Summary: Pretty bad.
Review: I think this movie is supposed to be very scary but I can't say that it scared me at all. In fact the creepiest part was that morbid song the kids sing at the beginning: "One, Two, Freddy's coming for you" etc. The only reason I am giving it two stars is because it was a very good, different idea. The problem is that a horror movie is supposed to be just that: horrifying. I fell asleep during the movie, so obviously Freddy getting into my dreams was not a big issue. Maybe its a classic and I don't know what I am talking about, but I didn't like this movie much.

Review: I must say that this is by far the most...Incredible thing I have ever seen!!! A lot of people didn't approve of it(when I was 6 I didn't approve of it but more on that later.) Because this movie had a low body count.(Find out wich one did on www.freddyvsjason.com) But even thought the BC was low, the Blood Count was phenomenal. Remember the scene where whatsherface was wrapped in that sheet with blood all around it? what about when that dude got pulled through the bed?(I hate to admit it but to make a long story short I didn't sleep in my bed till the next time I saw it!) But I wont spoil the movie for you 'First Timers'. But If you are a first timer, watch this movie by yourself in the middle of the night, door locked, lights off, (And maybe some rubber pants and a blanket! If you think it's that scary) Good night, Sleep tight, Don't let Freddy Kreuger bite!

Summary: A True Terror Classic
Review: When the onslaught of 80's slasher films was in high gear, most ripping off "Halloween", and "Friday The 13th", there were hardly any original frights in the bunch. " A Nightmare On Ellm Street" came along and changed that. This movie, like "Psycho", and "Halloween" before it, and "Scream" after it, changed the world of horror. Good horror films can still happen. A bunch of kids are having nightmares of a ghastly looking killer with knives for fingers. Is he for real?. Will they die if they sleep?. That is such a great, ingenious premise. The movie has several heart pounding scenes that will leave you holding on to your seat. It's that good. Robert Englund, as Freddy Krueger, helped create one of the most memorable and incredible cinema villains of all time. The movie always has that eerie feel and pull of a horrible, sweat soaked nightmare. Wes Craven is truly a master. Heather Langenkamp, as the heroine Nancy, is one of the all time great Scream Queens. This movie is frightening. If you don't like it, you must be an alien. A brilliant, legendary classic. Don't fall asleep!.

Review: Wes Craven provided the final truly great film of his directorial career with A Nightmare On Elm St, initiating yet another successful horror franchise that deteriorated quickly but made Freddy Krueger a viable part of North American horror film iconography.
In this film, the teen residents of Elm St. are tormented by recurring nightmares of a razor fingered, fedora wearing maniac horribly scarred beyond recognition. When the teens begin to meet untimely and gruesome deaths, it would seem that their nightmares have become reality. Child molester and murderer Freddy Krueger has returned from the grave to wreak vengeance on the offspring of the vigilantes who burnt him alive many years previous.
The film benefits from a great cast of notable actors such as John Saxon (Black Christmas, Cannibal Apocalypse), Robert Englund (Eaten Alive, Tv's V mini-series) and a pre-stardom Johnny Depp (Donnie Brasco, Pirates of the Carribean). Heather Lagenkamp is also terrific as the main protagonist Nancy, who takes it upon herself to stop Krueger's murder spree. Lagenkamp would return in Nightmare on Elm Street 3 and Wes Craven's New Nightmare.
The film offers a surreal tone that consistently blurs the line between dream and reality making for a unique and terrifying experience, the viewer never knows what to expect, quite a departure from the usual predictable slasher film.
In Krueger, Craven and Englund have fashioned a completely hideous and unforgettable villain. Far removed from the ridiculous caricature that Krueger would later evolve into in the many sequels that followed.
The film will also please gore fans as a plethora of gruesome effects are employed that far surpass those in either Halloween or Friday The 13th. The murders are very imaginatively orchestrated and original.
A Nightmare on Elm St. is a fast paced and very effective horror film that deserves to be seen. Too bad the myriad sequels failed to live up to the promise of this first outing. After this Craven would move on to more mainstream material like the mega-failure Deadly Friend and the hugely successful teen horror parody Scream.

An Ohio Teenager, Tina Gray suffers from horrible nightmares. Ever night in her dreams she's chased inside a maze-like boiler room by a man that lurks in the shadows. With his funny hat, red and green sweater, and razor-fingers he scares Tina out of her wits.

Tina soon suspects that her friends Nancy, Glen, and her boyfriend Rod may all have the nightmares she does, it becomes a definite when a description of Tinas' dream sparks a memory of Nancys' dream that she had the night before, in which a creepy guy also chased her around a boiler room. Not believing these nightmares are ordinary, Tina trys to convince her friends that she may be in danger. Her friends just think they're ordinary nightmares, until one night Tina's brutally murdered in her sleep.
Her distraught friend Nancy Thompson begins to believe that her and her friends' nightmares are a matter of life and death. For if they die in thier dreams, they die for real. Nancy tracks the killer right to the source. A man named Freddy Krueger who once had a history with the town of Springwood.
After many sleepless nights, attempts to prove to her parents that these nightmares are more then they put them out to be, and murders of her friends, Nancy must find a way to put a stop to this Dream-Stalkers' evil ways...

This movie gave birth to one of the biggest horror icons ever, Freddy Krueger, a killer that spawned 6 more sequels. Some good, some bad.
It features a very young Johnny Depp who plays Glen (Nancys' boyfriend) in his first movie role ever. Heather Langenkamp was brilliant in her portrayl as the heroine Nancy. I loved it how they kept Freddys' face hidden in the shadows, it gave him much more of a mysterious and horrifying feel. Each nightmare the teens feel into had a dark and frightening feel to it, the music was deep and pulsating, adding to an even greater scare. Wes Craven gave Freddy an orginal territory for his attacks, sleep and dreams. Something we all need eventually, something we cannot live without and something we can't escape. Thus, proving that in the end, Freddy will always get you. If you're looking for a good scare, and a good film to watch on a dark night, I highly recommend this.
And remember, whatever you do, don't fall asleep...

Review: Few films have made their mark on the horror film genre like the movie "A Nightmare On Elm Street" by Wes Craven. Undoubtedly, Craven's best film, "A Nightmare On Elm Street" explores the realm of the unknown in sleep, sleep deprivation and most importantly nightmares. Wes Craven's masterpiece featuring that evil nightmarish fiend named Freddy Krueger delivers a genuine and an original horror to the audience and is in my opinion one of the greatest horror movies of all-time.

The movie starts out with a young girl having a nightmare, but the audience discovers that this is no ordianry nightmare when Tina's nightgown has been shredded during her sleep. Hence, the plot is set in motion and centers on the idea that if you fall asleep as a teenaged kid on Elm street, you risk not waking up and falling dead at the sharp hand of Freddy Krueger!

The audience also discovers that all of the teenaged kids on Elm street are having this very same nightmare which makes the movie that much more creepy and the audience is then able to make the jump into the supernatural and paranormal, that horrorfying unknown realm that instills fear in all of us.

Craven's film moves from this basic premise of "don't fall asleep or else" to a gruesome murder of one of teens on Elm street that sets an example of what happens if you do fall asleep. Craven brings the horror home to the audience with the violent and ghastly death of the young 16 year old girl. Interestingly enough, upon a first viewing, the audience could almost assume that Tina is the main character in the movie, but the audience discovers this is not the case and that sets for a rather brilliant change of focus.

The movie continues with the theme centering on nightmares and the "danger" associated with sleep. The main character named Nancy, played by Heather Langenkamp, becomes aware of the dangers of sleep on Elm street...the trouble of course is that no one believes her and why should anyone believe such an incredible story, but as the death toll mounts in the most gruesome of fashions, it becomes clear that something very evil and very bizarre is happening on Elm street.

"A Nightmare On Elm Street" is a brilliant and unique horror film that is sure to evoke terror in the audience. The movie attacks sleep which is has historically been a place of rest, sanction, healing and renewal. As the old saying goes, "the best thing to do with a bad day is to end it", but what if you couldn't do that?? Craven's masterpiece asks the question, what if sleep were taken away from you? What would you do to escape the madness of reality? Craven does a terrific job of exploring this very idea.

Freddy Krueger is a new sort of villain in that he is most definitely not of the mold of a Michael Myers or Jason Voorhees, but the cruelty and evil nature of Krueger is still only too apparent in the way he toys with his victims by torchering them with incessant attempts to evoke horror in his victims before their violent demise.

Along with Michael Myers and Jason Voorhees, Freddy Krueger is one of the most notorious villains in all of horror film history. I highly recommend this flick for all horror movie fanatics and it is definitely a must own. Also, you should check out the sequels up to part 3 in my opinion. This movie is a strong 4 STAR horror flick and it seems to really appeal to teenagers as it does focus on the adolescents on Elm street, but any horror fan will enjoy this film. The ending is a little weak in my opinion, but this movie is still quite effective. While not as strong as Halloween, "A Nightmare On Elm Street" is still one of the best horror movies of all-time and demands its place side by side with the elite horror movie DVDs on my DVD shelf.

Review: I saw this as a young kid on vhs and I had nightmares of Freddy from age 6-12. then I watched it numerous times on tv at age 13, and up. then I saw it 4 times on vhs for rent with my aunt. then bought it on dvd less then a year ago. every time I watch it. I see that terrifying, hilarious, shocking, truly horrific movie I came to see when I was younger. it scared me when I was 6. and it scares me now at age 20. it will continue to scare me til the day I die. there's just something sick and twisted about the Boogeyman named Freddy.
