Rating: Summary: A must have. Review: This was an excellent travel guide to have. We took this guide book everwhere. It was humorous and honest in its reviews. We found in general that their beach and food recommendations were right on. I'd definitely look for their books first on other islands when I visit them.
Rating: Summary: Needs to be updated Review: Great book, but needs to be updated. There are many new establishments and activities he hasn't covered.
Rating: Summary: Best Guide Book! Review: We used this book (& saw others using it) during our recent trip. From the hotels, to restaurants, to the driving guide, to the humourous tips they give, it was right on target. Thanks so much....made us miss some of the pitfalls of being in a new place and what to do when. Thanks so much!
Rating: Summary: Awesome book! Review: This book is extremely valuable! Authors made a tremendous job exploring and describing Big Island. Everything is clear, tons of information. No need for any other sources - maps, books, etc. Just this publication!
Rating: Summary: Written by locals not authors on vacation. Review: What a great book, I can't put it down. They do an excellent job of explaning all the hotels and beaches. The maps a great and plentiful and all have mile markers, very needed since many beaches aren't on marked roads. They are witty writers I've gotten a number of good laughs. They snorkel a lot and have many recommendations not only for just the best beaches, but where on the beach. They explain what side, how far to swim out and warn you of dangers. Great job guys!
Rating: Summary: See the big island. Review: My wife and I went to the big island in July of this year (2001)for a conferance. We decided to stay an extra week or so. The Frommer's Guide to Hawaii SUCKED compared to this book. The thing I appreciated most about The Big Island Revealed was the fact that is was so easy to navigate. When you went to a map, the information you wanted was denoted by a page number or had an additional map to go to with more detail. The people who wrote this book obviously had been through each step and documented them with precision. It was like The Big Island For Dummies! Get it.
Rating: Summary: A must have for your trip Review: This book is witty and informative. It will guide you to sites and scenes you will otherwise miss! And it will save you money when you get there. I hope in their next version that they devote more space to other activities such as running the Big Island. I have never seen so many runners, and after running a week there, thera are some tips and tricks!
Rating: Summary: Useful info not found elsewhere Review: This had information on beaches and snorkel spots missing from other current guidebooks. Very readable.
Rating: Summary: Not as good as their Kauai book Review: I am so disappointed. We bought this book (1 copy for us and 5 for family members) just before moving to the Big Island last month, because of how great the Doughty and Friedman Ultimate Kauai book was. After arriving here, we put it to use. It sure is lacking good places to eat and beaches, and is very negative. Perhaps my expectations were set too high by the fabulous Kauai book, or perhaps the authors couldn't expend the same effort as they did on the Kauai one. Looks like they ran out of steam. I will hunt for another, better book on the Big Island. Hope their new Maui Revealed isn't even worse.
Rating: Summary: Everything you need to know Review: I have used this guide and their guide for Kauai in several trips to Hawaii. For self-planners who love to get out and about and find some hidden gems, this is the book for you. Their system of using mileposts on maps and descriptions assures you will find the places they talk about. Their descriptions have integrity -- a must for dining and accomodations. The organization of the book makes it really easy to use -- particularly while you are driving about. I'm about to go back to the Big Island and if I don't find my copy in my pile of books I'm going to buy another one!
