Rating: Summary: Keep 'em coming Mr. Martin! Review: After having my girlfriend continuously remind (harass) me, I was pleasantly surprised to finally read Mr. Martin's debut novel. The story is a very comical and well-written tale of a contemporary black man's adjustment to post college life. The character of Tony Harris, as well as his eclectic assembly of friends, represents a lot of "bruthas" I know. If a reader is looking for a story that paints a poignant picture from an often "underrepresented" point of view, then I strongly recommend Dazed & Confused-Surviving Life in the Game. Be warned, the language is not for the weak at heart. However, the story is definitely one of a kind. ..." Maybe it's high time for bruthas to start forming our own BOOKCLUBS so if nothing else, we can stand behind those authors who are brave enough to tell our stories with passion and HONESTY! ... Marvelous job my brutha!
Rating: Summary: Chef Wayne's review Review: After reading the first few chapters of Dazed & Confused, I found myself looking forward to the next chapter. I went from reading when I got off work, to taking the book with me so I could read in between what ever it was I was cooking. A few times I just did catch my food from being at the point of no return. Most men can relate to what Troy writes in his book, be it from a college stand point or in my case, a military stand point. the book is so interesting that you sometimes want to jump ahead to find out what happened without reading up to that point. This was a change from the normal reading I do. But it was a welcome change. I truly enjoyed this book and I feel anyone who reads it will enjoy it also. Troy, Two thumbs up my man. Keep up the outstanding work.
Rating: Summary: Best fiction book I've read in a WHILE! Review: As a native Houstonian, I can REALLY relate to this book! The characters are all involved in realistic situations, some of which I have even found myself in :-). And the atmosphere is of a young man encapsulated in romance, spirituality, and business. I was confused to read the negative feedback posted here by LLC... the detail placed on areas such as clothing and romantic conquest, sybolize the character's youth... The story was about an aspiring YOUNG man, and as such, these references are very valid, and I must say they tie into the story very well. I can honestly say that I've learned a thing or two from the main character's relationship with Monica, primarily the things he did to keep from getting "played". Overall, I think this was an excellent story, and I'm about to read it for the third time! I definitely look forward to reading future publications by Martin.
Rating: Summary: Dazed and Confused After Reading This Drivel Review: First of all let me say that I usually do not write reviews... At times I felt like I was reading a fashion magazine. The author went into great detail about clothes. He should have spent more time on character development. Don't get me started on the main characters constant references to his fraternity. There was very minimal character development in this book. The author did not make me "feel" Tony or his girlfriend Monica. I did not care what happened to them. This book is full of stereotypes. I could not believe that a black author would categorize his race like that. Tony was full of ... I never want to read anything from this man again. Some ... claim that the author is telling it like it is. I prefer to think that African Americans value something other than expensive clothing and light skin, but maybe I'm wrong.
Rating: Summary: Real life sh-- Review: I enjoyed reading the book .As I read I could relate to lots of things he talked about . However I really liked the book and I am looking forward to reading the next book. Rating: Summary: Right on the Money!! Review: I just wanted to say that I just finished reading Dazed and Confused: Surviving Life in the Game. I thourghly enjoyed the book. I started reading the book on wednesday and I finished it on friday. I am a college student so I was able to identify with what he was talking about. I thought the book was EXCELLENT!!! I've already recommended it to everyone that I come in contact with. During the last few chapters I had to have a kleenex close by. I couldn't hold back the tears from all that was unfolding! I haven't read a book this good in a very long time. I'm from Houston so it was like I could picture the whole story right before my eyes. I was able to relate to the different places and restaurants he discussed. The book was great!!! I must admit though I had a hard time locating it in the city of Houston. I was on a journey to get it a particular day at a bookstore that I had called the day before to make sure they had it in stock because I was coming from a long way. I get to this bookstore the very next day and they sold it the same day I called. Needless to say I was very disappointed! I had come all that way to get the book and it was gone. On my way back home I called another book store that I remembered and they happened to have it. I had them hold me a copy and I quickly detoured to the bookstore to buy the book. I was so happy! I didn't want to have to order it because I wanted it NOW! It is a great book! You won't be disappointed!
Rating: Summary: GOOD READING Review: I thought Mr. Martin's book was written quite well. Even though I don't really have time to read I read this one in a couple of days. It is always good to see young black males doing something positive in this days society. For a first timer this book was good b/c I was able to relate to a lot of the scenes where he described. I think the author tried to give you a perfect picture and put you there with the characters, and for the person who did not like the detailed description, you would have had to been around during the early 90's to put yourself in his shoes, I mean he was trying to put you in the same setting. And second, the young lady with the magnifying class on the spelling misshaps. I have seen even bigger authors who have more than one book (I mean big name authors) who have spelling and grammatical errors. Come on people let's support each not bash one another please. But keepem coming Mr. Martin. You will again have my support. Keep your head up!!!!
Rating: Summary: Excellent ! Review: This book gives an excellent account of a young african american's journey into the halls of corporate america! I enjoyed every page in the book! I look forward to more publications from this author! Keep up the good work FRAT!
Rating: Summary: EXCELLENT BOOK!!! Review: This book is EXCELLENT!!! Reading this book took me back to the days when I was in college.(Thanks Troy for putting Lamar University in your book.) I enjoyed the book because Martin allowed readers to really see the changes "Tony" made during his transition from college to the "real world". Anyone who has gone to college can relate to the main character and the decisions made to set a foundation for their life as a full-fledged adult. Another reason I enjoyed the book was the setting. Being able to recognize the places "Tony" visited will also draw readers into the story allowing them to visualize the events as seen through the eyes of the author. Troy Martin is a very talented author and I am looking forward to reading future books because I KNOW they will be great. W.H.S. c/o '92
