Rating: Summary: Smooth history and lush photos of Seattle's best loved place Review: Inside the Pike Place Market lives up to its title. It delivers a "day in the life" of the Market village, plus color pushed photos from angles never before seen. And, 20 recipes as a bonus. I collect Market books, photos, and printed ephemera but nothing since Victor Steinbruecks Market Sketch Book brings the reader so close to the people and activity of the Market as Rex-Johnson's Inside.....

Rating: Summary: My background as a chronicler of the Pike Place Market Review: People always ask me how a born-and-raised Philadelphian who spent many years living in Dallas, Texas, came to write three books about Seattle's world-famous landmark, the Pike Place Market. Here's the story. . . When I was in my mid-thirties, I was searching for my niche in life. I had been in advertising and public relations in Dallas, Texas, writing corporate newsletters and ads, and freelancing to such big-time (!) publications as "Texas Running," "I Love Cats," and the "Dallas Chamber of Commerce" magazine. But I had higher dreams, and in my "spare" time I wrote romance novels, a screenplay, and half a gothic vampire/time travel novel. Mercifully, none of my fiction was ever published, but I sat in our little condominium in Dallas toiling away for seven long years. In the summer of 1988, still with stars in my eyes, my husband and I attended a Romance Writers of America conference in Seattle, Washington. It was quite an event, with over 800 romance writers (many of them decked out in costumes that would befit their romantic heroines!) holed up at the Seattle Sheraton for several days of classes and meetings. While I went to class, my husband Spencer walked the city with his video camera. One evening he told me about this neat farmers' market he'd discovered right in the middle of downtown Seattle, as well as a really cool condominium complex just half a block away. The next day I skipped out of class to stroll through the Market with him. Immediately, I was enchanted. Although I'd grown up with farmers' markets on the East Coast, never had I seen such a vast collection of local farmers with such a bounty of produce. Not to mention four different fish stands swimming with all sorts of seafood. I loved the mix of people-everybody from wealthy women in diamonds and designer clothes to older people in wheelchairs and modest garb. The place seemed so egalitarian and democratic. When I spotted the condominium Spencer had described, I knew that if we could ever move to Seattle, that was the place we would want to live. Two years later, Spencer chunked his architectural partnership, I rented an apartment in our "dream" building, we packed our belongings on the back of a moving van, and were en route to Seattle with our cat Bo-Bo. "Seattle or Bust" became our motto. That first year, I began to shop at the Pike Place Market on an almost daily basis. I was like a sponge, learning as much about Northwest foods as I could, collecting recipes, meeting the Market's often idiosyncratic vendors and winning their friendship and trust. With my background in business, I thought of doing recipe cards and descriptive pamphlets for the food-related vendors in the Market, but after I took a course on cookbook writing and publishing, that idea morphed into writing a Market cookbook. When I went to the Seattle Public Library to see what other Market cookbooks had been written, I was amazed to discover that the last one had been compiled over ten years before. I had found my niche-I would write a Pike Place Market cookbook. I spent a few intense months writing recipes and sample chapters, then met an editor from the Northwest's largest publisher--Sasquatch Books--at a Northwest food conference. I told her my idea over lunch that day and she invited me to send some samples of my work and Spencer's pen-and-ink illustrations. Four days later, I received a letter in the mail asking me to set up a meeting immediately-Sasquatch Books liked my idea. I was a seven-year, overnight success! The "Pike Place Market Cookbook" came out in the spring of 1992, and has since sold over 57,000 copies. In 1993, Sasquatch Books published the "Pike Place Market Map," a project for which I wrote the copy and that Spencer illustrated. In 1995, Sasquatch published "That's Fresh: Seasonal Recipes for Young Cooks," which I co-authored with Chef David Wasson. In 1997, Ten Speed Press brought out the "Pike Place Public Market Seafood Cookbook." In the spring of 1998, the editorial director of Sasquatch Books came to me with the idea for a photo/essay book of the Market. I jumped at the chance to do my dream project-a visual tour of the Market where I could share with the world all the amazing personalities, venerable history, and fun factoids of the Market I had floating around my office files and in my head. "Inside the Pike Place Market" was published in October 1999. Here's what people are saying about my latest Pike Place work and photographer Paul Souders' striking images: "A visit to Seattle isn't complete without a stroll through the Pike Place Market. Photographs of the Market in full bloom complement Braiden Rex-Johnson's exquisite essays and delicious recipes."-Rebecca Staffel, Cookery Editor, amazon.com "[Inside the Pike Place Market makes] the Pike Place Market more intimate, more exotic, more familiar, and more thrilling to discover than ever before."-"CityFood" magazine "In her new book, "Inside the Pike Place Market," Braiden Rex-Johnson has woven together painstaking research and honest appreciation into a portrait of Seattle's premier farmers' market. . .The remotest corners of the Market are brought to light with entertaining profiles of hard-working shops and longtime vendors and a few recipes are included for those wondering what to do with all the fresh produce available. . . Lovingly written and well designed, "Inside the Pike Place Market" effectively captures the Market and its well-earned place in Seattle's history."-"Seattle Homes and Lifestyles" magazine "If you can't make regular visits to the Market, Rex-Johnson's stories and Paul Souders' richly colored photos make this volume the next best thing to being there." "Northwest Palate" magazine
Rating: Summary: It was almost as good as being there!!!!!!! Review: The book showed me quite a few of the things I missed on my visit to the Market. I will be making another trip to Seattle in March and have already highlighted the places in the market that I want to see. I have even found places that my six year old grandson will enjoy visiting also. I have fallen in love with Seattle and the Market. My thanks to the authors for allowing me to visit the Market right in my living room in Houston when ever the notion strikes me.

Rating: Summary: Amazing Photgraphy Brings The Experience To Life! Review: This is one heck of a book. The photos are terrific and it really takes the reader on a visual experience into Seattle. This book makes it easy to explain "fish tossing", where the market is, the smells, the noise, etc. I would recommend this book to everyone. I plan to pick up several copies to give as Xmas gifts. Thanks for a great "coffee table" book.
