean the author needs to succeed as a novelist because retreat rights across the bridge seem nuked. Rating: Summary: Very funny insider story of fashion magazine world Review: Lynn Messina's witty observations of the personalities and personal pecadillos of her characters had me chuckling all the way though and gave me flashbacks to my own stint at a popular British fashion magazine. I found her dark humor very enjoyable. She has a wonderful eye for details and a very original way of describing them. A fun read.
Rating: Summary: Fashionistas Review: Love, love, love this book!! Great characters, plot, and surprise ending. If you liked Devil Wears Prada, you'll love this!
Rating: Summary: magazine dreams Review: This book is especially entertaining if you ever dreamt of how glamorous it might be to work for a high fashion magazine. Apparantly the author dreamt it, lived it, and realized how much more rewarding it would be to fulfill that "writer" dream instead. Lynn Messina has an intelligent knack for characterization and a very deft ear for prose. She is a very skilled writer who doesn't condescend or pander to the genre she's writing in. As the other reviewers point out the "non-boyfriend" relationship is a little unfullfilling but most single girls who've spent any length of time in big cities may be able to relate.
I'll be curious to see how the movie with Lindsay Lohan turns out. I'd be surprised if it were nearly as fun as the book, but I'm happy for Lynn Messina's success. A writer as sharp, down to earth and witty as she is certainly deserves it.
Rating: Summary: Quick and witty but falls short Review: I had heard that this book compared to "The Devil Wears Prada," which I'd read and loved early last year. However, I found that although "Fashionistas" was witty and a quick read, the main character was extremely dull, flat and unrelatable; she sparked absolutely no emotion in me while I was reading the book.
If you like books like this, stick with "The Devil Wears Prada," "The Nanny Diaries," and "Citizen Girl."
Rating: Summary: Beautifully crafted prose Review: I think the cartoon-cover, hyper-girlie marketing of this book has the potential to mislead readers; the writing here is much more sophisticated and colorful than your typical girl-in-frustrating-magazine-job novel. The characters are sparkling and the story-line kept me turning the pages. Fashionistas really stands out.
