Summary: Pretec CompactFlash 56K modem
Review: I bought this modem about 3 weeks ago for my HP 548 Jornada Pocket PC and it works great...flawless. I know there are other reviews mentioning tricky connections and such; however, I have encountered absolutely zero problems. I would recommend this product to anyone, at least anyone with an HP 540 series (as that is what I have tested it on).

Summary: GREAT MODEM!
Review: I bought this modem for my Jornada 525 and it gets the job done pretty well. It was very easy to configure it even though I am a newbie in Pocket PC being a Palm user for years. One of the things I love is that you just plug it in and you are ready to go! No software to install! The only downside is that it does't have any light indicator when it is connecting. Not even the classic connecting sound can be heard ( and yes, I have the volume all the way up in my device, :P). Anyway, it is a fast well built modem with solid design at a great price.

Summary: Best modem for your pocket pc
Review: I bought this modem the same day that I bought my HP Jornada 548. When i got home I tried to go onto my internet connection. When I got on i was suprised to see how fas it actually was. It has great looks, great download and sign on speed, and its small and compact. One thing the bothers me is that it eats the Pocket PCs battery but that is just like all other modems for Pocket PCs. In the end this is a great add on for your Pocket PC. All Pocket PC users if you need or want to get on to the internet, check your mail do anything that a normal modem can do you can do it and much more with the Pretec Compact Flash Modem.

Summary: Needing tricks to connect
Review: I got the pretec modem for compaq aero 1550. It connected to my ISP then immediately disconnected, despite all settings being properly set, according to the user's manuals. This problem has been reported by other folks.

I had later figured out the necessary "tricks" to deal with tone-dialing-caused authentication failure, which probably caused the immediate disconnection after connection, and also set up the dialing options similiar to what we do with a compaq NT desktop dialing and finally made the connection work! I will only use the modem when i travel but it's kind of big in the size, causing me having to bring a carrying case of twice the size of the pocket PC. So, that's inconvenience.

My comments of Pretec compact modem:

1. Poor documents, not containing all necessary info to successfully work for different PCs and ISPs, even if you also get the configuration info down from the Pretec faq for pocket pc accessories.

2. Very poor technical support. I had found no help from them.

Summary: Sturdy, easy to use.
Review: I had no problem hooking this up to my Ipaq H3150.
Its sturdy, and easy to use.
I got it in case my desktop chrashes again, or I do an
upgrade,I don`t like being without E-mail etc. for a week
or more while my desktop is in the shop. Especially if I`m
in the middle of Ebay or other transactions I can browse the
web or do any e-mail I that I can do on my desktop. Its also
great for travel.

Summary: It works great and I love it!
Review: I have been waiting for Pocket PC for a loooooonnng time and it finally arrived. I got a Casio E-115 and it's beautiful. I sync up with Outlook on my Desktop on a daily basis to get an update of all my daily appointments, tasks, contact info. I bought a Pretec modem at a great price and it worked just fine on my Casio E-115. It took me about 15 min to get all my ISP settings done. The instruction is not bad and I set up my AT&T worldnet account just fine. Got my emails in the Inbox and I can browse around on the Internet. The letters are really tiny though. Wish there is a Zoom-in utility that I can magnify the screen display while browsing the net. I use the modem card to check emails mostly. Definitely will recommend to my friends.

Summary: Had to replace
Review: I ordered the Pre Tec modem along with a new Journada. Unfortunately it did not work as I could not get it to connect with phone line. I know that this happens once in a while and understand that a faulty modem can be sent out. I have ordered another to replace it and will review it's performance later. The real problem that I have is there is not support telephone number for a Pre Tec product owner to get help when a problem like this happens. I even went to Hewlet Packard as this is the only modem out there that I know of that supports the Journada. Their tech support did what I did and tried to find a support telephone number on the Pre tec web site with no luck. I find it surprising that Hewlet Packard would allow a fellow vendor of the only thing that works with their product ot allow this. It was very frustrating that Hewlet Packard did not even have an internal number to call.
