Summary: This one is a "No-Brainer"! An inexpensive MUST BUY!!
Review: I bought this printer for basic home use because it was highly rated by PC Magazine. A lot of internet research was performed as well (about 2 weeks worth). I debated between the Canon i850 and the i550...The only discernable difference between the two was print speed. This was confirmed on Canon's website. I am very impressed with its photo printing. Since we went all digital photography at our house, my wife kept complaining about not being able to get a good quality print. PROBLEM SOLVED!! It prints a beautiful, 4x6 borderless photo in no time at all! It would take a magnifying glass to distinguish it from a professionally developed photo. 4x6 glossy photo paper is only 15-20 cents a sheet. The individual tanks, and ink cost was the deciding factor as well. The cost of the Canon ink replacements vs. the other leading brands is a no-brainer. I had my last Canon for 4 years before I decided to upgrade to the newer technology. Bottom line - great printer, great photos, great price.

PS-The text printed by the i550 is laser quality, just in case you need to actually use it as a "regular" printer:)

Summary: Bye Bye ... Photo Developing!!!
Review: With a baby on the way I wanted a more convient way to take pictures and share multiple copies of them with the family. I bought a 4 megapixal camera and needed a great printer to make hard copies. This printer makes photo lab quality 4x6" photos in under a minute. I see no difference between ones taken with a 35mm and developed at a store then the ones I printed out. It is much quieter then my previous Canon BJ-4300 and light years ahead in quality. The individual tanks are very cost effective too. The software included even made a low resolution digital print (about 20 kb) come out very nice at 4x6". You can see all your photos and send multiple copies to the printer. It also does regular printing of letters very quickly. Highly recommend!!

Summary: The only choice
Review: HP has let quality seriously slip, and Epson thinks the printer future is with cameras and not computers. So the perennial also-ran, Canon, has stepped in with this worthy successor to the S750.

The i550 is no great breakthrough product. Inkjet printers have become settled commodity items. And they are becoming very cheap. So the question is whether quality has suffered. For the i550, the answer is no. The ink comes in individual tanks for economy and has been reformulated so as not to fade. Speed is comparable to older Canon models and is faster in every mode than most Epsons and HPs. It is interesting that draft mode shows little degradation from standard mode for text and graphics but is noticably faster still and will be the setting of choice for all internal documents. But neither will you be ashamed to send anyhting you print in standard mode out into the world. The type seems crisp and black and the colors are true, at least to my eye.

This is not a photo printer, but to I think it produces pictures as good as any printer(assuming the right paper -- I used the samples from Canon), though real purists may want to invest more for a real photo printer if that is your main use. This is an office printer, and though it has camera-type software, it has no slots for memory sticks. Overall, it's a good all-around unit at [money] and I don't miss my old Epson a bit.

Summary: Good and quiet
Review: Some plusses (in addition to all the stellar reviews here): it has an auto on and off feature (which you can adjust -- similar to a monitor's "sleep"); separate ink tanks for Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black -- if you use a lot of blue, all you need to replace is the Cyan cartridge; it's very quiet for an inkjet printer; when it's not in use, all the trays, intake and output, can be closed, which helps keep dust out; and if you have an older system, there's a parallel port connection in addition to the USB/USB2.0 port.

Complaints -- NO CABLES ARE INCLUDED; slightly dated look (it's more beige than the gray in the picture here); it was a bit confusing installing the driver in XP -- note: if you want to update it to the latest driver from the Canon Web site, you have to uninstall the driver that comes on the CD first; and trays, covers, and ink holders have a flimsy feel to them.

Summary: I liked thw Canon i550 buble jet printer so much...
Review: I went out and brought a new Canon S330 digital camera to co-ordinate my pictures with the new intuitive software that the printer provides for digital pictures taken with a Canon digital camera. Truthfully, my old Canon Bubblejet had given up the ghost after 6 yrs. of hard work. I chose this printer because it does everything: text, and, great digital photographs.

The i550 printer supports Exif 2.2 (Exchangeable Image Format File), a new worldwide standard for higher quality digital photos, and features exclusive Canon Easy-PhotoPrint software that delivers the potential of Exif Print. The quality is amazing with an ultra-high resolution of up to 4800 x 1200 color dpi. Simple-to-use Easy-PhotoPrint analyzes the recorded data then automatically adjusts printer driver settings for optimum image processing for photos that look like what you intended them to look like.

As for those ink cartriges that cost so much. Canon has replaced them with an intelligent ink management system for ease-of-use and lower printing costs. I have already printed out six 8"x11"and several 4"x6" photos, and dozen of text pages, and still have have almost full tanks. I would use Canon's glossy paper for the ultimate photos for clarity and color. There is a big difference in the paper you use for printing out photographs. Now, I am waiting for my new Canon S330 digital camera to arrive from 'Buy/Dig'. I can hardly wait to see the spectacular results. I heartily recommend the new Canon i550 Bubble Jet Printer for business, pleasure and photography.

Summary: 100% satisfied
Review: I have yet to encounter a negative aspect in this printer. The price is exceptional. I bought it a few months ago when the price was even a tad higher, and it still made financial sense.

Physically, the printer is beautiful. It is rather small - much smaller than many printers from other brands with equivalent resolution. The paper trays (both blank paper and output) compactly fold into the body of the printer. This reduces dust accumulation inside the printer parts. The Canon i550 has two cables - a power cord, and a cord to connect it to your computer (either parallel or USB). I use the USB cable, which is much smaller and compact than a parallel cable. The buttons on the printer are completely self-explanatory and installation of the printer (for a Windows XP machine) was hassle-free. I have four printers installed on my computer (two at home, and two at work), and none of them, including the Canon i550, have problems with each other.

The printing quality is precisely what you'd expect from a 4,800 x 1,200 dpi printer. I use the draft mode for quick printing, and it looks great. I use the highest resolution for photos and important documents, and it also looks great! The printer warms up relatively quickly (about 1-1.5 minutes), and prints very quietly and quickly. The borderless printing available is great for printing pictures and very easy to use. I have used this printer to print 4X6 jpeg photo files on glossy photo paper, and they look just like real pictures.

I have also used semi-glossy and matte 8.5x11 paper with highest resolution settings to print posters and flyers, and the products looked very impressive. I suggest you use genuine Canon paper (glossy, semi-glossy, or matte) for high-resolution projects - your Canon i550 won't have any problems with it, and the quality of the paper is excellent.

Your printer will come with "Easy-PhotoPrint" software, which will make your life very easy. Using this program you can select one or more jpegs to be printed, the kind of paper you're using by size (4X6, letter-size, etc.) and quality, and the layout of your pictures. How many times have you wanted to fit two jpegs on one sheet of photopaper and have had to feed the sheet into the printer twice? No more! This program is also aware of borderless printing capability of the Canon i550, so you won't waste any space.

In the near future I plan to purchase Canon transparencies and use my i550 to make overheads for a presentation. I am sure they will look spectacular! Overall, a great buy and strongly recommended.

Summary: Best Printer for the Price!
Review: Two words: Buy it! This printer is one of the best in its class. It gives great print quality, text and photos, and is faster than most in its price range. I also love the design of this machine. The paper tray and holder both fold neatly inside the printer to conserve desk space and make it easy to transport. As in most Canon printers, the ink tanks are separate which makes changing colors easy, convenient, and affordable. It's also very simple to use. Within ten minutes you'll be printing your favorite pictures with surprising results.

There's not much else to say about this printer. I highly recommend it for home use and casual photography.

Summary: Great printer

Summary: I Love it
Review: It is so great! I can change one ink color at a time and if you get generic ink wells it makes it so cheap to use. It has worked well for my family and I.The pictures come out great considering it is not an exspensive printer.

Summary: Ready for second service in just over a year
Review: Purchased this printer just over one year ago. One printer head already had to be replaced, and this printer doesn't even get daily use - certainly not heavy use. Both the yellow and red heads have ceased printing altogether - great if you live in a black and blue world. Not very pleased at all with this printer. I purchased this based on all of the other reviews - maybe I got the one lemon.
