Rating: Summary: Cute read... Review: but didn't seem to have much more than a drag along plot. I love reading about friendships but I look for books with a little more depth and meaning! I do want to read the others though...
Rating: Summary: What a fun fun book!! Review: Even though I am not a part of that 30-something single crowd (I just got engaged recently) anymore, I can still relate to the trials and tribulations that Tara, Katherine and Finan go through as they struggle with issues of love, life and death. I am a big Marian Keyes fan ~~ I have read just about every one of her books and she keeps writing better and better as time goes along. This is the newest U.S. release and it's wonderfully written ~~ with the English/Irish sass I have come to expect, and deeper characterization of her main characters. Tara finds herself trapped in an unhappy relationship ~~ though she refuses to admit to herself what her friends are seeing ~~ that Thomas is a rat. Thomas criticizes Tara constantly about her weight, bills, and everything she does. The unhappier she gets, the more she eats and dives into her quest for the ultimate lipstick. However, Tara finally sees the light and the revelations she find strikes close to home in this reader's heart. Katherine was jilted in affairs of the heart when she was young. With matching underwear sets and a pristine apartment, Katherine decides she is going to play it safe with her love life ~~ till Finan dares her to chase after the new guy in the office. Relucantly, she agrees and finds to her amazement new joy in a relationship with a man. Marian writes so convincingly of her characters ~~ you, as a reader, feels as if you personally know each one of them. You're rooting for them as they undergo changes in their lives. And it's a small peek ~~ almost as if you're looking into their living room for a short period of time. It's a wonderful and quick read. I wouldn't hesitate anyone to read this book. It is one of my favorites and I am eagerly awaiting other books that she hasn't released in the US yet. This book is also a great vacation read ~~ perfect for the beach or camping trip. It's light enough to keep your mind off of serious problems, and yet hefty enough to keep you busy reading for a few days!
Rating: Summary: If I could give this book MORE than 5 STARS, I would Review: Fabulous, fabulous, fabulous. This must be one of Marian's best books written. I have read a couple of her books (Rachel's Holiday & Watermelon) and I was just blown away by this story. I do love Marian's style of writing, but at first I was a little hesitant about reading this book because it wasn't about the Walsh family... I am so glad I didn't follow through with my thoughts!! This novel gives insight to such an important purpose of everyday living that many people take for granted/ overlook- which is life itself; how we act, what we do with the talents we are given, and how we listen to our family and friends. This novel is a must read. I never thought I could have been so touched by a book.
Rating: Summary: "You'll laugh, you'll cry...." Review: I am a big fan of Marian Keyes and this book is probably one of her best. I could not put it down. While there were some low points in the characters' lives I thought that this made a more realistic story. I think that the characters went through things that everyone of us has gone through at some point or another in life. Excellent book, and not to sound tired and trite but "You'll laugh, you'll cry..."
Rating: Summary: Fantastic book! Review: I enjoy Keyes books and felt that this one and Sushi for Beginners shows her best work. This book deals with some real life serous matters, but allows the reader to relate to the three main characters. A rather quick read, and especially good if you are currently dealing with a difficult situation in your real life.
Rating: Summary: She does it again, and again, and again... Review: I just love reading a Marian Keyes book, and Last Chance Saloon was no exception. I've saved this book on my shelf for a while hoping that if I waited long enough, there would be another book by this talented author to replace it with. Well, it didn't happen and I was in the mood for an uplifting, spirited read, so I picked it up. Ms. Keyes manages to create compelling, loving, genuine and fun characters with every book she writes. She writes about people that I would want for my own best friends. And she writes about people with characteristics and flaws we can all relate to. This particular book is about a group of thirty year old friends living in London. There's Tara, who is in the wrong relationship because she'd rather be in something than alone; Katherine, who would rather be along than get hurt, and Liv, who is perpetually dating a married man who keeps promising to leave his wife. Then, there is Fintan, their gay, fun and eccentric friend who faces a health scare that changes all of their lives. If you've never read a Marian Keyes, don't wait another minute, get them all! If you just haven't read this one yet, it's a must read. I envy anyone who has an unread book by this amazing author. My only complaint is that she doesn't write them fast enough! Although the "chic-lit" genre has gotten a bit overdone, Ms. Keyes is a writer you can count on for keeping it up to par.
Rating: Summary: like it Review: i thought this was a great bok..cant wait to read more of marian keyes novels
Rating: Summary: Very disappointing Review: I've read all of Marian Keyes' books, and I am sorry to say that I first saw a downhill slide with Angels, and it continued with this book. Full of cliches (as another reviewer noted) and the token gay friend, it seemed like a half-hearted effort. I have Sushi for Beginners yet to read but I am a little apprehensive about it-I'll give it a try, but if it's as bad as Last Chance Saloon and Angels, I'm afraid I will have to give up on Keyes, who used to be one of my favorite modern writers.
Rating: Summary: Marian Keyes continues to rock my world! Review: Last Chance Saloon--where a woman stands if she is over 30 and single, at least according to Tara, one of a small group of friends who have known each other since their days in a small town in Ireland. She has spent her adult life jumping from bad boyfriend to bad boyfriend and is presently with a really bad one. Thomas calls her a fat cow, monitors her candy consumption, and is generally nasty to her, "for her own good." Tara's best friend Katherine is in a Last Chance Saloon of her own creation. Seriously devastated by a series of painful relationships, she creates an image of "Ice Queen" to avoid getting too close to love. All of this changes when Fintan, their third best friend, faces catastrophe. Keyes explores thoughts all women have had, from "Is this as good as it gets?" to "How hurt will I get by getting too close?", all with wit and humor. You will not be disappointed by Last Chance Saloon!
Rating: Summary: perfect summer reading Review: Marian Keyes is a wonderful writer who presents truly human but endearing characters in such a way that you instantly relate to them. In turn, you rapidly become sucked into their world, quickly turning pages to see where their lives take them. In Last Chance Saloon we meet three childhood friends who fled Ireland for London: Katherine, the calm, cool and collected ice queen, Tara, a slightly-overweight, slightly neurotic girl with an emotionally-abusing boyfriend, and Fintan, a homosexual man in the fasion industry with a loving boyfriend. This novel traces their lives over the course of a year which changes them forever. When Fintan is diagnosed with leukemia, he issues a challenge to the girls -- that they break their self-destructive patterns and start living. For Katherine this means ditching the ice-queen act and pursuing Joe, Mr. Perfect from the ad agency in which she works. For Tara, this means leaving the nasty Thomas -- and risking being alone. The resultant novel is a unique mix of humor and tragedy; lighthearted reading but with a serious message.
