Rating: Summary: blah, blah, blah Review: A seminal work, to which later guidebooks owe a large debt of gratitude. To say the least.

Rating: Summary: I've been to Burma many times Review: For your information (see review below), I am probably the UK's Burma expert with dealings from the Nobel Peace Prize Winner Daw Aung San Suu Kyi - to whom my Guide to Burma was dedicated - to academics, diplomats, etc. I am the author of several books on Burma & the leading Burma bookseller; check out my website if you don't believe me (www.mandalaybookshop.biz), or contact the Burmese Embassy in London. This guide book is my opinion a fine example of armchair travel writing.Nicholas Greenwood
Rating: Summary: There are better Burma guidebooks Review: I found this book out of date and difficult to use. Fortunately my travel companion had another Burma guidebook that served us well. Burma is a difficult place to travel in and a thorough guidebook is essential. I would also strongly recommend a local guide. It will make the trip a lot easier.
Rating: Summary: Dated Review: I found this to be a very dated, poorly put together book. The author seems to use it as a vehicle to boast of his own knowledge rather than supply the information the traveller needs. Much better to go with Lonely Planet or similar.
Rating: Summary: ... Review: I had the misfortune to read this book recently, I found it dull, predictable and it gave nothing that other better books have not said before. I was left wondering whether the author had ever been to Burma, in fact I believe he has just read a few guide books and then produced his own substandard attempt.
Rating: Summary: Guide Book to Burma Review: I liked this book for the very reason other reviewers did not -- it is not "just another guide book." It incoroprates cultural, political, and historic information along with suggestions of places to go, eat, and lodge. Since I have more interest in getting into the heart of places I visit rather than merely skiming the tourist-surface, Greenwood's book provided the extra guidance to help me get to where I wanted to go.
Rating: Summary: Excellent in its time Review: I must disagree with the last reviewer, whose point is wholly spurious. Of course this guidebook is out-of-date - it was published some 6 years ago, so anyone buying a guidebook dated 1996 has only themselves to blame. When it was published, it was easily the best of its time & remains a collector's item for opening the doors to the mysterious Golden Land.
Rating: Summary: very poor Review: I was very disapointed with this 'book'. I borrowed it from a friend who cancelled his trip a few years back. The other reviewers who still say it is relevant is a bit like saying a 166mhz PC is still a good buy. It will still do the basics but is hopelessly out of date and just about useless for modern applications. Luckily I was able to buy a used lonely planet when I was in Yangon or my trip would have been ruined.
Rating: Summary: Don't bother Review: I wish I hadn't shelled out for this book, it proved to be hopelessly out-dated. Burma is a difficult place to travel, doubly so if you don't have a decent guidebook. I'd recommend the LP guide over this.
