Rating: 5 stars
Summary: A brilliant beginning to a brilliant series
Review: The book is well-written, showing the reader each of the steps the children take before finding the grail and detailing what was happening all the time. The mystery of their Great-Uncle Merry adds to the reading experience as well.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: The beginning to a great sequence!
Review: Don't be discouraged by the slow start of this book-keep reading! Over Sea, Under Stone is the first book in the Dark Is Rising sequence. Once you are past the first few chapters, you will become intrigued by the characters, and Susan Cooper's ability to mix historical events with fantasy-type situations. If you read this great book, you've got to read the others-so get started!

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: A Very good book!
Review: This was one of my favorite books, even though the first couple of chapters were pretty boring.

In this book, Simon, Jane, and Barney go to visit their mysterious Great-Uncle Merry. They learn about an everlasting war between good and evil and find a map leading straight to what both sides have been looking for for centuries.

Read this book if you like fun and excitement.

Summary: Subtly profound
Review: This well-titled adventure is actually my favorite book of what would develop into "The Dark is Rising" sequence. I like it because supernatural battles between dark and light forces are never overtly dealt with, but they are there; simmering quietly beneath an exciting tale, barely hinted at... wonderfully subtle. This could merely be a story about some kids who search for an ancient grail while greedy people seek to take it from them... or, it could be a profound battle between world-wide mythical good and evil. The reader may decide.

Summary: A master piece through the ages
Review: This book and the others in the series are some of the greatest stories I've ever read. A magickal source of inspiration as well as wonderful entertainment, once you pick it up you can't put it down until its finished.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Great prelude to a masterful series
Review: This was my second favorite book of the Dark is Rising Sequence, though some separate it from that sequence and identify it as a prelude. However you read it, as the lead to a great series, as the prelude to it or as a stand-alone book, it is a great book. Three kids caught up in bigger things is great fodder for a book aimed at kids or adults - Cooper has the skill to make it a great, well-written text enjoyable by people of all ages. Truly a masterpiece.

Rating: 3 stars
Summary: Worth reading for background
Review: The weakest link in an essential, masterly series. Reading this after The Dark is Rising, or even after Greenwitch, is probably a good idea.

Rating: 3 stars
Summary: An adequate beginning to a brilliant series.
Review: When I first read "Over Sea Under Stone" I was disappointed, and only went on to read the rest of Cooper's "Dark Is Rising" series because I didn't have much else to read. Was I ever glad I did! This first book of the series is barely adequate, but the rest of the series is brilliant. I suggest you read "The Dark is Rising" (the second book) first, and then your passion will be enough to carry you through this book. The first two books have almost entirely different sets of characters, who only meet up in the third ("Greenwitch"), so don't worry about reading the second first....The series, however, is a MUST.

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: The book is good, but not the best of Cooper's other books.
Review: This book is the second must for The Dark is Rising sequence, only because it explains who the Drew trio are and who Great-Uncle Merry is. Otherwise the book is boring and does not have the action of her other thrilling books. Cooper follows my same pattern of writing. She has to warm up her writing skills and then she gets really good with her books. I don't want to discourage anyone from reading the book, though.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: The best book ever!!
Review: I've read many Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Adventure books from C.S. Lewis and Tolkein to H.G. Wells, and I'd have to say that Susan Cooper is just as good - maybe better! Over Sea, Under Stone is the story of Simon, Jane, and Barney Drew and their search for the Holy Grail. The children are thrown into a peril between good and evil and learn the amazing secrets of King Arthur, Merlin, and the Holy Grail. Remember: Nothing's quite what it seems....
