Summary: It Was Okay....
Review: One Woman Short was an "okay" book. Nothing earth-shattering on either extreme: I didn't love it, and I didn't hate it. Things that I liked: the main character, Rodney, was a pretty nice guy; his sister, Roberta, is funny, sassy, sharp-tongued, and loves her brother dearly; George writes in very vivid descriptive detail (I felt like I was in L.A. myself, and I've never been there before). Things I didn't like: the whole premise of the book (a thirty-something successful black male feeling pressure to get married after his friend's wedding, and hounding from his mother, sister, and nieces? A little farfetched); the method Rodney used to seek out his future bride (a list of 133 old flames - how do you even narrow it down to 3 - and why the 3 losers he picked?); and as another reviewer pointed out, there was too much narration, and not enough dialogue. Overall, it was, like I said, an "okay" book. I think it may have been better if George had developed the characters, and Rodney's relationship to them, more. This was definitely better than Urban Romance. And even though it appears that George's writing style just doesn't appeal to me, since I already have it, I'll read Seduced as well.

Summary: One chapter short!
Review: Please don't misunderstand . . . this book is da bomb! BUY IT! READ IT! ENJOY IT! But, (and there is aways a but . . .) Nelson George leaves us hanging! How? This is a story about a 33-year-old businessman who has an epithay as best man at his best friend's wedding. The experience is so surreal that our hero begins to take stock of his own life and his loves and decides that maybe it's time to settle down and find a wife. He makes a list of the 133 women he has been with and determines that 3 women from his past(for various reasons) are the ones that he should focus on. Pressure is also brought to bear on our hero by his older sister, elderly mother, one of his nieces and a host of others hell bent on getting our hero to the altar as quickly as possible. We get to the end of the book and we know who the last woman is that our hero is with, but the last chapter doesn't get him (or us) to the altar! We presume that the woman he is last with the THE ONE, but we have no gurantee! (Frankly, I liked our hero single. I'm a woman who has been married for nearly 30 years and have a son and a daugter who both my husband and I encourage to see the world and date often and continuously. Who says everyone has to marry? It wasn't one of the Ten Commandment, was it? ) In any event, ONE WOMAN SHORT is a great read just as Nelson George's other novels, SEDUCED (1997) and URBAN ROMANCE (1999) were. Mr. George is an excellent writer. If you enjoyed WAITING IN VAIN by Colin Channer and/or UNTIL by Timmothy B. McCann, you're going to love ONE WOMAN SHORT (even though Mr. George left out the last chapter! . . . or maybe there's a sequel in the works . . . you think? Be still my heart!)

Summary: An L.A. man's view of the dating game.
Review: Rodney displays the fears most of us have, both men and women. He knows what he wants but has for one reason or another been unable to obtain that certain relationship. After attending his best friend's wedding, main character, Rodney begins to contemplate love in his own world. He compiles a list of the 133 women he has had a relationship with, whittles that list down to the all important top 3 and goes on a quest to find each woman and attempt to find out if love is better the second time around. What Rodney does not seem to realize is that there is no second time, just an intermission and a continuation of the first time.

This is an easy read and interesting in that is is a man's view. A good summer read.

Summary: Really a 4+
Review: Rodney Hampton is an arrogant man in his thirties who has decided he should get married after his best friend and former running through women buddy, Tim settles down and gets married. So he compiles a list of all the woman he has dated or bedded and comes up with three who might have been the ONE. Belinda, Sabena, and Amy though very different women all loved him until he was the one who messed things ups. Can he go back and recapture that time? Against objections and ridicule from family and friends think he can waltz back into these women's lives. Meanwhile there are compelling secondary characters and storylines. His mother is ill, fighting depression. He worries about his sister and her poor choices in men and fighting off Tim's wife's matchmaking attempts and his constant roaming eye. As Rodney looks up his old loves, he is faced with the reality that time brings about changes in more ways than one. This novel provides a good insight to the public relations side of the entertainment business as well what it takes to compete with the big boys in Los Angeles. Some descriptive scenery is also provide. I highly recommend this book. The author has been quite busy with his latest release, Show and Tell and his directing and producing projects. I unders this book has been optioned for a movie.

Summary: A Man's View of the Dating Game
Review: Rodney Hampton watched his partner Tim, repeat his vows and wondered why his life wasn't there and did a special lady ever make him want to be there? Rodney compiled a list of the 133 women he had known, narrowed the list to the 3 women who had left the deepest impression and looked each of them up to see if love really was better the second time around. After running into several walls, Rodney realized he was doing this the wrong way and wondered if he were passing something, while looking back? He slows down, stops trying to recapture his past and when he does he learns that someone has him on their list.

George shows us a sensitive male view of the dating game, love, commitment and maturity. You recognize Rodney's fears, you see him grow and you know he's finally becoming a man.

Summary: Lackluster...
Review: The book held my attention, mostly out of curiosity, for the first several chapters...But, let me tell you...I struggled to read the remaining chapters, simply hoping it would get interesting, even a little....that didn't happen.

Summary: Good Story But Could Have Been Written Differently
Review: The premise of One Woman Short is simple: 33-year old Rodney has a best friend who gets married. Rodney begins to reflect on his life and wonder if any of his past lovers could be his future mate. In my opinion, the writer didn't really stick to the main focus of the book; it seemed there was a lot of emphasis on Rodney's career, and inclusion of tons of characters who didn'dt seem to belong in this story.

On one hand I enjoyed reading about Rodney's observations regarding LA, the entertainment industry, and his female love interests. On the other hand, I truly wished there could have been less narrative and more dialogue in this otherwise well written story. The good thing is there are quite a few laugh out loud sentences in this book and you do learn a lot about commercial shoots, etc. Even though this isn't my favorite Nelson George book, I do enjoy his other works and look forward to reading more fiction by him.

Summary: Lacks Spunk
Review: This book lacks a lot of spunk that most African-American novels of today offer. After reading several online reviews of nothing but praise, I was truly disappointed. I accidentally left this book at a hotel on vacation and was not upset about the loss.
