Summary: Great for everyone, specially for students.
Review: This product is great, I been using Star Office like one year ago. The product for me works great, it has everything I need to make my work, before I use Star Office I used Office 97, and I could say that after a week of using Star Office and learning all the functions of the program I tought is better than Microsoft Office. What I use more is the word processor, and I ,like it a lot more than Microsoft Word.

I think this program is great specially for students and small bussiness that dont have a lot of money to pay in an Office Suite like Microsoft Office.

The programs is fully compatible with microsoft office files so thats is one less thing to be worry about, if you currently use microsoft office. ...

Summary: StarOffice grows more attractive with increased use.
Review: StarOffice has replaced the office suites from Lotus and Microsoft on my home PC. I can't imagine volunteering to upgrade either product.

When I first loaded StarOffice its unfamiliar layout, the Beamer feature, and poor reference documentation made me crazy. I actually uninstalled the product for a while. That's all changed. I love the knowledge/document management abilities of beamer, the web-like interface, and built in browser... to name a few features.

StarOffice 5.2 is a very well integrated product. It is not yet ready to challenge the market position of MS Office but Star's developers are on the right track. Version 5.2 is an excellent choice for home use, small business, and students. Particularly students (or their parents) who are concerned about the financial consequences of software piracy that go with "borrowing" a copy of MS Office!

Summary: More than MS Office
Review: This office productivity suite was reccomended to me by a friend who claimed that it was the "most versatile and adaptable office suite he had seen". I was doubtful at first but am convinced and the best part is that it is free for distribution to all your computer junkie friends as well as download from the Sun site. I purchased it only due to the fact that it includes the users manual and aprt from that who can argue with the price. Compared to the MS Office gold edition which is far more expensive it is a steal.

Summary: Slow and Cumbersome
Review: I was frankly disappointed with the performance of this product. It runs slow and the many small icons are hard to remember without constantly using the help. The graph capability for the spreadsheet program is limited compared to that in Microsoft Excel. Although it is cheaper than the Microsoft office software, you get what you pay for.

Summary: Excellent Product
Review: I initially wanted to test this product for evaluation only but in turn found that I use it exclusively over MS Office products. However, after installing the product, it had some problems displaying icons properly. This is due to my ATI All in Wonder 128 Pro video card having old drivers. After installing the new drivers (directx needed to be installed as well) the icons are displayed properly and I am excited to learn more about the product. Also, I'm having a little difficulty using a browser in conjunction with the suite and some of the drawing functions like the paint brush tool are difficult. I do enjoy the MS Office compatibility immensly and the price is right.

Summary: Lean and Mean
Review: I was looking for an office suite that gave me full access to Microsoft Office formatted files, but that was not as big and bloated (not to mention overpriced) as Microsoft's Office suite. This was for an older laptop that I carry around with me quite a bit, so I wanted to keep the installation size to a minimum. StarOffice 5.2 was the ticket. Not only does it have a very small footprint on my hard drive (under 30MB for the total install), it also handles all Microsoft Office (as well as the SmartSuite) files with ease.

The bonus that it is cross platform compatible with Windows *and* Linux (and Free BSD, I'm told) is just icing on the cake.

The price was right for the CD and manuals (I had been using the basic free downloadable version for months and decided to go with the Deluxe version after my good experience with the standard version). I would highly recommend this office suite to anyone that is looking for a good alternative to Microsoft's bloated (and overpriced) office suite.

Summary: Wow! An A+++ Product
Review: I can't believe that all these years I've been spending money on Micrososft office, not any more. This product does everything I need from spreadsheets to word documents. After using this product only a couple of times, I didn't even notice the difference between MS Office and Sun StarOffice. I'd definitely pay [the cost] just to get the manual and backup media. What a great deal!

Summary: No need to buy it - it is free
Review: Nice office suite, a little slow and sluggish, but not bad! Best of all: it is free! No need to pay 40 bucks for this. You can download it for free or get it on one of those CDs that come with many computer journals.

Summary: Too broken on Windoze
Review: Here are just a few of the limitations:

* Unable to support SSL mail. * Unable to support SSL news. * Easily exploitable with Java holes. * Blue Screen of Death showed up way too often. * Broke other software on installation such as WinCVS. * Had several runaway processes. * Errors in setting up mail required re-installation for repair. * File format matching is "ok", but it is missint too much that I use in MS Office.

On Linux, it runs much better, but the limitations with respect to encryption and Java still apply.

I would like to break away from Microsoft, but Star Office is not the solution I would like to use.

Summary: Why pay when they give it way for free?
Review: Am I missing something? Sun, the publisher of this product, offers StarOffice 5.2 as a free download on their web site - no gimmicks, no catches. The only hitch is the 102MB file size, quite big for modem users. Just leave your computer on overnight and download it.

Amazon will probably pull this review, but why not inform their customers? We're mostly repeat buyers here, and some people need to own the CD anyway. Show your support - Take the $ you just saved and buy something else on Amazon.
