Summary: Good for Easy Tasks Only
Review: Sun touts Star Office as a competitor to Microsoft Office. Hardly, for few reasons. One, "Starbase" database is not a stand-alone desktop database and even Sun's consultant could not show me how to use it. Two, Star's functionality is not even a quater of MS Offices. How about customization? MS Office has VBA for building apps on its platform, Sun doesn't. This product doesn't do anything for the developer. However, there are many improvements over previous version.

Summary: 95% of the power for 10% the price
Review: I hate to say it, but there are a few ways in which Start Office is not quite as effective as Microsoft office. However, these are only in speciallized uses, such as reading very old, text delimited spread-sheets (Star's integrated software automatically loads ascii files into the word-processor). However, for the average user, Star Office is 100% as good, and for the atypical user its still 90-95% as good as Microsofts. Considering how overpriced MS Office is, Star is great deal, being 10% the cost of a typical, proffessional edition from microsoft. Also, Star doesn't read and write MS file 100% perfectly, but it does read them -- MS does not read the formats Sun devised for Star Office. And the files are store much more efficiently. This is currectly what I use at home under linux, while I installed the standard version of Star Office in the Window 95 box I built my sister. (With Star Office 6.0 on its way, Microsoft may soon be in real trouble in the office area.)

Summary: Star Office 5.2
Review: Initially a little hard to get used to, but once you master the user interface, you'll be hooked. You can do almost anything with Star Office that you can with Microsoft Office.

The capability of opening and saving to MS Office file formats makes this the program to have.

I use Star Office exclusively for all of my work, on both my Windows and Linux machines.

Summary: great product
Review: once you get used to this product you will not want to use anything else. there is a little learning curve but not much if your used to using office. even if you don't need the platform independence, you still want to use 5.2 over office 2000. i really like being able to do everything in one place.

Summary: It's a MUST for multiple platform users
Review: I usually do not like writing reviews for products because some of them have good and bad qualities at the same time but on this occasion it is worth spending a couple of minutes to talk about my impressions since the price is nothing compared with what you get. I tried SO both on Windows and Linux OS and the result is: "simply the best Office Suite ever". I use it for my maths and statistics notes, the result is a better productivity using STAR MATH. Not to mention the Spreadsheets and a much more integrated and intuitive database. Of course the price is accessible for everyone, I would pay even more for a product like this. I have to admit that Microsoft Office is more stable on a Windows Platform but I still prefer StarOffice. The only drawback I found is that SO uses a lot of resources and I suggest 128 MB of RAM. OFFICE 2000 has the same problem as far as I am concerned.

Summary: Good Price, Good Program!
Review: Star Office is one of the best software suite out on the market. It has almost the same features as Microsoft Office, but its cost is a whole lot cheaper! I'd recommend it to everyone!

Summary: Multiplatform Masterpiece
Review: With the capability of working on so many OS's, this product's versitility is as good as its operability. Never before have I used a produce of such depth without running into bugs or glitches (see MS Windows 2000 if you want glitches). The word processor is more than capable, but the spreadsheet is wonderful. While it took a few days to learn some of the differences between this and MS Office, it was well worth the effort. Why has nobody else realized that great software does not need inflated prices? Also, it is great that when a new version is released, you can just download it (without paying $200+ for the upgrade). A must use!

Summary: Not bad for an inexpensive office suite
Review: I've used Star Office on a Mandrake 7.0 Linux platform and I've found it to be nearly as good as Microsoft Office 2000. It doens't have as many features or as much integration, but then again, most people don't use even 10% of the features in MS Office. Word Document compatability is a plus, but some characters such as quotation marks got lost in the conversion process. Hopefully Sun will fix this in the next release. Star Office also runs a bit sluggishly compared to its MS cousin, but it is by no means painfully slow. For Linux users, Star Office is a MUST HAVE.

Summary: DON'T pay $700 for Microsoft Office 2000 Premium!
Review: You get everything Microsoft Office Premium has and then some more. Believe me, I have both! Also Microsoft Off... screwed up my internet, and Outlook is the most unorganized pathetic attempt of an e-mail client. Go with Sun on this one, StarOffice is great and it will use ALL of my preveous Word, Excel, and Powerpoint documents. It even does Access files too(I don't do databases though). Great software. MUST HAVE!
