Summary: Not worth it - buy another product
Review: I purchased this product and if I could do it all again I would not purchase it. I have had problems with it from almost the beginning. The unit constantly crashes and looses all battery power. This has happened during syncs or while just looking at the calendar. The PDA's batty level is high. Once it was at 96%. The only way to use it again is to do a hard reset - which erases all the data and to recharge it. This has happened several times. Toshiba support is awful and not helpful. another problem I've had is that the USB power sync cable I purchased broke a pin. This wasn't a part of the warrenty and Toshiba wanted $110 to repair the product. I am very dissatisfied and will not purchase another Toshiba product.

Summary: Three's a charm!
Review: I've been a Palm OS user for ages, in fact, ever since U.S. Robotics made the first Pilot. I depend on my palmtop to keep me on track and to help my old memory stay on top of all the things that a university professor has to do.

But the Palm OS is getting a little long in the tooth and my eyes are getting old. That little 160x160 screen of my Handspring Visor (platinum) is just too hard to read. Plus, the backlight leaves a lot to be desired. So, I decided to check out some of the newer devices as I need a PDA.

Based on an interview with Dale Coffing (...I decided to check out the PocketPC. I'm impressed. Of all the units I researched, the new Toshiba e740 seems like the most bang for the buck. I bought one a little over a week ago. The transition has been a bit rough. The first unit was part of the voluntary recall that the e740 is subject to. There's a problem with some of the units' backup battery that may result in a loss of data. Fortunately, the vendor was kind enough to swap out my unit. The second unit, however, died about six hours after I brought it home. Again, the vendor was great to replace it.

This last unit is working fine. As I work with the PocketPC OS and it's applications, I can see that I've got a very useful machine. There are also lots of add-on applications to let one customize their handheld to work they way one wants it to. The builtin WiFi (802.11b) is great and works well around my house, where I've installed an access point for my broadband cable connection. Battery life with the little lithium ion standard battery is something over three hours. I have yet to even get low on the big superbattery that is available as an accessory. The backlight is bright and the screen resolution and size makes it much easier for me to read. The Xscale 400MHz processor is speedy too, but not quite as fast as my notebook.

I'll give this unit a four-star rating. The only reason it's not a five is because of the initial startup difficulties I've faced. I'm looking forward to a long-term relationship with this little computer. Be sure that you get an extra cradle for the office. You'll want to have an easy view of your e740 when you need to check an phone number or your calendar.

N.B. I really don't know exactly how this review got placed with the e330 as I have an e740. So, please understand that my comments apply to the e740 and not the e330.

Summary: The worst mistake I've ever made
Review: It isn't the latest and greatest, but you get good value for your money. If you can live without WiFi and Bluetooth this is the way to go. The battery life is enough for about six hours of hard use. There are a few recommendations that I have, upgrade to ActiveSync 3.7 and do a soft reset before syncing. Also, get a 256M SD card for backups and possibly music. If you're into music headphones are a must and download a copy WinamPAQ, which is a freeware WinAmp for pocket PC. For software development either get Visual Studio .Net ($), eMbedded Visual Basic (free) or eMbedded Visual C++ (free). SQL Server CE is also available for free.

Summary: Outstanding Handheld
Review: Over the past two years, I've used iPAQs, Jornadas, and most recently the Audiovox Maestro Pocket PC. The Toshiba e330 outperforms them all as far as I'm concerned.

First, the e330 is small, thin, and ultra light. It has the same form-factor as the e310, but with some noteworthy enhancements. Most notably, the e330 has the new 300MHz XScale Processor from Intel. Although the individual programs don't seem much affected by the increased speed, when you're using multiple programs, you can really tell a difference in performance. The e330 also has 64MB of RAM, giving you more room for programs, games, files, etc. The scroll-wheel on the upper left-hand side of the unit makes flipping through web pages and eBooks a one-handed affair. Last, but certainly not least, the e330 has the MediaQ video chip. This not only makes on-screen animation less jerky, but also makes writing on the screen appear without a lag.

I highly recommend the e330 Pocket PC from Toshiba. Five stars without question.

Summary: Toshiba Product Support Very Poor
Review: The e330 unit seems nice but mine stopped working after two days. The only way to restart the unit is to turn the master switch off & on. This erases all of you data and it usually needs to be done on a daily basis. Called Toshiba's PDA "hotline". After being on hold for 15 minutes an operator took my name and number and said a support rep would call me shortly. Nobody called. I have now gone through that routine every day for the last three days. It's too bad - the product seems well designed but there is no excuse for the poor manufacturer support. I recommend buying an Ipaq. I used to have one and had no problems with it.
