Rating: Summary: I loved it!!!! Review: I am an elephant person, and I am a voracious reader. While the writing is not terribly sophisticated, the story is beautiful. I bought this book on a whim and it is perhaps one of my favorites of all time. I could not put it down and cried at the end for two reasons - one of which being the book was finished. It lifted my spirits and made me feel the world is a better place. I have decided to believe the story as true. Whether or not it is, it is a triumph of the spirit - go Modoc!!!
Rating: Summary: One of the greatest stories I've ever read. Review: It was a lazy Saturday afternoon and my wife was lying on the bed reading Lord Of The Rings: Two Towers. Reading sounded like a good idea, so I moseyed by my bookcase and took a look around. There was this little book that I purchased about a year ago and never read: MODOC. This sounded interesting, so I decided to give it a try. Please note that I was not prepared to step through the door that MODOC brought me through! I was, and still am, mesmerized. I could NOT put this book down, period. Folks, this book will take you on a journey like no other (and it's all true). MODOC is one of the greatest characters you will ever have the pleasure to read about. There is high adventure, love and gut-wrenching sadness. Simply stated: I shall not forget this book. After reading the story I was changed in a way that's hard to describe. The story has been emblazoned in my mind. I've always loved elephants, and this book gives me an even greater appreciation for them. I can't understand why throughout history, man has enslaved ..., beaten and tortured these beautiful animals that have proven time and again to be faithful companions, hard workers and loving friends. Elephants have always asked for little and provided much. MODOC is now my favorite heroine of all time. BUY THIS BOOK AND READ IT AS SOON AS YOU CAN! You truly do not know what you are missing. Modoc is one of the greatest stories ever put to print.
Rating: Summary: Great story, lousy writing Review: While this book does have a fascinating and heart-rending story, the writing was so bad I could hardly wade through it. The author should have made up his mind if he wanted to write a nonfiction bio of the protagonist and his elephant or a novelization of their story. I don't appreciate "true stories" being full of detail that the teller OBVIOUSLY could not have witnessed or heard verbatim from one of his sources (like the sex scenes between Bram and his South Asian girlfriend...?). The author should have stuck to the facts and left out the sappy stuff and made-up dialogue; the story of this remarkable elephant and her handler is strong enough to stand on its own.
Rating: Summary: Wow Review: This book is so amazing. I can't believe the ties between an elephant and man are so close, that the man does anything to keep his friendship. It is a book that will certainly move you, and show that animals can be more than just animals, but your true friends. The adventures they go to, to stay together are amazing. I highly recommend anyone to read it. Its great.
Rating: Summary: Too much poetic license, not enough facts Review: An over-romaniticized tale, lacking in basic facts. I've read many accounts of American circus history, and the author has obviously taken liberties with his story, while omitting details of dates and location. One example: a photograph lacking a caption or source data would link Modoc with the great circus fire of Hartford, Conn., yet Hartford is never mentioned in the account of the fire depicted in the book, and the actions attributed to Modoc and Bram are incongruous considering the facts of the fire. (See "The Circus Fire" by Stewart O'Nan) This book is an obvious attempt by Hefler to promote "affection training," and while this is perhaps a worthwhile cause, his method defrauds the American circus of its history.
Rating: Summary: One of the greatest animal stories ever Review: I just finished "Modoc" which is unquestionably one of the most touching and gripping animal stories I have ever read. I would have liked to have known what happened with her and Bram for the years that they were separated, it was difficult to get an idea of how much time was really going by. The book has earned its place on my bookshelf, I know I'll be buying copies as gifts rather than letting my own leave. Recommended for animal lovers everywhere.
Rating: Summary: A little sappy, but a wondeful story Review: Allright, so the plot of this book was very predictable at times. There were parts that were dropping in sappiness. However, overall this book was a wondeful read that left you with a warm feeling inside.
Rating: Summary: ladies and Gentlemen..Children of all ages Review: This is a beautiful story of the bond between human and anials. This is a book that you cant put down once started due to the wondering of what could possible be next for the pair. You wont be disappointed!
Rating: Summary: If this story doesn't change your life, you have no heart... Review: This is truly one of the most amazing, heartwarming (and breaking!) stories ever told. It really ought to be required reading, if for no other reason than to force everyone to accept the reality that we humans share a deep and lasting bond with other creatures on this planet; or at least, we can. Or should.
Rating: Summary: Everything a book should be! Review: This is truly one of the best stories I have ever read! This book has love, war, exotic locations, adventure on land, in the jungle, at sea, and a friendship beyond compare. I couldnt help but read this book as fast as I could, but at the same time I dreaded finishing it. I wanted it to go on and on. I have given this book to several friends who find it remarkable. And those that love elephants, put Modoc at the top of their lists.
