Summary: Meg...BIG AND BAD
Review: ...yup, read this before you go to the beach...
A very informative read about nature's most dangerous predator of the sea. Includes evidence of the Meg still existing today out there, lots of photos, a comparison between other notorious extinct predators, and tons of gripping facts.

Summary: REFRESHING...
Review: After making a habit of reading textbooks, scientific papers, and technical volumes on dinosaurs and other fossils, there was something uniquely refreshing about flipping open Mark Renz's new book MEGALODON: Hunting the Hunter. Perhaps it was the slew of photos (and I mean slew), or maybe it was Renz's unique and colorful writing style. Regardless, this book was a welcome break from the technical blues, but, almost unbeknownst to me. I came away having learned a few things, too!

Mark Renz made his literary debut in 1999 with the publication of FOSSILING IN FLORIDA. Now, fast on the heels of his first successful book, Renz has returned to the literary arena with a fresh volume concentrating on only one of the many types of fossils that can be found in the Land of Disney.

Luckily for the reader, Renz has chosen to concentrate on perhaps the most stupendous and awe-inspiring fossil frequently found by collectors: the teeth of the huge shark Carcharodon megalodon (or Carcharocles megalodon to some). Living from the Oligocene Epoch to the more recent Pliocene Epoch, C. megalodon experimented with some of the largest tooth sizes ever seen in a vertebrate. Some of the more complete specimens regularly reach sizes larger than an adult hand

Included in this volume is a variety of information, including tidbits on the early evolution and later extinction of C. megalodon, a comparison of C. megalodon to other large vertebrates of geological history, and an easy-to-use index of over 50 sites worldwide where one can search for the teeth of this monster. Over 350 photos, a glossary, a bibliography, and a listing of fossil clubs across the United States makes this book even more impressive.

MEGALODON: Hunting the Hunter is not a book specially aimed at doctored paleontologists or paleontology students, although these groups might very well (and probably will) enjoy this book. Instead, Mark Renz has designed his latest work for the fossil collector and the fossil enthusiast. It is easy to catch Renz's passion by simply reading his book, and the vivid photographs add an element that even the most seasoned writing cannot convey. The writings of Mark Renz continue to impress me, and I might even go out on a limb and claim that MEGALODON is even better than his first book.

Summary: MEGA Praise for this Megalodon Book
Review: Having successfully used Mark Renz's first book- Fossiling in Florida- as a guide to finding some awesome fossils buried within Florida's abundant rivers, I decided to give his second book a try. Megalodon: Hunting the Hunter exceeded my expectations. Renz's imaginative writing style brings to life a creature that became extinct millions of years ago. This reader-friendly account, which cuts through all the academic jargon without sacrificing scientific detail, chronicles the emergence and disappearance of this giant species of shark. As an added bonus, the reader is introduced to Megalodon's relatives and other ancient sharks. Full of interesting facts and color photos, this book will appeal to fossil enthusiasts of all ages and levels of expertise. There are over 390 illustrations and photos (including Meg's dentition) -- a gold mine for fossil hunters who need help identifying their finds. Renz also lists at least 50 sites around the world open to intrepid fossil hunters. A reference section lists fossil clubs, related websites, and museums. Young readers should especially enjoy the chapter comparing Meg's ferocity with other prehistoric beasts, like Tyrannosaurus rex.

Megalodon: Hunting the Hunter comes highly recommended by renowned paleontologists and "Meg" experts. Believe me, this is one book that won't sit on your shelf collecting dust!

Summary: "poorest book in paleo history!!!!!!!!"
Review: I have had the opportunity to hunt with Mark on several occasions in Florida and found him to be a wealth of knowlege regarding fossils. He has taken the time to put much of this knowlege into the framework of an educational and enlightening text. The book "Megladon" brings his casual, conversational approach to fascinating levels for interested readers. As a graduate from the University of Rhode Island's Graduate School of Oceanography, I found this book to be delightful to read, informative in it's scope, and very thorough in it's coverage of this large predator. The photographic documentation was awesome, and the additional information regarding various other fossil forms was an added bonus. This book is a "must" for the serious collector. I enjoyed "Fossiling in Florida" very much, but "Megladon" tops my list!

Summary: A Must Have Book For A True Fossil Skark Lover!!!!
Review: I recently had the pleasure of getting a copy of the book Megalodon - Hunting the Hunter by Mark Renz. My first thought was,"Oh yeah, this is going to be yet another amateur fossil hunter book of which all are the same, but each having just a different cover". That's what I was thinking before I opened the book. Man was I wrong to have thought that to any degree!!! This book is certainly not like any of the others which I have received. It is very informative about scientific views of the Giant Extinct Shark Megalodon and includes, as well, unexplained stories of possible encouters with modern day Megs or Meg-like sharks around the world (Though I do not believe they still exist today, the stories are still very exciting to read). The book is full of beautiful color photographs of megalodon teeth plus other shark teeth and fossils from all over the world. It also includes fantastic artwork of sharks by very artistic shark enthusiast and professionals alike. Also Mark Renz went to great pains to include a list of worldwide localities where you may be able to visit and collect your very own Megalodon Teeth. I have never before seen a book as such as this that has ever covered so much information about Megalodon until now. Mark Renz has proven himself to be an excellent writer that is very excited about what he does best; Hunting the Megalodon. His whit and very sincere appreciation of fossils is evident throughout his book. The book is saturated in excitement for fossil collecting!!! It is that sense of Mark's Personal excitement for the hobby that exudes from his style if writing that helps to set the reader on fire for more and more until they finally just have to get up and go fossil hunting for themselves or absolutely risk passing out from visual fossil information overload. At least that is how it affected me. Yes, if you love fossil hunting and especially anything to do with the giant extinct shark Megalodon, then you are going to love Mark's new book "Megalodon - Hunting the Hunter". But be warned, when you pick it up you won't want to put it down and when you do you will be out the door to go fossil hunting for yourself. So read it early in the day before it gets too late in order to leave you plenty of time later to find that big tooth before it gets too dark again outside. But of course, just bring your flash light and Mark's book along with you and that is all you will need to give you that edge to keep going to find that BIG SHARK TOOTH waiting out there for you!!!! Thanks Mark for a GREAT BOOK!!!

Review: If you are into Meg teeth you will be into this book. With hundreds of quality photographs and easy to understand information this book has it all. I have purchased many books on the subject in the past, but this one has them all beat. Thanks to Mark Renz I can now easily identify all of my finds. A must read for anyone who hunts or collects fossils.

Summary: Megaladon: Hunting the Hunter, Outstanding Reference Book!
Review: Mark Renz has written an outstanding reference book,"Megaladon: Hunting the Hunter" by capturing the essence of a monster beast, a denizen of the deep, the mighty Megaladon shark! As an amateur fossil hunter, the quest to find large shark's teeth is always there and always elusive, albeit I did find a three inch megaladon tooth in a cement quarry in Harleyville, South Carolina just a few days ago. "Megaladon: Hunting the Hunter" reinforces that "quest" of trying to understand just what this huge shark was all about. His well written book is chalked with beautiful illustrations that reinforce the easy to read text. In fact, Mark's writing style is quite humerous as he captures your imagination always wondering what might have led to the demise of this huge creature, or better yet, could this creature still be lurking in the depths of our present day oceans? More importantly I believe, the author maintains a creditable scientific explanation of previous extinct shark species which led to the evolution of Megaladon. In fact, I pulled out my shark's teeth collection and compared them to the outstanding illustrations. In sum, I strongly recommend this great book to all amateur and even professional enthusiasts. This well written, wonderfully illustrated book is a must for expanding one's library.
