Summary: Give Me A Break
Review: This truly is an amazing story, but I find it interesting that it was published without any attribution, without any index, and with a photo section consisting of generic photos of elephants. Did an elephant named Modoc exist? I am certain she did. Did a trainer named Bram spend his life caring for her? I am certain he did. Did their story include stowing away in ships, getting involved in shipwrecks, being shot at during revolutions, circus fires, etc? That is where my credulity starts to strain its buttons. The author admits poetic license, but was it limited to the reportage of past conversations in novelistic terms, or did it involve making up adventures that might be strained in a Disney cartoon? This book provides us with no documentation and no way of discerning fact from fiction. Given the choice, and the exercise of my own common sense, I believe very little of it -- and that's a shame, since I opened the book prepared to believe everything.

Summary: Best show & Elephant on earth - Best book on earth
Review: "Modoc is a love story, a gut wrenching saturday afternoon kind of love story that should not be attempted without a full box if tissues within easy reach."- Detroit free press This quote is on the front cover of Modoc and is definetly true. Modoc is the best yet saddest book i have ever read. i have read a lot of books and Modoc is the only one in which i have actually cried in. This book doesn't even have to be for animal lovers to like. Modoc shows how close animals and people really are and how smart animals really can be. Modoc is a story of a boy named Bram and his elephant Modoc and the journeys he and the boy have together. some sad, some exciting, and some just plain fun. i reccomend this book to anybody of any age i am only 11 years old and still truly enjoyed this book. It is truly the best book i have ever read.

Summary: Incredible story that must be shared with the world!
Review: Modoc was given to me to read and has left a permanent mark on my heart! I had the pleasure of meeting Ralph Helfer at a recent Gathering and was touched even more. You will never look again upon another elephant the same way and will always be brought back to thoughts of Modoc! I think Oprah should read it.

Summary: a truly inspiring book
Review: When I saw the cover of this book it immediately grabbed my attention. I am a big fan of elephants and was interested to know what the book was about. After I read the back I bought the book and began to read it right as I got home. I found it heart-warming to read the story of Bram's and Modoc's adventures together as they sought to find happiness. I couldn't hold back my tears many times through out it and thought that it was a great book (and it was worth getting a night behind in my homework to read it!) I think that all animal lovers will appreciate this story and I hope that the get the joy from it that I did.

Summary: Tear jerker to the highest deegree!!
Review: I would very much like to thank you mr Hefler for waiting as long as you did. So that I and others like me could read your book! I went to the libray to get another book, got Modoc instead, and never looked back! Read this book if you never do again.

Summary: A stark tale of pure and simple love...
Review: Modoc is a story about the best thing on earth: Love. This is such a compassionate tale of the true bond between a man and his elephant. Or rather, an elephant and his man. Prepare yourself to cry and cry. Modoc will not leave your hands until the last page is turned, and until the gate of tears breaks loose. Even the unemotional will surely feel their eyes filling.

Summary: The most beautiful love story I have ever read.
Review: Modoc is the most beautiful love story I have ever read. I absolutely could not put this book down. Every page was written in the most beautiful English prose. While I am not finished with this book, I know that I will want to read more even after I have turned the final page. You absolutely MUST READ this book.

Summary: the type of love that is life blood....giving
Review: ........I have read Modoc at least three times. It never ceases to amaze me; the depth of love between Bram and Mo is astounding. No matter what is poetic.......Bram and Mo are real and so was their respect and dependance upon each other. That is undeniable. That is worth the read......

Summary: Modoc and Bram are Homeric heroes for our age
Review: Much hype is written these days about the heroics displayed by professional athletes. But their 'heroics' pale in contrast to the lives of these two great beings. This is a tale about love, faith, courage, betrayal, fate, and so much else. It is a story that has more heart than anything I've read in a very long time. How much I wish I could have met Mosie and Bram in their last years. They have crossed over now and most likely God has granted them eternal bliss. In these cynical times it is necessary to remind ourselves that Love is still very much a part of what it means to be alive. "Modoc" does just that. I shall look upon elephants with far greater compassion having read this book. Please read it.

Summary: Read it, believe it, love it, and cry.
Review: I love this book. I had to try not to cry on it. It is so beautifully writtin, and it's so sad, especially when Bram and Modoc are in the water and Bram stays so he can be with Modoc. I really love this story. Once I had it in my hands, it wasn't out of there till the end. The end is so sad too! With Curpo waving on the benches! Oh, so sad. I'm sending it to all my friends so they can read it. Three cheers: Modoc is no story for people who can't understand love.
