Rating: Summary: FANTASTIC FANTASY Review: have read about a dozen heinlein novels; he was, afterall, my boyhood idol (along with wilbur smith). so i feel qualified in saying "glory road" is one of his finest, frothy, rambling tales. the first 40 pages or so -- pure magic. have read them at least 30 times alone.
Rating: Summary: Great until the last, then just okay Review: The first two thirds of this book is an odd and gripping tale that always leaves you wondering what in the heck is really going on. The answers do come slowly, and by the time the questions are all answered and the great adventure is over, the book really slows down. At first I was a little upset to realize that I was reading pretty much a pure fantasy novel, rather than science fiction as I believed it to be. Before long though I didn't care, as the story twisted through bizarre lands and amazing adventures. I think the book could have come to a close though before it did. I was not a fraction as interested in the last third of the book, which dealt mostly with society and relationships on a different world. Even though it caused me to consider many customs in the U.S. and realize their ridiculousness, it stopped being adventure, and bordered on soap opera. Still a better book than most though.
Rating: Summary: All should walk the Glory Road Review: Ever wanted to walk out of your daily tedium ? I read this book for the first time decades ago, and I can still feel its impact. I wanted to buy an expensive boat last month. Everybody I know counseled against it. And then I remembered. Dum Vivimus, Vivamus. While we're alive, let's LIVE ! I'm still looking for the sense of wonder and the feeling of romance I had as a kid. . . Read this book, and then live it.
Rating: Summary: A great short read! Review: If not Heinlein's best, Glory road is a fantastic book for new Heinlein readers.
Rating: Summary: Heinlein's parody of Heroic Fantasy Review: This was the first book I read as a kid that I still reread almost yearly. In addition to being a very engaging, well told story, it always yields a new "oh, so that's what he meant by that!" every time. As an adult I realized that it was a parody of all the Conan stories I'd read as a kid. All of Heinlein"s books are fun to read, but this was an incredible experience to have as a 14 year old boy. Glory Road would hold up well as a screenplay, much better than the decidedly un-Heinleinian massacre of "Starship Troopers".
Rating: Summary: Great, but i dont like the ending Review: This book was one of the best science fiction books i have read.. It delves into matters i have not read of before, such as what does the hero do after the quest is over? And in spite of all the good things i wished the ending would of been different.. I am saying if i was in that situation i doubt i would do the same thing.. i wouldn't of left.. but i like books that make you think..
Rating: Summary: I Loved this fast paced Fantasy till the last Chapters Review: This book was gonna be my #1 Favorite untill i got near to the end. I read the end and i was little shocked at the ending it messsed the book up in so many ways. The ending could of been 1000 times better. I wish i would of read this book and stoped before the end so i wouldent have disliked the book by its ending
Rating: Summary: Actually it is 3 and a half stars Review: This is an excelent book untill the last quarter. It has some of the best action scenes I've ever read. It is very humorous. Most of all the three protagonists (Oscar, Star, and Rufo) are all intresting and very likable. Problem is the plot ends in the third quarter and the book looses track of it self.
Rating: Summary: My very favorite Heinlein. Review: Growing up, I was never really encouraged to read science-fiction (what with being a girl and all). Heinlein was my first taste of science fiction and I took to him like a fish to water. Glory Road was and shall forever remain my favorite Heinlein. I wanted (and still want) to BE Star. She is everything a woman could want to be--beautiful, intelligent, independent whilst maintaining a need for her man, loving, and strong. This book is MY personal ultimate fantasy. I am sure that other female readers will agree that Heinlein has created characters which strengthen and inspire young women. I only wish I had been encouraged to enter the world of science fiction at a younger, and more impressionable, age. Instead I, like countless other young women, faced the world of Sweet Valley High. Alas, Glory Road is a novel for all to enjoy. However, I highly encourage young women to open their eyes and minds to Heinlein's work in general and this book in particular.
Rating: Summary: An excellent novel in the fantasy genre! Review: The Glory Road is probably one of Heinlein's best fantasy novels and shows his diverse talents as a novelist and a story teller. The story takes us through the adventures and misadventures of Oscar, or "Scar", as he is eventually dubbed. One of the best scenes is the fight with an ugly, troll-like creature named Igli. I was in tears, I laughed so hard. Mr Heinlein weaves a tail of adventure, love, justice, and change. The characters are likeable and real and the story is, at times, hard hitting. Well worth the read!
