Rating: Summary: Well Written Review: A well written story of Rodney Hampton a LA publicist and generally a good guy who thought that playing hit and run with women was the way to become a man. Forced to re-think his game when his best friend and running partner falls in love and marry, Rodney goes on a search through his past (or "ghost busting" as one of his true friends call it) to find a mate. With added pressure from his no nonsense sister and ailing mother he thinks that this special person was a women in his past that he overlooked on the rundown. The words flow in the story just as if you were having a conversation with the writer. He weaves in a lot of characters in the quest, not all 133 (thanks goodness) but enough for you to get an idea of the life of a good sometimes bad dog in contemporary LA. He gave us the LA that fellow Angelenos know and love and not the LA you hear about on the evening news. He was not afraid to show the true nature of the male species and that they also have feelings, wants and desires.I enjoyed Nelson George's previous novels and looked forward to reading this one, but after reading some of the first reviews posted on Amazon I had second thoughts, then I had the opportunity to catch him in a live discussion about the book on CSPAN and thought I give it a try, I'm glad I did. This was a very refreshing and well written book, I laughed out loud when Rodney was shining and was sad when he lost or was hurting and smiled with him in the end. I recommend this book to all.
Rating: Summary: Having a Hard Time Finishing Review: After reading E Lynn Harris's synopis on the cover I was looking forward to a very interesting novel. However I find this book quite boring and long.
Rating: Summary: waste of time and money!!!!! Review: Although I finished the book I thought it was so boring and the only reason I finished it was to see if it would get interesting but it didn't.I ended up giving this book to the library because I didnt want it.Some people may like this book and some may not but Im one whose not feelin this book!!!
Rating: Summary: Tick Tock goes Rod-nee's biological clock Review: As the book opens, 30year old Rodney is the best man at his friend Tim wedding. After the wedding, it dawns on him that he wants what Tim has, a wife. He has his own unorthodox way of finding Mrs Right. Unfortunately, he makes this list of 100+ women and narrows it down to 3. Of those three one is the right one. We get to see Rodney get ridiculed and get his feelings hurt a number of times during his quest. He gets some good advice from is clinically depressed mother, and his nieces who seem to see the world better than him. While i enjoyed the book, cause I could relate to some of the things Rodney was going through, I felt there was a little too much emphasis on the job, which could have been replaced with more character development. Especially on the women. And Mrs Right, I knew the moment she appeared that was who it was going to be.
Rating: Summary: DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY Review: I could only read the beginning 8 chapters. The book was just dragging along. No excitement, what so ever.
Rating: Summary: One woman short Review: I found this book almost disturbing. I mean you have a young man being pressured into marriage by his mother and best friend. I feel that's one reason why the divorce rate is so high or and why we have so many unhappy/unhealthy marriages.
Rating: Summary: It was good, but could've been better! Review: I just finished reading this book yesterday and it was quite intriguing. The characters were well put together and so was the story line. Reading this book made me want to make my own list of past guys I've dated. I think Nelson George is a brilliant writer and I can relate alot to some of the female characters in this box. Also, their is a twist at the end of the book with the woman he ends up with. Hope you enjoy it too.
Rating: Summary: One Woman Short Review: I like the story line, it was interesting to see another book written by a brother that has a sensitive side, but that was just it. Another book about men chasing women and then finally realizing that his friends are moving on and therefore they need to get with the program. Rodney Hampton was a typical man trying to get his life together after a monumental event reshapes his best friend's life. I thought it was sad that his friend, Tim, had to get married before Rodney realized that he needed to get his life together and move on. I think it is even worse that he had to revisit old relationships to try and find a mate. He was shallow as were the characters in the book. No one was developed enough so that we could follow and feel for them. The three women on the list had worse problems than Rodney and that was sad! I thought there were some extraneous characters in there that didn't need to be and they didn't enhance the story at all....
Rating: Summary: Pretty Good! Review: I love a good and just ending and that is what I got! Under pressure from many sources our hero decides to search for that 'one woman'. On his quest he picks 3 women out of 133 other lovers that he's had. This leads the hero to examine himself and what he wants. I must say...the 3 women he had to choose from were some of the sorriest sisters! They were all from one extreme to the other creating a disfigured triangle of disfunction. The women all had a story, that gave the reader little understanding of why the main character would want to bother with any of them. Anyway, I think Nelson George is a good writer and appreciate his ability to move from commentary to fiction. 'One Woman' is not a waste of money.
Rating: Summary: Needs work Review: I only finished reading the book because once I start I have to finish. However, this book leaves a lot to be desired. It is really a book about a PR's career, not his love life. If George had made his book about Rodney's career as a publicist then maybe I would like it. The women were triflin' and so were the men. Tim was pitiful. I wouldn't want him as my man. And Bernice and Caron? they were too sad. Like I said Needs work! Maybe next time.
