Rating: Summary: Yet another fabulous Lonely Planet book! Review: This is easily the best travel book I've ever bought. It's written in an engaging style, and is absolutely crammed with useful information. I only wish I had heeded it in the matter of hotels; I was badly taken for a ride on my (emotional) hotel choice. I know better now! Lonely Planet's book made my solo trip much more comfortable, and reduced a potentially overwhelming city to the more manageable proportions of its neighborhoods. Although other books I looked at did the same, Lonely Planet's was the only one that made me *want* to visit them.
Rating: Summary: Lowdown on London Review: This was the perfect guide to have for my first trip to London. As always in Lonely Planet, the maps were extremely helpful and made getting around much easier. The book is the perfect size to throw in your bag so that you can take it with you to refer to while you're out and about. One thing that's nice is it has a lot of detailed information about some of the more popular sites that aren't necessarily on the brochures they pass out at the location. It was nice to pull out the book and read all these little details while actually standing in Westminster Abbey, for example, instead of just the brief leaflet they pass out. The listing of all the outdoor markets in the back was a bonus - I probably wouldn't have known where to find them without it.
There wasn't a very wide variety of clubs or bars (great selection for pubs though!), and a lot of the places they recommend are very touristy, so it helps to pick of some local info on that kind of stuff when you get there. This is, however, a GREAT guide for those getting their feet wet for the first time across the pond.
Rating: Summary: Very disappointed with this book Review: We just returned from London and Paris. The Paris book was very useful, however, the London book was not organized very well. The areas of London were not marked the same in the book as they were in the city. In some of the paragraphs describing things, it says that this really is not a good place to go, etc., etc.. The places to eat section did not describe where the restaurants were according to area and did not describe the food; good, fair, excellent. This book also gave little details and always referred to other books to buy. My husband and I walked London and took the underground and this book did not give us in detail where the sights were. If we had a car, the book would have been better, but we wanted to use public transporation and enjoy our vacation.
Rating: Summary: Seeing London the only way via Lonely Planet Review: What can one say, but the Lonely Planet is the best and as a native Londoner this book is up there with all the other ones I have read and used across the world.
Rating: Summary: This One is All You Need Review: ~I checked out just about all the london travel books at the book store, and decided to purchase just one - this one - before my trip. This book is slim - about 4.25 inches X 7.75 inches X .33 of an inch - and will fit easily in a purse. It has very useful maps of London, including a subway map (or, as the English say, a map of the underground). It has all the information you'll need for your trip, including travel from the airport to the city, tipping, hotels, shopping, restaurants,~~ entertainment, and, of course, the sights. The book devotes 20 pages to "Highlights" - the major tourist attractions. If you want to bring only one travel book to London, this should be the one!~
