Rating: Summary: Awful Book Review: After reading some of the other reviews of this book I can only conclude that there are a lot of people who get turned on by the thought of a thirty-five year old man raping a seventeen year old girl and then spanking her until she's black and blue. I'm not upset because this book isn't PC,I'm upset because this book is glorifying the sad reality that some women face everyday. Ask any woman who has ever been raped or any woman who is involved in an abusive reationship and they'll tell you-there is nothing romantic about it.
Rating: Summary: An accurate portrayal of a pirate!!! Review: First of all, I am surprised at all of the negative reviews regarding Island Flame. I read this book at least a dozen times and really enjoyed it. The time period is 1842 and it was a pretty violent time for women. Especially beautiful women like Lady Catherine Aldley. She is heading home from Portugal when her ship is suddenly attacked by pirates. Pirate Captain Jonathan Hale takes one look at blonde Catherine's radiant beauty and claims her for his very own. But Catherine isn't your typical captive. She is headstrong, spoiled and unwilling to become any pirate's play-thing. She fights him at every turn changing his lust into something more powerful. He carries her off to the pirate island of Las Palmas where their desire and love for each other bloom. Troubled times await the lovers as their paradise hideaway is attacked and the pirate captain is taken captive. Island Flame was a very good story. Very accurate for the times. Beautiful women were at the mercy of powerful men and there is no man more powerful than pirate Captain Jon Hale. Pirates took what they wanted without any remorse and Jon Hale is no exception. He is consumed with lust for the beautiful Catherine. He wants her with a fierceness that astounds him and he does take her. Yet, Catherine's spirit and beauty prove deadly to him. She proves to be more than a mere passing fancy as she effortless melts his icy heart. Give Island Flame a chance. You will not be disappointed.
Rating: Summary: Her worst book Review: I actually had to put this book down after several attempts to read it. I have read almost all of Robards' books and usually love them. The heroine is raped on several occasions, by the hero. Doesn't matter that the story took place in the 19th century, Robards glorified rape. On the first rape, the man partly seduced the girl, then raped her; Robards portrayed the rape in a sensual way. On the last rape, Robards described the man as stabbing in and out of her intentionally as punishment for an imagined wrong. The heroine accepts the concept that she deserved to be hurt in this manner, because she "supposedly" hurt the hero. We have enough to deal with in real rape cases, with the victim feeling to blame. We don't need that damaging concept perpetuated in a romance novel. The "hero" also physically struck the heroine on several occasions. Spanking her, striking her in other ways. I couldn't find anything redeeming in his character. He was obnoxious and not likable. I'm very disappointed in Karen Robards for writing this book.
Rating: Summary: Don't judge Karen Robards by this book Review: I am a real Karen Robards fan, and was shocked at how TERRIBLE this book was. I could not get past the numerous rapes and beatings. Even when Kathy saves Jon from hanging, his first words to her are abusive. I couldn't even figure that scene out. He kissed her goodbye, got captured, she saves him from the hangman, and he calls her a -itch! I don't even think it was because he had to marry her. He had been thinking of marrying her already. Then the final rape scene at nearly the end of the book was the worst of all. She had born him a son, and this is how he treats her? I read romance novels all the time. I'm accustomed to the brooding, anti social heroes who eventually learn to love, but the rapes and physical abuse in this book were horrible. It has nothing to do with being PC and everything to do with enjoying romance stories because the heroes are sexy and/or attractive. I wouldn't let this man near me with a 10 foot pole. Karen Robards is a GREAT author, but do NOT read this book. Get her "One Summer" if you want a great love story.
Rating: Summary: Not my type of 'romance'.... Review: I fully understand that women were looked at much else besides bodies, ect, in this time period, but this book didn;t appeal to me. I don't usually get offended, actually its hard to offend me, but Jonathan (the pirate) is so abusive and careless with Catherine, it was hard to even believe he loved her at all. I tried so hard to look past his brutishness for the sake of it being 1845 and him having a rough childhood, but I just could'nt accept that he ever loved her or ever would. He seemed to be taking his aggressions and past aggressions and anger that had nothing to do with her out on her. It never stopped, not once. She loved him and did all she could for him selflessly and he still took things out on her. I could not warm up to him no matter how hard I tried. I was wishing she would've escaped and he would've been hanged, sorry, just being honest. The sequel to this is 'Sea Fire'... Tracy Talley~@
Rating: Summary: Worst book I have ever read!!! Review: I have read a lot of books in my life, and this book was one of the worst! I can't believe people declare it as romantic!! The heroin is repeatedly and brutally raped throughout the whole book, and to make matters worse, she thinks she has asked for it and that it is actually enjoyable! This book is pretty twisted, and left me feeling just plain sick! I hope no young women read it and think this is ok! If you want good romance, don't read this!
Rating: Summary: Love this book Review: I have read this book over and over and every time it leaves me understanding the book a little more. I do disagree with Jon's rape of Cathy but this love story show that love can survive and flurish even when it starts with blinding hate.
Rating: Summary: It's a favorite Review: I know that there are people who were (or will be) insulted and unhappy with the tone of the book. Yes, there were rape scenes. But, I also felt the love that Jonathan had for Cathy, and obviously she did too, for her to be so in love with him after all she went through. He did not have an easy childhood either, which is why he finds it so hard to believe that Cathy loves him. I thought the book was incredibly written, and I've read it repeatedly. The fact that they survived and overcame all the obstacles that were thrown their way is a true testament of LOVE.
Rating: Summary: Major disappointment Review: I liked all the other books that I read by Ms.Robards, but this one is a let down. I do not understand how the characters can claim to love each other, when all they do is hurt each other. The rape was unforgivable. Usually I enjoy and savor the books that are written by Robards, but I couldn't wait to get through this one and read something else more interesting. My advice read her other books but skipp this one.
Rating: Summary: The only one Review: I love Karen Robards' novels and don't let this one keep you from getting all the others but i must say this one was a disappointment. I kept waiting for him(jon) to actually make love to her but i reached halfway through but he never did i could not even finish it but i reccomend all the other karen Robards books, she is the only reason i am buying of the internet since i cannot find all her books elsewhere.
