Rating: Summary: Good guide Review: Like all Lonely Planet guides, this is excellent.
Rating: Summary: Outstanding guide book for London! Review: My wife and I just returned from a trip to London and found this book invaluable. It was the one book we carried with us every day to every place. This book offers high quality, accurate information about London. A great index in the back adds to the utility of the book. The construction of the book itself is high quality, so that it doesn't fall apart during the stress of travel. If you are going to London, bring this book.
Rating: Summary: Not impressed! Review: Not very successful: of all the guides this one seems to have a hidden agenda that sometimes borders on the absurd. Badly written and badly researched. The writers can scarcely conceal a latent dislike of the place. I hated this book!
Rating: Summary: Perfect Size and Great Highlights Review: One of the few guides that you can actually slip into a purse or bag and utilize. Convenient tube and location maps on both the inner and outer flaps that were extremely helpful. Although I was staying with a friend and did not use it for accomodation or food, I did find the highlights of things to see in London very informative and interesting. Particularly---they highlight a "not to miss" list at particular sights, which made certain gallery viewing all the more interesting. Take this book along and buy a current Time Out magazine for up to date restaurant choices.

Rating: Summary: Perhaps an interesting buy when it's on sale Review: The hotel section seems OK and I didn't check out all the suggested bars, restaurants. This travel guide mainly covers mainstream stuff most people know already. If you are looking for a good condensed travel guide to the point for what's really going on in London -even up to Hip and Happening- I suggest you buy the "Virgin Guide" (and buy Time Out magazine in London!). I expected a better signal to noise ratio from a Loneley Planet guide. My rating of this guide: Average.
Rating: Summary: One Of the Top guides on London Review: There are many guides to London. From what I can see there are two good general guidebooks. These are the Eyewitness Travel (DK) guide which is the one that I personally prefer or Lonely Planet (the present book). These two books are both just around 500 pages and both are tremendous efforts. They are well balanced guides with lots of photos, maps, history, etc. Both are clearly 5 star guides. I would rate both (and DK Eyewitness Travel and Lonely Planet) head and shoulders ahead of Frommers or similar books that are less well balanced, i.e.; fewer photos. Overall, the DK guide has better photos and visuals. In fact I am amazed every time I pick up and read that DK guide with the quality of the photos and technical detail. Those graphics make for a better souvenir so it gets the nod as the better book, but it is a close call. The city has lots of fun things to see and do but time is usually limited and it is expensive - so these guides are good investments. This book is well balanced and like the DK guide it pulls a lot of things together such as history and culture, food, towns and lots of interesting information on London. The book brings it all to life with just magnificent photos and maps, including subway maps. I have one suggestion, and that is to buy the guide before planning your trip. The guide has lots of information and tips on places to see. Either case this is an excellent buy. 5 stars. Jack in Toronto
Rating: Summary: A Great Help! Review: This book was just what we needed in planning our trip to London. We loved all of the maps and the special walking guides section. The site descriptions helped us plan out where we wanted to go and we were able to figure out all of our transportation on the flight over. This guide was a great help!
Rating: Summary: Better than the first edition Review: This edition is much better than the previous one.
Rating: Summary: a great guide to a great city. Review: This is an excellent guide to London. the best way to travel is without a guidebook but often a good book can simplify thingsand make life easier- and this book does just that The book is organised by locations ( west end, north london, etc). For each sectiono the city there are extensive descriptions of places to visit, restaurants and other attractions. There are also useful chapters on getting sround using local transpotation and on places to stay(broken down by budget). Unlike other "tourist" guide books , this is not filled up with glossy photographs and hype. As with the other Lonely planet books, the target audience are independant travellers who will find lots of essential information - such as locations of supermarkets, laundromats and other conveniences. The maps at the back of the book are easy to read and accuratew butI would also recommend buying a pocket subway map ( easily available in london) because all travellers will need to refer to it very ofen and it is tedious to have to refer to the back of the book constantly. only problem i had while using this book was that all attractions are listed with the name of the nearest underground station but there is no information on how to walk to the place from the stations.
