Summary: was great now good (soon decency will be the high standard)
Review: Trend Micro - PC Cillin - Internet Security
Symantec - Norton - Internet Security
McAfee - Internet Security
notice something? they all sing the same song...but none of them are really all that pretty.

[for all major AV personal products]

1st: previous versions WERE by far my favorite AV software, and yes the core routines probably did evolve to include heuristic scanning techniques blah-blah-fukn-blah...but they all 3 suck...

and the integrated firewalls...no...I'm not trusting those

firewall: obviously with a focuses on viruses/trojans/worms, the firewall is going to be somewhat inferior, and it is...though ZA sucks for features, it is easy to use and effective...Kerio has pretty good features and effective...Black Ice is good...but what the hell? for any firewall to be good, the user has to have half a ph|234k!/\/9 clue and set up some good rules-period.

on the other hand, the firewall seems effective at what it is focused on doing...monitoring and blocking attacks from trojnz/virii/wrms...but has little else to boast...of course if you're serious about firewalling you'll get at least one hardware firewall other than your router, then set up at least one GOOD software firewall...

bottome line all three major AV products have gone straight to hell with their "Internet Security" magical "you're safe button" piece de merde...pince de merde...

2nd: what the phUkc are 'they' thinking? These pretty new versios, aka GUI "enhancements", are ruining good product simply because they aren't "enhancements"...in newer versions of most [***oxymorn***]oxymoron: "good software," programmers and designers ruin (or just never fix) the basic needs of a program
a program must be:
-unambiguous (if I can't phr3@king [stand to] use the program, then there's a mF problem.)
-have features, not just bells and whistles, but gongs and kettle drums...
-gui almost always must have basic functions of scrolling, etc...basically, in gamer-speak, a program needs HANDLING

Most of these have disappeared from AV products in the last 4 years or so...maybe even more...

PC-Cillin IS04 is okay, definitely worth using as AV only...but someone needs to seriously look at how easy it is to overintegrate, restrict, and pretty much ruin a good program just so a newer version can "look newer"...

the basic run-down

McAfee - 5 - as much as I hate to admit it...at the moment it seems she wins the prize. Less bloated than its sister software, it's a halfway safe bet, and hey, M makes a good uninstaller and lots of other fairly good software...

Trend Micro (PC Cillin) - 4 - still good, but not a verion to convert on...if I were the Pope I wouldn't pay a visit to this temple yet...Thank you Mario, but our Little Lame Princess is stuck in the next version...

Symantec (Norton) - 3 - good support, okay product...leaves a bitter taste in my mouth being the hardest to remove, in fact, harder than most of the malicious code it wipes out!

Summary: PC World magazine is right!
Review: I recently just picked up the latest issue of PC World magazine and it convinced me to switch from Norton. I figured that all of the positive reviews on this product from amazon and also PC WOrld magazine gave me the green light for the switch.

First I must say that the majority of amazon reviewers are correct that this product is simply the best. I just had to gain the courage to move from something I knew but did not like (Norton) to something new that MOST people agree is a better product. I think the people who give this product a poor rating have some type of hidden agenda. Based upon my few days of using this product their negative reviews do not even make sense. How can NUMEROUS of reviewers and PC World magazine be wrong??? Well my friends they are not!

1. Firewall is very user friendly, just as PC World magazine stated. Just click enable and the type of connection and it is flawless. No problems with sending/receiving emails. I even played Medal of Honor online with no connection issues. More importantly, the firewall appears to be top notch based on a few websites I went to that can test your firewall, this further confirmed what I read in PC World magazine.

2. Antivirus properties are simply astounding. PC World also stated this, but I was convinced further when I uninstalled Norton and installed this and it immediately detected a virus that Norton was apparently not picking up. No wonder why computer appears to run quicker now. Although I have been told by other PC-Cillin users that this is possibly because of the fact that PC-Cillin is not a memory hog like Norton. Updates for viruses seem to come on almost a daily basis, thus very happy so far.

3. I guess their support is better than Norton based upon numerous reviews here. I personally have not even had to call them becuase my install was flawless.

4. From what I read in PC World magazine the spyware scanning is somewhat lacking, but I already am using Webroot Spy Sweeper so this is not a big deal for me. I bought PC-Cillin for the award winning firewall and anti-virus properties.

I hope this helps everyone thinking about selecting a package like this. So far this has been the best software purchase I have made for my computer.

Summary: User friendly it's NOT
Review: Be suspicious of favorable ratings written for this product; you don't know who wrote them.

I purchased this after reading a favorable review in PC World magazine in their June 2004 issue. The reviewer gave it the highest rating of the software she tested. She said it was user friendly, which is important to me. But it's not at all user friendly. Instead, it expects the user to be a sort of programmer who can write "exceptions" for its firewall. If you don't know the right port settings or IP addresses, etc., you can't write an exception, even if you figure out that you need to write one. They sure don't give you a clue.

This will disable any incoming or outgoing email and not give you a clue about why. It's so bad, you can't even contact tech support about it, not by email, not through their Web site. I can't even be sure this review won't be blocked even though I disabled their firewall.

I'm telling the truth. I don't believe the favorable reviews I read here. You can if you want; you'll see.

Summary: Where's the support?
Review: After reading the reviews here and returning McAfee Internet Security Suite 6.0, I installed the trial version of PC-cillin. The software picked up a few things that McAfee hadn't, and it's scanning is faster than McAfee. I also like how it marks emails with "spam:" in the subject line when it suspects it of being spam. A few of the newsletters I subscribe to were marked as spam, but it mostly did a good job of marking them so that I can filter them into a separate folder. The interface is easy to use and navigate. It doesn't matter to me how fancy a UI is; I just want it to work and work easily so that I don't have to consult the manual whenever I want to change a setting.

However, I was concerned that emails with suspicious files were allowed through. I checked the box for the program to check compressed files (like .zip files), but those were allowed through when they were obviously viruses. It also allowed .scr, .vbs, .com, and .cpl files through, and I had to manually delete the files.

I wanted to ask the company before I bought the software why these files were allowed through and not deleted like other viruses were. I emailed Trend Micro using the support form on their website, and received an email that I would get a response the next day. I got a failure email that day that my email didn't go through, even though I received the email with links to the FAQ while I waited for my response.

I just used the form on their website again to ask the same question about the product to get some assurance before I purchase the product. (...).

Norton allowed spyware onto my machine, and I'm still on the lookout for an effective solution.

Edit: After a couple more emails to their support(...)I found out that their software doesn't have the feature of finding all of the viruses making their way through your email. Today, I deleted .scr and .vbs files from my email. I don't understand how they can call the product "Internet Security" when this simple feature isn't included.

Summary: Replaced Norton, so far so good
Review: Much improved over Norton. Very easy to install and the user interface was spectacular. The firewall appears to be very effective, after I ran several tests. The anti-virus properties of this software are top notch. I am contantly getting updates from Trend Micro on new worms, viruses, and trojans. You can use a manual update or an automatic update. I guess what I like most about this software is how easy everything is layed out and the install process seemed way to easy. My computer also seemed to speed up a bit after giving Norton the axe and installing PC-Cillin. Very Very Happy with this product. From what I hear this product is getting rave reviews from magazines and computer nerds. No regrets here!

Summary: dangerous software
Review: This thing first caused my Compaq laptop to run extremely slowly, then caused it to crash, losing all data. Repeated e-mails to the company when it was acting strangely were ignored. Do NOT buy this software...it will cause more damage than it prevents! I tried to rate it 0 stars, but 1 was the least I was allowed to give it.

Summary: Good concept, good performance (so far).
Review: I purchased PC-cillin about a month ago after reading reviews on here and other sites. I can't agree more that the package is by far the best, and it really makes me wonder why other companies can't do the same? It doesn't seem too hard to bundle a decent firewall with anti-virus software, but so far only Trend has managed to do it this well. Paying for the name gets old and expensive, so goodbye Norton and McAfee!

Summary: Much better than Norton
Review: I have been a Norton Antivirus user for many years but after reading other reviews here I purchased PC-cillin a month ago. Lots of helpful features and security measures that you would have to pay extra for if using Norton but it's all included here. The Quick Start Guide answered all of my questions and help me to set it as most suited to my needs (I am not a pro at this stuff by any stretch). Takes care of spyware, too, which I had a problem with before. Awesome product!

Summary: INFERIOR WHEN COMPARED
Review: i bought pc-cillin based on amazon reviews and was happy until by chance i compared it to zone alarm pro on a 15 day free trial
zone alarm pro makes me feel more secure it let me know in detail of security violations attempts in small unobstrusive windows you can really see that the program is protecting your computer A LOT MORE than pc-cillin. Since i installed zone alarm
i notice there is less work for lavasoft a program designed to scan your computer for files and cookies that may dig into your personal info. in sum it is my assesment that zone alarm is better than pc-cillin perhaps much better specially the firewall

Summary: To "A Software user from New Mexico", give it a rest !
Review: I am glad to see that this product works well for you (and for many other users) but it would be nice if you don't respond to every negative review of this product with your own 5-star rebuttal. All you are doing is skewing the average rating and you come across as a shill for Trend Micro!
