Summary: been having it since christmas, and it's a fine machine
Review: Great DVD player for the price. It easily sets up and I have had no problems with freezing, flickering, etc. It even played a VERY scratched Demo dvd that was under my bed for a few months. Great buy, Recommended

Summary: Great value for money
Review: I bought this DVD player about half a month ago and has played more than 30 DVDs and music CDs since, and it played smoothly with superb video quality using its component video out. Even with the composite video, the screen is crisp and clear. Also tried some homemade VCDs, MP3s and CDRs and all of them played without any skipping. It didn't play my SVCDs though, and I have no DVD-R to test it.

The controls are user-friendly with the on-screen icons and simple remote control. I don't have to setup anything to get it work, really suits people like me who is not technically inclined.

It has all the features I need : simulated surround sound for a 2 speaker sound system that I have, enhanced dialogue, 5 different enhanced picture mode, and support for digital audio DTS/Dolby through its coaxial cable (though no optical output). Also supports Dolby Pro Logic.

One thing missing is the progressive scan. But at its price, I bet it is one of the best deals I ever had.

Review: I bought this player about a month back and I have yet had no problems with it. I work for a video store and have rented some of the most scratched up dvd's we had just to try and test the limitations of my dvd player and all of them have worked to perfection. For the value and the quality they don't come better

Summary: I can not recommend this player at all
Review: I bought this Toshiba SD-1800 about 6 months ago. It seemed to work fine...on DVDs only, we don't play CDs or other discs on it...About a month ago it started having the following symptoms: A DVD will play for a little bit starting out. Then the picture will get "shadowy", almost like a negative photo. Picture will then start and stop, and then finally stop alltogether. Happens on all DVDs. It seems to me this is some sort of temperature sensitve problem. Once the player warms up it starts having these problems. Based on this and after reading other reviews I would NOT RECOMMEND purchasing this player at all. And it brings into question the Toshiba name in terms of reliability and quality. Toshiba is not high on my list right now.

Summary: Great for New Grad on a Budget
Review: I got this player for a second TV and picked what I thought was a good brand so I wouldn't have any problems with it. After the first few times I used it, it started having trouble synchronizing the video signal. It behaved like the disk was damaged, even though the player was practically new and the same disk then played fine on another player. Toshiba claims there's a 1 year warranty, but after 90 days you're practically SOL, you have to pay shipping and a "handling fee" that together make replacing the player a more attractive choice. The replacement won't be a Toshiba...

Summary: Displeased
Review: I have this model, and today (precisely 1 year and 1 day after I purchased it), it stopped working. It's no longer under warranty and I'm now faced with purchasing another DVD player.

When it worked, it seemed like the remote was very slow to react. The sound was always too low, (lower than usual television) and the DVD player didn't interface with our VCR and TV easily. We had to change the cords each time we wanted to watch a DVD.

I wouldn't recommend this model to anyone.

Summary: Poor Reliability
Review: I purchased the earlier version in this series from Amazon about a year ago, and just recently, with less than 100 play-hours, it became erratic and died. Based on Amazon-listed reviews of this and other Toshiba products and my personal experiences, Toshiba's product and service quality seems to have gone way down in recent years. I cannot recommend this DVD player or the manufacturer.

Summary: Would not recommend this player.
Review: I purchased this DVD player a year ago. And the sound quality blew up. The sound now plays very low. I have to crank the stereo output or the TV volume in order to hear the DVD. I, too, am faced with purchasing a new DVD player. Not a satisfied customer.
