Rating: Summary: A super voice for Scottish Historicals Review: I am a Scot, and I love history, so I am rather picky on Scottish Historicals. I nearly cringe when writers set a book in Scotland and have little idea of the country or the history. I must say this book, Ms. Welfonder's debut novel, surprised me. I really enjoyed it and recommend it to those wanting a good old fashion Scottish romance. And I mean "old fashion" in glowing terms. Ms. Welfonder gives a first class tale and it insures I will keep reading her next efforts.Today's romance market tends to slash the history for the novels in favour of quicker pace. And it leaves you with a contemporary book with a horse and a kilt to let you know it's a Scottish Historical. And this is an insult the readers. (steps off Soap Box and moves on to reviewing...lol). So I hope this "old fashioned" historical is the shape of things to come. Linnet MacDonnell was the youngest of 7 sisters, her mother died giving birth to her, so her father has little love loss for her. Not a proper lady, she was permitted to run wild with her brothers. Instead of managing a keep, she is a good knife thrower or can out riding any man - gasp, astride! Worse, she has the gift of sight, tainting her in daddy dearest eyes. So when Duncan Mackenzie of Kintail offers for her, even though is an ancient enemy, The MacDonnell is more than pleased to be rid of his ugly daughter. Linnet is not thrilled with the prospects. Duncan is known as a fierce warrior, the Black Stag, and more terrifying, it is rumoured her killed his first wife for betraying him with another man. But she has no choice, so the marriage is made. Duncan wants only two things in a wife. The first, that she not be a great beauty like his first wife. He blames her beauty for her betraying him, and bearing a son that might not be Duncan's. He wants a nice dowdy woman men will not look at. Secondly, he wants her power, hoping she will be able to tell him if the boy is really his or not. Outside of that, he wants nothing more from the redheaded hellion he takes as a bride. Only, Linnet is not ready to settle for such meager crumbs and sets about to change Duncan and his heart. It's a warm, loving tale. Ms. Welfonder's voice is already strong, surprising for a first book, so she shows she is a writer to watch. Her love of Scotland is clear in her words. Just one note that shows, Ms. Welfonder is not Scot. It's Mackenzie (little K), but that is me being picky again. So if you love Scottish Historical, do NOT miss this one!!

Rating: Summary: A WONDERFUL, SEXY, STORY! Review: I have been reading excellent reviews on this book for months and couldn't wait to get my hands on it. (For starters, it was an RT 4 1/2 stars, TOP PICK!) I'm happy to report it exceeded my expectations! Duncan & Linnet are worthy opponents...even more worthy lovers. I was swept up and away by this story within the first few pages and hated to see it end. Can't wait to read more from this author!

Rating: Summary: A True Gem! Review: I love a good Scottish romance, and when I found Sue-Ellen Welfonder, I found a new favorite. She researches, and travels to her sites. In fact, sometimes choosing the sites because the story comes to her there. At her website, she said that Duncan came to her while she was visiting Eilean Donan Castle, and "gave" her his story complete! My heartfelt thanks to Duncan MacKenzie and Sue-Ellen Welfonder for telling his tale so very well. Duncan is a the Black Stag, a man without a heart. His first wife, Cassandra, was a truly heartless witch with a capital "B!" She and Duncan's half brother, who could pass for his twin, managed to take his trust, his love, in fact, every good and decent thing in his life and pretty much destroy it. Now, he takes an innocent second wife; one with the second "sight." His sole purpose in doing so is to find out if his son Jamie, is in fact, his son or his half brother's. He doesn't want to really be married to her, he wants her to use her "sight" and then stay out of his way. Unfortunately, at his first sight of her, emotions were stirred that he thought were long dead. Now he fights them, himself, and her, at every step. While Linnet, with a grace, and a beauty she didn't know she had blossoming every day, is winning every heart at her new home, even the Laird's, and especially one small boy, by the name of Jamie! But though Cassandra is dead, her evil is not. And Kenneth, the wicked half brother is still alive. Will he win Linnet's heart, or is she too wise? And what of Marmaduke Strongbow, the scarred, but honorable ENGLISH (?) knight? Will Linnet find the love she has waited all of her life to find, waiting so patiently? Oh, please, do get this book! It is SO VERY worth the read! If you like things Scots, Romantical, historical, well-researched, and written by someone who so obviously loves the same and has a talent to bring a great story to paper - this is one book you DON'T want to miss. I'm just sorry it took me so long to find her.
Rating: Summary: A wonderful story you won't want to miss! Review: I'd read so many wonderful reader reviews of this book that I wasn't sure if it'd be able to live up to my expectations. But it did and more. Wonderful characters with great depth, a true sense of history that places you in the story, and a romance that is hot, hot, hot makes this book a real keeper! Duncan goes right up there with the best of the hunky heroes. I loved him. Highly recommended!
Rating: Summary: A fascinating romance Review: In 1325 Magnus MacDonnell sells his daughter tomboyish Linnet to his enemy Duncan 'Black Stag' Mackenzie over the objections of his sons in order to ease the growing squabbles between the clans. Duncan purchased the lass not to consummate any marriage or deep love from afar, but because he wants her to use her legendary talent to 'see'. He needs to know who sired Robbie? Duncan believes Linnet can tell him the truth as to whether his half-brother or he placed the seed in Duncan's unfaithful but now dead wife. Upon meeting Robbie, Linnet knows that Duncan is the sad lad's father, but hides that information from him. She believes her new spouse has a heart in spite of his reputation and rumors that he murdered his first wife. As she begins to fall in love with him, she reassesses her opinion and wonders if he will ever accept the lad as his own regardless of whom is the father. She also hopes he will learn to love again DEVIL IN A KILT in an entertaining medieval romance that uses the three prime characters to tell a story of the aftermath of infidelity on the innocent. The plot moves a bit slower than usual because Sue-Ellen Welfonder allows the audience to see deep inside Duncan's soul. Throwing a wee bit of foretelling abilities adds depth to a pleasant fourteenth century Scottish romance. Harriet Klausner
Rating: Summary: Enchanting Scottish Historical Review: In her debut novel, Ms. Welfonder has painted a vivid picture of life in an early fourteenth century Scottish castle. Having despaired of ever being as beautiful as her six older sisters, Linnet MacDonnell has resigned herself to an arranged marriage to Duncan MacKenzie, laird of the MacKenzies, also known as the Black Stag for his fierceness in battle. But Linnet knows that Duncan only desires her as his wife for her 'sight' which will enable her to tell Duncan whether Robbie is his son or that of his evil half-brother, Kenneth. Linnet's life at Eilean Creag, Duncan's castle, is much improved from her existence under the roof of her drunken father. Duncan is kind to her, though he has made it clear from the start that he was interested in a marriage in name only and wished only for Linnet to care for Robbie and discover the identity of the boy's father. Duncan's inability to love again after the treachery of his first wife is an obstacle that only Linnet's love can heal if he will but open his heart. Written with much emotion and details into the life in a fourteenth century Scottish castle, DEVIL IN A KILT is a thoroughly enjoyable historical. While the supporting characters add surprising depth to this novel, the love of the heroine proves that love can heal even the most hardened of hearts.
