Rating: Summary: Very good, but a little confusing Review: I really enjoyed this book, but I was a little disappionted in the ending. I think the author could have done something a little more fulfilling. Also, the palace where the Beast lived confused me as well as Beauty. It seemed like I could never really identify where in the castle I "was". And I was never quite sure if Beauty was dreaming something or was really there. But Rose Daughter was really good, and the background on the Beast was really neat. Once I got started on it, I couldn't put it down until it was finished!
Rating: Summary: Different from Beauty, but still very good. Review: Comparing this to Beauty, I'd say that they're both very good but in different ways. Action doesn't make up a big part of either book, so be warned. But the lack of it doesn't keep you from being sucked into the book and not being able to close it until the end.If I described the books as colors, Beauty would be orange or brown, and Rose Daughter would be something pale. Rose Daughter is much more dream-like. Magic has more of a presence and goes beyond the spell cast over the Beast. It's far more thought-provoking than Beauty as well.I, at least, thought that the characters were better developed. So, all in all, I liked this book. Who know's maybe you will too? ^_^
Rating: Summary: Read this Today! Review: Think you can guess the ending? Bet you won't! This book is just plain wonderful! The ending will probably surprise you! I reccommend you by a copy today!
Rating: Summary: It was OK, but slow! Review: I read Rose Daughter fairly quickly because it started out very good and I wanted to see how it would end. The author stops to describe every little detail, making for a very slow reading. I got to the end expecting a dramatic ending to go along with the rest of the book, but it wasn't very exciting at all. Like the endings where suddenly someone woke up from a dream. The author could definately have done something better.
Rating: Summary: "Which one do you like?" Review: I really agree with the reader from Princeton, NJ "Everyone has a favourite", June,'98. Both Rose Daughter and Beauty are very good and well worth reading. The author has an interesting perspective. I also think that I prefer Beauty but if you like Mckinley, fantasy, Beauty and the Beast, or just thought provoking reading, buy both.
Rating: Summary: Mckinley has done it again! Review: This lovely re- retelling of Beauty and the Beast (this is her second brilliant attempt) is a winner. Told in a sensitive, imaginative and original way, she still manages to stay roughly true to the fairy tale. Haunting: highly recommended!
Rating: Summary: Every rose if different Review: Like every rose is different so is Robin McKinley's Beauty and the Beast stories. I found Rose daughter to be a darker side of the story that really made it come to life. I would not recommend this book for the casual or light reader because it is deep and thought provoking. But it explains many things that I had not thought of.
Rating: Summary: Vague and lacking action... Review: Like a lot of other people, I had read Beauty and loved it, and so looked forward to Robin McKinley's retelling of the Beauty and the Beast story. I found the first 1/3 of the book fascinating, but as I got farther into the story, I found myself getting frustrated at the lengthy, yet vague, descriptions of things. It was strange how she could go on in great detail about how various roses or rooms looked, yet at other times I found myself re-reading a passage several times trying to figure out what was going on. I really disliked the ending, too--after several re-readings I finally figured out what had happened. The author's imagery was certainly very beautiful, but sometimes it was so out there that it was difficult to catch her meaning. I prefer Beauty much, much more.
Rating: Summary: What happened, Robin? Review: I was SO excited when this book came out- "Beauty" , of course, having been one of my all-time favorite books as a girl. Surely the amazing Ms.McKinley could strike gold again, especially with such a beloved story! But... But... I started reading the book and... nothing! I could not get into the book at all. The exciting, colorful immediacy of "Beauty" seemed to have vanished... All that seemed to be left was a dull, abstract narrative where the heroine spent an incessant amount of time puttering about her flowers. I felt very disappointed indeed. First "Deerskin," now this! What happened, Robin?
Rating: Summary: I can't say enough about how satisfying this book was. Review: I read her first re-telling of the Beauty and the Beast fairytale over 10 years ago, and was thrilled to see that she had released a new version. This one was much more satisfying for me, particularly because of the ending--I won't say more because I don't want to spoil it for anyone, but suffice to say it was the ending I have been craving for a Beauty re-telling for a long time.
