Summary: SUPERB!
Review: If all your looking for is a printer that just PRINTS, this is it! not any special features, but that leaves room for quality and SPEED!! VERY FAST, and images are EXCELLENT! And the best part is you can pick up a FULL SET (black, blue, red, and yellow) of cartridges [for a modest price]The price/performace/value CAN NOT BE BEAT! Canon is king of inkjets!

Summary: What a hassle!
Review: I too bought the i550 based on the raving reviews and had nothing but trouble.
When we first installed the printer it printed a beautiful 4x6 picture on the free sample paper. After that it never worked again! I uninstalled, reinstalled, called tech support and got nothing but problems for 2 weeks. In the end the computer illiterate "tech support" at canon told me I had a bad print head and needed to go to a local area provider to have it replaced. I packed it back up in the box and sent it back to amazon.

Summary: Excellent Printer
Review: Having been through several HP and Lexmark printers, all models
very noisy, I was pleasantly surprised by how exceptionally
quiet this Canon printer was. It works well with my Linksys
printserver, and allows all 3 of my home office computers to
print with no extra cables (the printer cable goes to my printserver,
which is basically an ethernet hub with a printer port).
5x7 photos are really awesome; I touched up the eye color of
a picture of my daughter (a little extra green) and people oohh'd
and awww'd over how pretty her eyes were....they had no idea it
came off my printer.

Summary: 550 good -- 850 better
Review: I boght the 550 because i read a review here on amazon.com saying that the 550 has the same technology as the 850. That the only difference was the the 550 was slower. Well, after buying it and printing with it, the other difference is that the 850 has a 2 picaliter droplet, and the 550 has a 5 picaliter droplet. So the technology is not the same. Don't get me wrong, the 550 does a good job printing. and the detail is great. But it's better on the 850.

How did I find out the size of the picaliter in the 550? I called cannon, when I couldn't find it in the specs. But you can totally tell when you print. This is good buy...

Summary: Don't Buy This Printer
Review: From the start, this printer would not print a single page until the print head cleaning program was run. Every single page you print requires another cleaning. Technical " services " offered me detailed instructions on how to run the clean program ( after I had run it at least 60 times ! ) After a " repair " by my local authorized service center, I was able to print 4 consecutive pages before I had to clean the heads again. Tech service now says the wrong part was replaced, and they'll send me another. The authorized service center had 3 more of this model on the counter for the same problem when I visited. Canon obviously has a design flaw they're not addressing yet. Don't buy it!

Summary: I'm sending mine back
Review: I thought this would be a great printer. Maybe most of them are, but after four days I'm sending mine back.

When it works right, it is a nice printer. The output looks crisp, colors are reasonably true, and the print speed is fine as well.

However, mine simply refuses to print black ink consistently. Clean the nozzles and it prints fine. Don't print anything for a few hours, and the problem returns. Clean the nozzles once more, and it's fine again.

I want to print, not spend all of my time performing maintenance on a printer. So I'm sending mine back, and I'll replace it with a brand other than Canon.

Summary: Terrific all purpose printer
Review: This printer does everything well, text, photos, and any mix. If you want GREAT photos, you have to use photo paper. I've used MS Office, Corel, and Adobe products without a single problem. Top quality 4 X 6 photos thought take about 2 minutes, 20 seconds to print using the slick Canon software that comes with the printer. On my 1400 Mhz Pentium 4, printing takes most of the machines resources so printing in background isn't a viable option.

Summary: Great Printer!
Review: We bought this printer last night, and had it figured out, along with the software, in less than an hour. It prints great photo's from our digital camera, they look like proffesional pics!
I searched for a long time for a printer, going over reviews for the lexmark, canon, and hp brands. I also looked into the multi machines. We decided to get them separate, since we could only afford to do one right now. I don't regret it at all. This is a great value!

Summary: Finally! A working printer!
Review: After owning 6 different printers in as many years, I was totally depressed to think about buying another. With 200+ printers to choose from under $200, I researched for a week and finally took the plunge! All I can say is, "WoW!". The installation was flawless, the bundled software is capable and fast. Formatting and printing is a breeze. The printer is so quiet, even in standard mode, that nobody knew I had it up and running before the photo came out in 1:05 minutes. For those folks who are totally overwhelmed by the choices out there, LOOK NO FARTHER! I'd rate this 6 stars if they'd let me.... As a foot note, I have a rather dusty environment and the Canon i550 has feed and paper path doors which can be closed when not in use, eliminating the need for a dust cover.

Summary: Not for fine text
Review: The only thing holding me back from five stars is the quality of printing when printing fine text. Your first example of this is when you print out the rebate form for the printer, the instructions are a bit hard to read. Otherwise, picture quality is too incredible. I can hardly believe an inkjet printer can do this. The speed in which it prints is also very nice. Its nice not to have all the bugs that those HP printers seem to aquire. Also, be careful not to touch anything you print for 20 seconds or it will smear. This is on all settings. I definetly would make this a must have if you need a printer.
