Rating: Summary: Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry by Brook Review: In this book Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry it will put you in the shoes of an African American, who lived during the 1930's, when segrigation was supreme. This book desrves a five star rating because of how realistic it seems, it just sucks you in and turns you into the main character and shows you there problems and how they were solved. This book also shows you what it was like to be an African American in the south in the 1930's, it also shows the hardship of what they went thru, like how they got treated not listen to and walked on ! Since they had different skin color. When the KKK (Klu Klux Klan) comes the, most of the blacks life are threatened (by not treating blacks right). So you can see why this book deservse a five star rating for how realistic it is and seems, so that's why I gave it five stars.

Rating: Summary: describes a part of southern history Review: Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, by Mildred D. Taylor, describes the hardships of a black southern family in the early 1930's. In the 1930's, black people were not treated fairly by white people. It was hard for a black family to own land, and owning land meant having freedom. Instead, black families would live on the land of white people. They would work for the white people on the white people's land. The Logan family was fortunate. They owned land so they didn't have to work on a plantation. However, the Logans were treated with the same injustice as the other black families. Mrs. Logan loses her job as a schoolteacher and the Logan family is almost forced to sell their land. I would recommend this book because is shows how black families in the south were underprivileged and provides inside about how this minority had to fight to earn equal rights and respect. It also portrays a contemporary black family of this time period. Be aware that this book clearly describes the hatred and contempt that was a part of this history.
Rating: Summary: There is Value In You Review: Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry written by Mildred D. Taylor is an excellent book for the young adult reader. This novel deals with many universal human concerns that may surface in a young adults life. The question of a childs self-worth is dealt with throughout the novel. Cassie, the young protagonist is faced with this question many times over.Because this novel takes place in the 1930's and she is black there are very few outside sources that can help to stenghten her. Cassie finds strength within herself and refuses to let anyone belittle her.Even in a time when black people were not considered equal to white people she knew she deserved the same treatment and respect that they recieved. Cassie is faced with taking hand me down book from the white kids. The books are beat up and abused with the word "very poor nigra" stamped on the inside cover.Cassie refuses to take her book from the teacher. Cassie feels if the white kids have new books than so should she, when the white kids are finished with the books they give them to the black kids, and that is not fair. Upon going into town with her grandmother Cassie is faced with another incident when a store clerk ignores her and her brother because white people want to be served. Cassie waits patiently for a while and than realizes what is going on . When she realizes the injustice that is occuring she speaks up for herself. The store clerk is shocked calling her out of her name demanding that she leave his store. Cassie proceeds to let him know that they had been standing there for a long time and need service like everyone else, she says he has no right to keep them waiting. Cassie is faced with her nemisis Lillian Jean. Cassie is being forced to call her Miz Lilian Jean and is expected to step in the street so Lillian Jean can walk by. Cassie refuses demanding that her and Lillian are the same age and she should not have to address her with a title, nor should she have to step into the street for a child to walk by or anyone for that matter. Cassie's grandmother is insistant that she does these things, so Cassie does it reluctantly. Cassie being the child that she is does not undestand her grandmother's reasoning, why would she allow anyone to treat us like that. Throughout the novel Cassie is fighting to keep her self-worth in tact. Though she is just a young child she knows that people should be treated equal. Whether you are white or black should hold no valitity in the person that you are. The lesson learned in this novel is to believe in yourself and your convictions. Obstacles may come, but never let them stop you.
Rating: Summary: Roll Of Thunder Hear My Cry Review: I am a 5th grade student at Waldron Mercy Academy (ACC). Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry was a great book. It was like what happened in the world in the 1870's.The story was when the white people were racist. In the story Whites had a lot more things than Blacks. Each time I read a chapter I always had tears in my eyes. When a chapter or a sentence came up they always had a meaning to it. The kids in the book were always getting into trouble. They were the Logan family. The Logan family had 2 whole acres of land and they wouldn't give it away. Then on a stormy night nightmares hit the family, and tragedy started to happen. No matter how bad the terror was, the family always stuck together. After I read this book I never really thought about how bad Blacks got treated. Just for warning, this book is a tear-jerker. I think that this was a great book and for anyone who didn't read it, then get your tissues, and your chair, and start reading!!...

Rating: Summary: HORRIBLE! Review: This was absolutely the worst book I have ever read. It is so boring! I think Mildred Taylor should be ashamed of herself for writing this terrible book. If I had the option I wouldn't even give it one star because it doesn't even deserve a half of a star.
Rating: Summary: Stunning and Stark in Its Realism Review: The best thing about this book was that the narrator, Cassie, is nine, an age where you haven't learned to wear masks and fake things in life, an age where pretense doesn't make much sense. So I didn't doubt the sincerity of her voice as she told about her experiences, in a year when her world comes tumbling down. The book takes place in the South, in the 30's. Slavery has been abolished, but not its cousin---sharecropping. Most of the sharecroppers are black families who plant on white land, then have to pay the white owners more of their earnings than is fair. Cassie's family is lucky, they own their own plot of land, and she has never really thought about being black, or white. Until she is publicly humiliated by a white girl, riders come in the night, looking to hurt and kill blacks accused of crimes they didnt' commit, and a boy named TJ Avery is sentenced to jail for life, accused of murdering a man... This is one of those books that you wish wasn't dubbed as a childrens' book, so more adults would have the chance to enjoy it.
Rating: Summary: Roll of Thunder hear my cry Review: he book Roll of Thunder Hear my Cry takes place during the depression. Cassie Logan, the main character gets herself into all sorts of trouble when she tries to stick up for herself in front of the white people in her town. Cassie doesn't quite understand why white people treat blacks so poorly. Little man, Cassie's younger brother, always tries to keep himself out of trouble, and his clothes neat and tidy, until his first day of school. Christopher-john, Cassie's other brother, always tries to be just like his older brother Stacy. Stacy is Cassie's oldest brother who tries to be a good role model until he ends up where he's not supposed to be and gets embarrassed in front of the white people in his town. Then there's T.J., Stacey's friend. He is always getting himself or some one else into trouble. Mildred D. Taylor did an out-standing job on this book. Her creative, historical fiction novel was created around the Logan family during the depression. She used many situations of how African- Americans were treated. Just like the time in the book where Cassie and her brother were waiting in the store line to be waited on. It was their turn and then all of a sudden, a young white girl walks in and the storeowner ignores Cassie and Stacy as if they didn't even exists. She gives a great message on how African-Americans lived during those times. The book also shows what African- Americans went through to be treated equal. I really enjoyed this historical-fiction novel! It gave me a much better understanding of how African Americans were treated. Any reader who is interested in historical fiction will really enjoy this book. This book was written with a lot of detail, facts, and expression on African Americans. You're never going to want to put the book down. I would highly recommend this book to anyone!
