Summary: you won't forget this one
Review: This movie is definitely one that will stay in your head for awhile after you watch it. A movie that has the subject of snuff, is a movie well worth watching. With a subject that interesting, how could the movie be bad?

Summary: Do not blame the bearer of bad news.
Review: I went into 8MM preparing to hate it, and came out rather rattled and more than a little thoughtful.

For many people this is a distateful film because it chooses to deal frankly and directly with a very distasteful subject -- underground porn. Fine. But if there is ugliness in the world, don't blame the bearer of bad news. This is a smart, carefully-assembled movie that takes the time to care about its characters instead of simply dumping them into a stock situation. And while snuff movies themselves are still largely in the realm of urban myth -- show me one and THEN I'll believe you -- the human capacity for evil isn't.

Nicholas Cage is in good form here. This isn't the best movie of his career, or even the best performance, but he does a fine job of playing a man who is simply stuck in a situation that demands far more of him than he can give. And as for the people he comes up against -- well, let's just say they are walking ads for the banality of evil. Banal in the sense that it takes less effort than you think to be truly evil; it takes an absence of a great many other things, instead.

This was a better movie than most people made it out to be. Give it a fair shot.

Summary: Perverted Sick Movie
Review: This movie shocked me with the amount of perversion. I am truely disappointed that Cage would be in a movie this .... I don't mind sex or murder. But the sex for murder is just sick. I pray that some crazy out there doesn't get any ideas!!!!

Summary: The critics were correct, for once.
Review: I'm not exactly the most discriminating movie goer. I watch -- and enjoy -- a lot of bad movies. That being said, 8mm is the only movie I've seen in the last two years that I felt was a complete waste of time and money.

Nicolas Cage's performance is weak, the plot is unbearable, and the conclusion is predictable. The result is an unpleasant, mean-spirited movie that you won't want to watch all the way through.

Avoid this movie. It's not even worth a rental.

Summary: Joel Schumacher returns to roots
Review: Joel returns to making dark films which is what he does best. Flatliners was a minor hit in the 80's, but since then he has done those stupid Batman movies. Batman Forever was actually ok, but Batman and Robin was unforgivable. I thought he had lost the gritty realism he once had in exchange for rubber but shots. He has made a comeback with 8mm. It is the story of a P.I. (Nick Cage) that is hired to discover the validity of an 8mm film which depicts the death of a young girl. He descends into the disgusting underworld of porn, and finds more than he bargained for. Still, I couldn't help but think that if only they had called the police....

Summary: Not bad, not great
Review: First, let me say that I think Cage can't act, and I have yet to see a film in which he impresses me. 8MM is no exception. The film itself, ignoring Cage, is not bad, and although it has some interesting moments, it tries too hard to be scary. It isn't scary. It does offer a mystery, mostly surrounding the sexual underworld (if one exists...), but there is very little heart-thumping suspense. I can't say I enjoyed it, but I can't say I hated it. Of course, I hated Cage's acting (or overacting).

Summary: Disturbing Masterpiece
Review: Andrew Kevin Walker (Writer of Se7en) does it again. When you think it can't get more dark and disturbing than Se7en it does. An interesting look in the dark world of pornography and "snuff" films as P.I. Tom Wells (Cage) investigates the murder of a young missing girl. The writing carries this film as it is well thought out and articulated. This movie is not for the weak or squimish, but a must see.

Summary: What has happened to Nicholas Cage?
Review: First Snake Eyes and now this. It is not as horrible as the critics made it out to be, but is not up to the standard of many of his old movies. Watch Face Off, The Rock, Leaving Las Vegas, and Raising Arizona instead.

Summary: definitely not up to snuff
Review: A sick and disturbing film that actually is slow in places. I considered turning it off several times, but stuck it out to the anticlimatic end. My wife didn't watch it, but hearing the soundtrack from the next room upset her.

Summary: Like it more and more
Review: This is a thought provoking film. It talks about the worst thing that human being can do. But I am really moved by a line at the end. 'You and I are probably the only people who really cares about Mary Ann.' When this movie comes out, people just yelled how dirty and sick it was. But, does anyone of you feel sorry for the poor girl? At least her part is really real and Amy Morton is acting great as the girl's mother. This film tell us to care more about people around us. It's a depressing film but at the end, when Nicolas Cage smiles and release his cruching brow (he never stop doing that throughout the movie, I am not sure if anyone realize that). After watching this movie for more than 4 times, you realized that you have already been changed by the 'devil'. You get used to some of those dirty and violent scenes. However, than you can see more clearly how great Nicolas Cage's acting is. Especially the second half of the movie. He can also convey emotions with only a little muscle move on his face. You will like this movie if you are a Cage fan or you really agrees with the plot and can feel Tom Welles' pain. You will feel better if you neglect the dirty scenes after watching quite a number of times.
