Summary: An Insult to Gone with the Wind
Review: In GWTW I was quite impressed with the interesting story line and excellent character development. Mitchell ends her masterpiece stunningly. The sequel was an insult to Scarlett's self-realization in the final chapters of GWTW. "Scarlett" should not be read by anyone who thoroughly enjoyed the transfomation of Scarlett in GWTW. Ripley creates another Scarlett in her novel who is not on parrellel to Mitchell's original. I was disappointed in the choppy way it was written and the desicions of Scarlett that were not true to her original character personality. If you are not a critical reader in search of perfection you will enjoy the story line and the predictable ending but GWTW fans will surely be disappointed.

Summary: A Very, Very Disappointing Book!!
Review: I'll admit, when I first read this book, I was so happy about the ending, I almost cried. I was so happy for Scarlett. This was in part because I cried for a full hour after finishing GWTW. I was heartbroken. Then I reread Scarlett. The plot was alright, but it was so impractical, I could hardly believe it! The Scarlett I knew from GWTW was not the Scarlett in the sequel. The style of writing can't compare, and neither can the plot. Scarlett was determined in this book, but she never would have done those things, like giving up Tara. I am sorry I read it.

Summary: Wonderfully written; A pleasant read
Review: This is a wonderful sequel and I would recommend it to anyone who read GWTW. If you are a die-hard fan of M. Mitchell - do not read this book. It cannot meet some of the standards you expect a sequel to be. With sequels, things have to change. They cannot remain exactly as they were or it wouldn't be a sequel. Scarlett had to get out of Georgia. She had to grow up. It would be a completely boring novel if she continued to stay at Tara trying to build up the plantation. I think a lot of readers wanted her to stay the same and were disappointed when her actions were different from those in GWTW. I was enchanted by Scarlett's determination to get Rhett. That is the main thing that kept me from putting the book down. It would be wonderful if Ms. Ripley decided to continue the story between Rhett and Scarlett.

Summary: Doesn't Compare To Gwtw!!!
Review: This book should not even try to be compared to Gone With the Wind. It should have been its own book and not a sequel to the best book of all time. This book didn't even follow Gone With the Wind that well. If you liked Gone With the Wind then don't read this book!!!!

Summary: VERY DISAPPOINTING SEQUEL
Review: As I remembered correctly at the end of GWTW, Scarlett had finally come to her senses regarding Ashley and knew she didn't love him. Then in the beginning of Scarlett, she is whining about him again at Melanie's funeral? Scarlett lost her edge. The real Scarlett wouldn't have run off to Ireland. She was a true southerner and wouldn't have left HER roots--the south. i thought this book was very weak to be the sequel to GWTW. Don't even bother with it.

Summary: TWO DAYS I'LL NEVER GET BACK
Review: Being a die-hard fan of Margaret Mitchell's Gone With the Wind, I bought this book in hardback to add to my collection before I have even glimpsed inside the covers. By the time I was halfway through this book, however, I had decided that it's $25 completely wasted. I was surprised that someone would even want to publish this book!!! There isn't one good thing that I can say about this book. The plot was implausible; the historical details murky, and the writing was simply juvenile. In Gone with the Wind, Margaret Mitchell has created some of the most memorable characters to grace the world of American fiction. In "Scarlett", Alexandra Ripley has turned them all into spineless whiners without an inch of depth. The spitfire Scarlett O'hara has turned into a lovesick puppy who's only ambition in life is to get Rhett back under her thumb, and Rhett Butler has lost all the charm and charisma he exhibited in GWTW as America's most beloved scoundrel. And the part where Scarlett becomes an alcoholic and eventuall returned to her roots among her working class Irish relatives was simply laughable. How did Alexandra Ripley even come up with such absurd ideas? Would the Scarlett really do that? Did Alexandra Ripley even read GWTW? These are only some of the questions that went through my head as I was flipping through this poor excuse of a novel. I am usually not an advocate of book burning, but if there is one book that deserves to be added to the torch pile, it is this one. Please....To spare yourself the frustration and the ranting and ravings that will naturally accompany the reading of this book, DO NOT READ IT!!! DO NOT READ IT!!! DO NOT READ IT!!!

Summary: Wonderful, but I want another book!
Review: This book is just flattering. But, I really would like to know what happens next, have a permanent ending. That's what I was hoping for in this book, but I didn't get it.

Summary: AS GOOD AS A SEQUEL CAN BE!!!
Review: Although it can't compare with GWTW(what can?) I liked Scarlett. I think Alexandrea Ripley created Scarlett as the person she always wanted to be, like Ellen and I thought that was nice. I think that it was a good book and I enjoyed it throughly.

Summary: A pleasing and generally well written sequel.
Review: This sequel to Gone with the Wind was suprisingly well written and I felt that the author Alexandra Ripley kept to Margaret Mitchell's style very well. Her own style did become clearer towards the end but I didn't really feel it fit into the story very well. The book had a very clever plot and I thought taking Scarlett back to Ireland was a lovely idea. Unfortunately, I thought the ending was a bit weak and it felt a bit rushed to me. Scarlett's final reunion with Rhett was a bit unconvincing for me but her constant meetings with him throughout the book were quite enjoyable - and emotional! There were several points in this sequel that I found very similar to the original. The part were Scarlett returns to Tara for the first time and throughout her journey there she keeps on thinking about her Mammy and wanting her to hold her etc. That is just like the part in the original where she is bringing Melly back from the war and wants her mother but when she arrives she is dead. Mammy is practically dead when she arrives in the sequel. A few points like that throughout the story made it lose some of it's appeal. Overall the book was enjoyable, moving and I would recommend it to Gone with the Wind fans, even if it is just to see someone elses interpretation of what happens to Scarlett.

Summary: Stands on its own!
Review: Mrs. Ripley's work should stand on its own, not to be compared too closely with Ms. Mitchell's work. All southern women writers are compared to Margret Mitchell in some degree though. You must take this book and read it for a novel of love between two older people with a rich history. If you choose to believe it is "Your" characters, then you will be dissapointed. Ms. Ripley could not write with the same innocence, honor and grace that GWTW was written. She could not because she wrote it in the 1990's, not in the 1920's. This is not GWTW 2, its a good book by itself.
