Summary: Who gets the credit?
Review: All of you cheering Generous Electric ought to look at the label on your machine. You'll find that although the front says GE, the back is european Thomson Consumer Electronics who bought the GE and RCA television businesses in 1985. They merely licensed the GE name as part of the sale for years.

Summary: can't record cable channels > 99
Review: Bought the VCR because it was the lowest-priced one I could find that also had 4 heads, stereo, and commercial skip. Found it easy to set up and program (although it didn't auto-clock set the 1st time I tried.) However, much to my surprise, I found it impossible to record channels over 99, even though the manual shows an example with channnel 104, and the VCR is supposed to be 181-channel compatible. There's no contact # for Thonson, so I called Amazon.com,(who I bought it from--highly recommended), and they reached Thomson, who told them that the VCR couldn't record 3-digit channels. I'm debating whether or not to keep it because of that--I'm impressed with it otherwise, particularly for the price (good recording quality, playback, and stereo, easy to use, and there IS a tape counter--hit the "INFO" button to display it on the screen.) The main problem is the 3-digit channel bug--my current cable system doesn't go over channel 99, but some do, and it would be a BIG disadvantage.

Summary: You get what you pay for
Review: Don't be fooled by the 4-head hype of this unit. If you are concerned about decent RECORDING quality, you *won't* like this VCR. Take my word for it. I had to send it back because the recording quality was so cheap looking. Programs recorded in the "high quality" SP mode looked like they were recorded on a 2-head machine in SLP (EP) mode then copied from another tape. I was very disappointed. True, the unit has all the bells and whistles you could possibly want, (including a clock on the front panel -- the other reviewer here probably didn't know how to set it); and commercial advance/movie advance at this price are unheard of. It *is* a very quiet unit, and moves from play to rewind to forward very smoothly. Playback quality of pre-recorded tapes is acceptable. If that's all you use it for, then this is a good extra unit to keep the kids or the live-in mother-in-law occupied. However, if you record movies or soaps, or whatever, you will be disappointed in the results. The Sharp unit that's also sold here has almost none of the features of the GE (except the universal remote), and is not hi-fi/stereo, but the recording quality of the Sharp is superior (though still not as good as the Panasonics or Toshibas).

Summary: WONDERFUL VCR
Review: Easy to set up, great price. Once you turn it on, it takes you through the set up process which makes it easy to use. I set everything up without even opening the instructions. If you need a VCR at a great price, buy this.

Summary: 90 dollar doorstop
Review: from day one I had problems with this vcr. First the machine would refuse to take in tapes without it ejecting it repeatedly and making grinding noises. Not a good sign. I stuck with it, after all I had brought it and would give it another chance, maybe I was pushing too hard or too softly on the tape. Then I noticed that the machine was fraying the tapes, this happened infrequently so I thought that it was my fault. Then the vcr began eating tapes. After the second tape was destroyed I gave up on it. Maybe my vcr was a fluke though it appeared to have been opened and used before I received it.

Summary: can't record cable channels > 99
Review: Has lots of excellent features for a 90-dollar VCR. In addition to basic VCR functions, there is Commercial Advance and Movie Advance. The VCR's functions, settings, and programming are easily accessible in the on-screen menus. The picture and sound are good. It's low price is more evident in that tape insertion and rewinding are not as "smooth" as higher-end models.

Summary: Great VCR at a Great Price!
Review: I have had this unit for two weeks. The picture playback quality on pre-recorded tapes is great. When hooked up to a surround sound system, the audio playback is first rate. The movie/commercial advance feature is really handy and unheard of on a unit costing less than $90. The recording quality and playback is also very good. I recorded the millenium celebrations on ABC 2000, and the playback of the Paris and London midnights was very impressive. I highly recommend this VCR to those who want good quality at a very affordable price.

Summary: A lot of VCR for little money.
Review: I have owned many VCR's in the past all in different price ranges but I am impressed with how much this unit has to offer for so little. Sets up easy, looks and works great.
