Summary: Wunnerful
Review: I just want to make a correction. In the editorial review, it states that the camera angles don't let you get very close to your character. Somebody hacked into the game, and somehow got the camera to rotate freely, which means that you can get to eye-level with your character. Go to a Neverwinter Nights forum and ask the developers or the general public how to get something known as "Brndon's Hack". After you get a good reply, follow the instructions they give you to get "Brandon's Hack". I promise it will make the game a lot more fun.

Summary: Alotta hype and for single players that's about it.
Review: Well after hearing for several years about the soon to be legendary Neverwinter Nights I have gone out and purchased it as well as it's expansion. My feelings still are very mixed. While it looks better than any other RPG I've had, there are things about it I simply cannot understand. For instance! You are told on various loading screens again and again to have a henchman. The makers have scaled difficulty to assume that you have one. Why doesn't this make sense? Well hmmmm... lets see. Maybe cause they're ai is misery. No matter it's setting your henchman cannot be trusted for a second not to get himself killed. Perhaps cause despite the heavily hyped conversion to 3rd ed, you are not even allowed to access your henchmans (A la original Diablo2) inventory or character sheet! Oh you can when you add the expansion pack. Except that still won't help you in the original, and far, far longer single player campaign since it is STILL UNSUPPORTED for NWN. Wow! Thanks for nothing! Hmmm then there is the storyline. Let me get this straight. I have been recruited to Neverwinter Academy by the Elven Paladin of Tyr Lady Aribeth. No matter my class or alignment. She just has a real good feeling about me I guess... and a good thing too since a plague has come to Neverwinter which Priests are conviently unable to heal or divine a single thing about no matter their religious denomination. The Lords of the Land are powerless to stop it, and in comes your 1st level character to find out the information that even High Priests and Archmages can discern nothing of. Yeah Right! Then there is the balance of play or perhaps better stated the lack thereof. There are basically two kinds of fights in this game. You either totally slaughter the enemy with such ease you will find yourself thinking "Man! If this is as hard as it get I might have to turn up the difficulty." That will become ashes in your mouth when you are turning it to easy cause you are SICK AND TIRED of fighting this same mini boss again and again and again. Since every time you fight him he hands you your head like it was nothing. (Even folks with a much greater tolerance of the games flaws than I have been forced to admit that you will end up having to switch difficulty levels more with this game than virtually anything else in living memory.) How they could have made so many excellently balanced BG games and then totally miss on this is a mystery to me. The mini quests are the worst kind of fed ex drivel. Obviously a certain amount of it is inevitable but this is too much. EVERYONE wants you to stop and talk to someone. Yada yada to infinity. If you are going to buy this game for it's single player campaign, do not do it. That is not what this game is about, and about two hours into tired mega overused side quests into the game you'll see why. For something that was supposed to be groundbreakingly new, this is a BORING game continuing to overuse the same old to death. It is safe to say the predicted "revolution" in crgps is not here yet again.

Summary: Great game...
Review: Since I did not play any multiplayer games, I'm going to focus on the single-player campaign that ships with the game. I really enjoyed this game. I bought it on a whim, because I needed a new game to play (I was bored with D2) and because the pictures on the box looked nice. I brought it home, installed it, started playing it, and was hooked. This was one of those games that kept me up all night playing (nevermind the fact that I had to work the next day), the kind of game that totally immersed me in the playing experience. I neglected my kids and husband to play this (just one more level, I promise! :) ). And, after I beat it once, I started again with a different character. The replay value is great; my new character, a spell-caster, plays WAY different from my melee character I had before.

The only problem that I had with running it was the "lack of virtual memory" screen. Don't know why it kept coming up, especially in the latter stages of the game, but it was annoying. Other than that, I enjoyed it intensely; heck, I still do. Buy it and have fun.

Summary: Multiplayer Delight!
Review: The last few reviews I've read have not done this game any justice. They didn't even mention that this is a "Free" online multiplayer game. No monthly charges, unlike so many other games out there. The multiplayer aspect is the best part. You can join the many guilds via the bioware webpage and schedule meets. There are thousands of user-created modules out there which detail every aspect of this game. There are player vs. player mods, capture the flag (or gold) type modes, team warfare, and of course traditional D&D modules. You can play as an individual in a multiplayer world, or join a party and encounter other parties, or basically whatever you want to do.

This game even includes a powerful, yet almost simple module building utility. There's loads of help on module building at the bioware website. I suggest you visit there to really get a feel for how much support this game has.

Now, for the technicals. I was running this game on an 800 MHz, 9700 ATI Radeon Video, 1/2 GB memory machine. It ran very well, even when I had it working as both a server and player! I did not notice too many AI movement problems. Occassionally I'd run too fast for my henchman, or there's be some sweet spots to take out a dragon from (some intentionally placed there). I didn't really have much of a problem with the Camera Views. I think those people who were having problems didn't quite set the graphics correctly. You can set up the game so that you see the tops of all the buildings all the time, and if this is on it may interfere with your view. Besides, as someone mentioned there's a camera "hak" which you can download and easily install and that fixes everything.

I've given this game 5 stars and I feel it deserves more. Much more. I've gone through the module that comes with the game and many other downloads. I've just purchased the Expansion pack and I'm looking forward to the many new monsters, spells, feat, and scenery that they've added. This is one of the best games I've ever owned in my 20 years of gaming experience. If only work was this much fun I'd be a multi-millionaire!

Summary: major bugs, lousy support
Review: Throughout the game, it will randomly crash. No error messages, nothing. Just all of the sudden, you're staring at your desktop. The game did this on my computer, my father's computer (which had all different components, even the ridiculously expensive video card they recommend for it-which, by the way, the game is totally geared for...can't even see the faces of the characters unless you have that video card), and on other people's systems (I chatted with a few other disgruntled players online). When I complained to the company about the crashing, they told me it was my system. That I needed newer drivers, needed to reinstall, etc. Basically, any excuse they could think of to say it wasn't a bug in the software. I've done everything they suggested and they're still emailing me back with excuses. I've been going back and forth with their support for over a month now. Even after I installed the latest drivers, they keep telling me I need newer drivers. How could my drivers be the problem when two different computers have the same problem?
The game play doesn't even follow D&D 3rd edition rules. If you try to play neutral, they force you to be either evil or good. They count lawful things (i.e taking money to enforce the law) as good only. A good character would not take money for enforcing the law or saving the damsel in distress. They also have a strange definition of cross-skills. ONLY a rogue can disable traps. ONLY a mage can cast spells. You have to multi-class to do anything. The official D&D rules say you only get the skills at half strength if it's not your class, but hey, at least you have the option.
Overall, by the time you get halfway through the game, you're bored anyway. Almost every scene has a trap or a locked door in it...it gets very old, since most characters (other than a rogue) cannot disable traps or unlock doors, even with a lock pick.
I regret buying the game-it was a waste of money. I have gone back to playing D&D on paper.

Summary: Too complicated
Review: A great game if you have loads of time on your hands. Many RPG-ers like the complexities of this game, like setting everything yourself, including countless subdivisions of attributes and skills. I just find it annoying and taking time away from fighting monsters and searching for powerful weapons and magical items. If you are a true, hard-core RPG fanatic, you will love this game. If you like to play old-school RPGs like the Ultima and Might and Magic series, Neverwinter Nights may be a little too over-the-top.

Summary: It looks pretty and looks fun... shame I can't even play it.
Review: Save your money...

At least until you have definitive answers that a patch is available that fixes the problems of even running the game on your computer.

I've had nothing but problems trying to get the game to even start on my computer. And going to the tech support site is a joke. Telling people to turn off the sound, one of the five senses used to enjoy a game like this, just to get it to play, is not my idea of a "fix"...

This is the reason I don't buy many computer games anymore.

Summary: Outstanding
Review: This is an outstanding game, with "endless" possibilities. The default music is good but most fan created music is top notch. The graphics are good, a nice 3D setting. Noting that the graphics are toned down so "everyone" can play it not just people with awesome cards. The toolset is outstanding achievement and as a person am willing to learn C++ just to use it. As for the OC it's ok, but fan created modules really stand out, such as Adam Miller's Shadowlords and Dreamcatchers. The only story that could top any of this is PlaneScape:Torment. Even now something along the lines are being implemented into NWN. As for the expansions, NWN has currently 1 expansion, a 2nd one is coming out later this year. Someone mentioned that Morrowwind has 2 expansions, Morrowwind has been out longer. And it has no Multiplayer. Neverwinter Nights does, My opinion, Buy Neverwinter Nights, you'll get more out of it. MUCH more...

Summary: Neverwinter Nights
Review: Neverwinter Nights is a very fun and interesting game but it does have its quirks. For one thing the constant load screens can be a pain. Early in the game it is quite interesting but if you choose to complete every quest like me, you will level to quickly. For example my paladin/fighter is lvl 17 in the 3rd act. All in all a good game but much room for improvement
