Summary: It gets better the farther into the story you get!
Review: Wow! I thought I'd get depressed reading this story but I was so compelled to go on just to see how Stanley held up under the enormous pressure and injustices. He kept on thinking and working when others would have given up. I love his spirit and his perseverence, resilience and lack of cynicism. I "tried it out" on my fifth grade son and was sure he'd reject it... but he never put it down. I encouraged him to get through the first few chapters and it would get better. He did and he loved it too! Food for thought and discussions for weeks and even months.

Review: Have you ever read Holes? If not I am going to tell
you about it. I really liked it because it was about a
boy that got in trouble at school and got detention. He
was walking home and suddenly some shoes fell of the sky.
It was from a guy that had stole a professional baseball
player shoes. And the police catched him with the shoes. So
he got sent to court. The judge told him to choose one or
to go to prison or go to camp. He chooses to go to camp but
he did not know that he never isn't coming back home. That
was an spectacular book.

Summary: A Great Read for Patient People
Review: Holes is a book about the struggles of a family through generations and how they overlap, and how resolves come through this. The story is mostly about a boy named Stanley Yelnats who is wrongly accused and is sent to Camp Green Lake for 18 months. There he is forced to do the back breaking work of digging a hole 5' wide and 5' deep all the way around every day. There he meets a kid who unbeknownst to him is a relative to the person who gave his family a curse because Stanley's great-grandfather didn't do what the gypsy asked. Now what has happened to his family is that his grandfather lost a great fortune in the stock market to a criminal, him going to Camp Green Lake, and many more. After Stanley finds a valuable object that seems to be the reason of them digging, and you learn about the criminal from his grandfathers past you get whisked into an adventure that gives you the reason why from the opposite story, and in the end everything turns out good. Therefore I think this book was good because of the relationship between the two stories and how they overlapped in different ways making it take one story and then in the same place have the characters in the story do almost exactly the same thing. Also how the two stories will give you a reason for this happening or what happens after one story ends that point. Another thing I liked were the morals of friendship, loyalty and optimism. Friendship and loyalty were potrayed in the relationship of Stanley and his friend Zero, and how one would sacrifice for the other. Optimism was portrayed in Stanley's family and how they kept their hopes up and endured the hard times. Another great thing is how the story was fun in ways like little jokes here and there and the beginning of camp, and don't forget the funny nick names. These little things made this story great. I would recommend this book to all people who have some patience and like books that alternate from one thing to another a lot because the book is slow and usually alternate at the really good part, but if you can get past that it is a great book and I encourage you to read it.

Summary: There's Something Below the Surface.
Review: This book was recommended to me by about 100 different 3rd-7th graders. As someone who is interesting in what youth are reading, I asked kids I taught and counseled at camp if there were any books they thought I should read. HOLES always was mentioned. I now understand why.

HOLES is the story about Stanley Yelnats IV. Stanley's family is not very wealthy and Stanley's father is an inventor who works with old sneakers. Stanley is convicted of stealing a pair of shoes worn by a famous baseball player that were going to be auctioned off for a children's home. Stanley is sentenced to work at Camp Green Lake, a place that is neither a camp, green, nor a lake. Every day the "campers" have to dig a five foot by five foot by five foot hole. While at Camp Green Lake, Stanley befriends another boy, Hector Zeroni. The boys' lives quickly become intwined as events of the story unfold.

HOLES is an exciting book and rather well written. Much of the story reminded me of the movie COOL HAND LUKE and Stanley is in many ways just like Cool Hand Luke. However, the story is also greatly different from that wonderful movie, especially how HOLES constantly weaves together two seemingly different stories from two different time periods; an element that made me enjoy the story that much more.

Overall, an intriguing book filled with twists and turns that children love and that adults will enjoy, too.

Summary: GREAT BOOK!!!!!!!
Review: This book was one of the best books I have ever read. I reccomend it to all ages!!!! Even adults! It is about a boy, Stanley Yelnats (notice that his last name is his first name spelled backwards.he mentions that a lot in the story.) who steels a basketball players shoes.............and gets sent to a camp called Camp Green Lake (but there is no lake!!!) where every day they have to dig 1 hole 5 feet wide and 5 feet deep as there punishment. If they find something that might be valuable they bring it to the mean warden and, if it turns out to be valuable they get the rest of the day off. Go throgh the hardships he has to face!!! Then to top it all off there is an exciting ending!!! Its a long book, but believe me, it's worth it!! Read more to find out what happens to Stanely Ylenats.
