Rating: Summary: Stunningly Beautiful Review: I grew up watching the space program unfold and saw the pictures in Life, Look, and the National Geographic. The photographs from space have always fascinated me, but this book is something more. The quality of the photographs and the printing is beyond anything I remember seeing growing up. My favorite, and maybe it is an illusion, is the photograph of an astronaut working on the moon with a little blue haze around him as if there were a little atmosphere surrounding him. Even if it isn't real moisture being vented it certainly is a wonderful metaphor for the little ocean of life the space suit is in that otherwise desolate place. I love sitting with this book every now and again and revisiting these great photos.
Rating: Summary: A voyage to the Moon Review: An amazing collection of photographs of one of the most barren landscapes ever to be see by human eyes. This book takes those of us never likely to travel in space on a voyage to the moon.
Rating: Summary: Outstanding clear images Review: All photographs are treated with great care by the author. Just one single image, taken by Gene Cernan, of Apollo 17, showing the small lunar module in the distance, among the Moon mountains, worths by itself the price of the book. I am eagerly waiting for the Volume II !
Rating: Summary: A little too much gray Review: While the photos are crytal clear and show the "magnificent desolation" of the moon, well, that's just it. There are just so many shots of the surface that can be shown before it becomes redundant. I guess I was hoping to see a little more of the space craft and other hardware, of which there is very little. My suggestion for all of those Apollo/Saturn fans out there, leaf through a copy before you buy. I'd still recommend it, but my expectations were not met.
Rating: Summary: WE NEED TO GO BACK! Review: A beautiful and artful collection of some very amazing photographs from the Apollo missions. I was amazed by a lot of them...and before I closed the book, I felt the urge to call my Senator and demand our return to the moon.
Rating: Summary: Picture Perfect Review: Beautiful! There are no other words to describe this fantastic book. The clarity of the pictures is outstanding and actually put you in the scene. After spending the past thirty years looking at pictures of the Moon and Apollo missions thinking that the cameras they used weren't as good as today, I've had my mind completely changed. It doesn't matter whether you are a space nut or not, you must get this book and place it on your coffee table. Friends of mine continually comment on the images and I may have to buy another to put away for any future generations. People of any type will be amazed at this simple yet striking book.
Rating: Summary: Next best to being there Review: The stunning images in this book serve as a visual chronicle and celebration of one of mankind's greatest achievements. While only a few will walk on the moon's surface, or see the glowing blue marble of earth from 200,000 miles away, these pictures make for an artifact that comes as close as anything can of capturing the grandeur and mystery of the lunar surface. Many of the photos are so detailed and incredible that they can be classified in many categories: as science, as history, as art. In any case, we're so fortunate to live in a time when we are able to see close up - in glorious detail - our celestial neighbor. And it turns out to be a rugged, rough and starkly beautiful object that is even beyond the past imaginings of philosophers, pioneers, poets and peasants. Full Moon isn't just a book. It's a heavenly experience.
Rating: Summary: Breathtaking collection of moon/Project Apollo photos Review: This is a gorgeous collection of photographs celebrating the Apollo missions to the moon. The photos are huge, rendered in beautiful detail, and are marvelously selected to provide almost the experience of going and being there. Some almost cheat a little bit: larger and larger photos of the moon to indicate the trip there, and likewise with the earth on the trip back. The photos from the moonwalks are wonderful, though, and frequently ones I've never seen before (which is saying something). You can see each footprint and rover track. This is a book I'll be perusing again and again.
Rating: Summary: A Breathtaking Journey, Godspeed Astroreader! Review: The Apollo 11 moon landing captured the imagination of millions of kids around the world that have dreamed, since then, with a trip to the moon. Now we can all go to our magnificent satellite with this book. With an impressive array of beautiful photographs, both in black and white and in color, Full Moon, allows us to follow the path of the Apollo astronauts, explore the moon's "seas", walk on its surface and see its craters and mountains in vivid detail. The short essays by Andrew Chaikin (The Farthest Place) and Michael Light (The Skin of the Moon) are a well written force on their own. The Notes on the Photographs, precise and informative. But what gives this book its magic, are the images themselves. From cover to cover, from lift-off to moon landing, it is actually like being there, remaking the whole adventure. A Breathtaking Journey! Godspeed!
Rating: Summary: Full Moon is breathtaking! Review: The missions of the Apollo astronauts to the Moon & back yielded 32,000 extraordinarily beautiful photos, the record of a unique human adventure. Each page conveys the excitement, disorientation & awe that the astronauts felt as they were shot into space, explored an alien landscape & looked back home from space. If you've ever wanted to see what space flight was like this is the book. If you've ever wanted to get close to the surface of our nearest celestial body, this is it. A large, awe-inspiring volume with some fine, explanatory writing.
