Rating: Summary: Rainbow Boys Review: Three high school seniors, a jock with a girlfriend and an alcoholic father, a closeted gay, and a flamboyant gay rights advocate, struggle with family issues, gay bashers, first sex, and conflicting feelings about each other.
Rating: Summary: An Unexpected FAVOURITE Review: I bought this book when I happened upon it at a book shop, because the back cover had a quote by Patricia Nell Warren that said (paraphrased) that this book will inspire acceptance of gayness in both straight students and about-to-come-out students. Being a bisexual many who is also a youth worker, I grab anything that shows this sort of promise. I was not disappointed with Rainbow Boys. Sanchez has woven a believable, unflinchingly honest tale of three very different high school boys who discover just how similar they really are. It was wonderful to read a story that was sexuality positive while leaving sex to the imagination.
Rating: Summary: Original view on the subject... Review: This Young Adult novel should be owned by every high school library. It an original, well written look at the life of gay youth in America. The author's tone is clear and optimistic, and the three main characters are achingly familiar. I hope we see more from this author in the future. There's something of a classic feel to this book, and it's more optimistic than many books on the subject for this age group. Buy this book for teens in your family, whatever their sexual orientation. They'll be hard pressed not to identify with the characters....and the issues Sanchez deals with teach important lessons.
Rating: Summary: The best book you can read Review: This was a very inspirational book.I always though gay guys always acted one way and were pretty gross. After reading this i have a whole new respect for the gay and lesbian community.I really used to look down on lesbians too considering im a girl, but they are normal just like us so i dont see why people have to beat them up,call them names, and look down upon them.I recomend this book to anyone who is really narrow minded or is a gay or lesiban.
Rating: Summary: A Great Story for Teenagers-- and Their Parents Review: What a great book about three gay teenagers. Jason is a jock and has a girl friend so he is sure nobody knows he is gay. Nelson dyes his hair lemon-lime and paints his nails, so everybody knows. Kyle, though not good at contact sports, is on the swim team and is somewhere in between. These boys are all seventeen; they all deal with coming-out in their own individual ways-- from their relations with other students, their parents and each other. Even though the novel is a bit predictable, it is very upbeat and instructive without being preachy. This book, of course, couldn't have been written a few years ago so things are better for gay teens now even with the advent of HIV. I cannot imagine the thrill of finding something like this book in my high school library in the 50's. As Lily Tomlin says in one of her monologues: "there were no gay people then; we were just shy." I liked all three boys immensely and was pleased with the ending. From what little I know of gay teenagers, I'm convinced Mr. Sanchez has created honest, believable characters. A usual addition is a list of services available to gay teens at the end of the book. RAINBOW BOYS should be required reading for high schools students-- both gay and straight, their parents, their teachers and high school guidance counselors as well.
Rating: Summary: A touching story - a little heavy on teen self-help Review: You will enjoy this book. I read it in one delightful sitting on a rainy evening. The characters came to life, aroused me at times, made me almost cry a couple times as I thought of some of my own really awful experiences coming out in high school, but brought me right back to the triumphs of surviving high school and those experiences. This reviewer only gives the book 4 stars because the author tries SO hard at times to make the book self-help for teens when it could have just been an absolutely wonderful on its own. Do not let this deter you from reading it or recommending it to any teenager - it is great and informative, and the last few pages offer resources for teens. Maybe I should've just given it 5 stars and let it go, but the self-help angle takes away from the integrity and flow of the story from time to time.
Rating: Summary: I suggest reading this book... Review: this book teaches you rights and tolerance about all types of gay people, i finished this book in a week, and i really enjoyed reading it. Rating: Summary: a true to life, riveting work... Review: this book was amazing!! reading as a gay teenager having just come out, Rainbow Boys excellently portrayed the struggles that homosexuals face in a primarily heterosexual world. the characters were true to life, and never strayed far from their inner-guidance, whatever it may have been. i personally have faced obstacles and glories similar to those of the characters, so relating to them was no problem. i hope to hear more from Alex Sanchez in the near future!
Rating: Summary: O, how I wish.... Review: It's books like Rainbow Boys that make me wish I were a gay teen. The characters were believable and compelling, the plot was quick and interesting. The book was touching and suspenseful. A must-read for a boy who's about to come out of the closet.
Rating: Summary: A Great Book for Struggling Teens Review: Rainbow Boys is a great book for teens struggling with their sexuality, as well as parents and friends of those same teens. It addresses many of the issues ...homosexual teens face in a realistic and educational way, while still being a great read. The characters are well-drawn and you come to care about their lives. While at times it may have felt like the author was trying to include too many issues, that's not necessarily a bad thing. I was especially impressed by the list of resources at the end. I admire the fact that the author isn't just writing for entertainment alone, but also recognizes the responsibility of ...homosexual authors today to educate, inform and assist. I highly recommend this book.
