Summary: Who needs the Wizard of Oz when you've got the Wiz!
Review: I love this movie (except Diana Ross)! The music is great. I love Michael singing the "Crow Anthem" You Can't Win & Evilene's Don't Nobody Bring Me No Bad News. But the ultimate is Can You Feel A Brand New Day. This is uplifting and the dance number is excellent! This is one of my all time favorite movies. The Wizard of Oz is a classic and I still like it, but this movie has a whole different flavor that I love! This is one to have permanently in your video collection.

Summary: Wish I was there!
Review: I have enjoyed this movie ever since I saw it one Saturday afternoon as a Child of 8. I loved the music and dancing. I'll admit I did get a little bored with the over-abundance of singing towards the end, but, hey, there were so many stars in the movie! It HAD to showcase all of their abilities! I would reccommend this movie to anyone who loves musicals and who needs a shot of "ease" in their system. It's a great look back on the music of yesteryear.

Summary: Can you feel a Brand New day?
Review: I did, the very first time I saw this movie. It was uplifting, entertaining and full of great fun. Now that I am an adult, watching the movie is like restoring those old childhood feelings. (wanting those dazzling silver slippers, wishing I could visit the Emerald City, wanting all of Dorothy's friends to be mine as well.) I agree that Diana's portrayal was a bit out of character. Even as a child, she seemed a bit too old. It's important here to look past the age and the somewhat sluggish plot to all of the excitement and spectacle. That is what makes the movie great. We have to remember that all movies don't have to be introspective or make some phenomenal impact upon our society. They can be, just what they are supposed to be, pure entertainment.

Summary: My Favorite Musical Ever!
Review: The Wiz has been billed as a remake of The Wizard of Oz but that shouldn't be your reason for seeing it. This movie is an urban rendition for those who couldn't identify with the original, farmgirl Dorothy. The music is more expressive and the dancing is more exciting. The characters are much more entertaining. Everyone will not like The Wiz but it was not made for everyone. So put aside your preconceived notions and dance along.

Summary: 13 year old hates movie
Review: I am a Wizard of Oz fanatic. This might have been good if they stuck to the play, "The Wiz", but instead, they decided to RUIN it. Oz is turned into New York and ruins the story. This movie is awful. Plain and simple

Summary: Spectacular production which stands on its own
Review: This was not a remake of the original, rather a fresh approach which was spectacular. I thought the energy displayed by the dancers and the innovation in set design made the movie. Diana Ross was too old as Dorothy, but the rest of the cast was perfect. "Everybody Rejoice" was a phenomenol number which brought me such joy!

Summary: one of my top 3 movies of all time and with good reason
Review: the wiz is a movie that grabbed my heart many years ago and hasn't let go yet. the music and characters blended together the way a musical should. my favorite scene is still the Brand New Day one. it's that kind of song that you can't help dancing to. i have the soundtrack and owned the album as a child. not many movies have that kind of effect through childhood but the wiz did and it will entertain generations to come just as it did me. it's not trying to be the wizard of oz. it's just that THE WIZ! and i LOVE IT!

Summary: A disaster
Review: I love THE WIZARD OF OZ. I love the book, and I especially love the 1939 movie version. I even love the less-popular 1985 sequal RETURN TO OZ. Maybe that's why this film just doesn't deliver.

The film begins on the wrong note by casting Diana Ross as Dorthy. Not only is she way to old for the role, but her relaxed style of singing doesn't match the material. She just doesn't seem to be able to hold the picture together.

Jackson, on the other hand, is well casted as the Scarecrow. It's just a shame the rest of the cast isn't as memorable. Everyone just seems to be going through the motions with out bringing any emtion or life to their characters. The whole production just plods along until the disapointing finale, with Prior looking anemic as the Wiz.

Yeah, the production values are good, but there's no magic or joy. You and your family would be much better off following the old yellow brick road of the 1939 masterpiece.
