Rating: Summary: Great Storyline Review: During World War II there is a shortage of men to fill the slots of the baseball teams. Because of this women begin to get recuited and thus we have the storyline for this outstanding film.
I think Penny Marshall did a great job with this movie. Genna Davis, the basic star brought much realism as we watch a bunch of talented ladies battle for a place in sporting history.
Marshall makes it personal by giving us some great insight into the lives of these women and the challenges they faced to be part of the first Girls Professinal Baseball Team.
I was a little disappointed at the ending, but all in all I think this was a very good movie.

Rating: Summary: Review - "A League Of Their Own" Excellent Movie!!! Review: "A League of Their Own" (1992), directed by Penny Marshall, takes place during the World War II era. Since a lot of male baseball players were being drafted to the armed forces, an All American Girls Baseball League was formed to try to keep the prosperity of baseball alive in America. The two main characters Dottie Hinson (Geena Davis) and Kit Keller (Lori Petty) join up with a whole turnout of women including the flirtatious Mae Mordabito (Madonna) and the strong, bold Doris Murphy (Rosie O'Donnell), and experience life as a female athlete during the 1940's. Jimmy Dugan (Tom Hanks) is one of the male coaches hired to coach one of the all woman teams, and is one of the many that show transformation throughout the season. This movie is full of stereotypical ideas of what a female should be, but that is not to say that the movie promotes these ideas. Some examples could be shown through the uniforms that the women are forced to wear, which consists of a skirt! As stated in the movie, the women are to act "ladylike" and are sent to a beauty school, where they are taught "ladylike" manners and are given makeovers. We see in Dottie Hinson, whose husband Bob Hinson (Bill Pullman) is away at war, the outlook of women back then as she almost quits the league by the final game because Bob returns from the war and Dottie's aspirations are to start a family and be a housewife. Even in Jimmy Dugan, the coach barely cares at first about the team and states "girls can't play baseball", and how he doesn't have a team of ballplayers, but a "team of girls". We see a transformation however in him that shows his true love of the game, looking past what gender roles were considered back then. Although there are many more, one last example discussed here is Marla (Megan Cavanagh), who is a better hitter than most men, yet is almost not allowed in the league because she is considered "ugly". This movie was excellent. It shows how hard it was for women to be taken seriously outside of "housewife" labels that were bestowed upon them, yet it adds great humor throughout to make it a very entertaining, yet educational film!
Rating: Summary: Tom Hanks's Best Performance Review: "A League of Their Own" recounts the formation of a women's baseball league during World War II by major league baseball owners. The league was intended as a diversion for baseball fans while the greater part of major league players had either enlisted for the war or been drafted. The movie follows the exploits of one team in particular, the Rockford Peaches. The Peaches are managed by Jimmy Dugan (Tom Hanks), who is an ex-major leaguer who has boozed his way out of the game. Hanks's character is loosely based on real life Hall-of-Famer Jimmy Foxx. Not only do we see the Peaches play; but, we also see how a few of them are recruited. The Peaches are a typical Hollywood assemblage of misfit pieces like the reluctant star catcher Dottie Hinson (Geena Davis), her unruly kid sister Kit Keller (Lori Petty), the sexy heartbreaker Mae Mordabito (Madonna), the mouthy bulldog Doris Murphy (Rosie O'Donnell), and the emotional wreck Evelyn Gardner (Bitty Schram). However, while the characters may really be caricatures, they manage to fit together quite nicely and no one member of the team takes over the screen. One would expect some kind of a social statement to come out of a movie like this. If there is one, it is so subtle as not to be noticed. Perhaps the fact that no obvious statement is being made is a statement in and of itself. While "A League of Their Own" predated such professional women's sports leagues as the WNBA and the WUSA, contemporary audiences could be excused for wondering what all the fuss about a women's professional baseball league would be. Times have certainly changed since the 1940s. On top of this, "A League of Their Own" is also very entertaining. Tom Hanks gives what is, in my opinion, his best performance to date. The "there's no crying in baseball" scene is one of the best and most memorable of any movie ever. It's one of those movie moments that can make you laugh just from thinking about it. "A League of Their Own" is not the best baseball movie of all time. I would actually place it third.... However, the third best baseball movie is certainly better than most top movies of any other genre.
Rating: Summary: Excellent family entertainment (with OLDER kids) Review: . As the studios release more and more back catalog material, dating back to before there was a PG-13 rating, it's tough to find suitable movies for the under 13's. Our 9-yr old daughter has enjoyed watching this with us at least twice, and I have no doubt that we'll watch it frequently enough to justify owning rather than renting. Where we've been somewhat burned by forgetting how old pre-PG-13 PG movies could be, this is not at all a question for us. Madonna plays a character who is adventurous, but her quips (such as a tight dress whose disomfort won't be an issue because she's "not planning on wearing it that long") pass too quickly for them to register. But in no stretch is this just a movie for the pre-teens. The performance of Tom Hanks is absolutely terrific, and Geena Davis and Lori Petty make two very competitive sisters come to life. Jon Lovitz is hilarious as a scout, and Rosie O'Donnell is great as Madonna's comic foil. The writing is spot on in providing these actors turf to chew (who will ever forget "there's no crying in baseball!"?), and the story is very pleasant, and a little inspirational even. The only part I don't like (and others may disagree) is the modern sections at the beginning and the end which set the stage for reminiscing about the league. To me (ok, I'm a guy, crush a beer can on my forehead) the time during those sections feels very slow, and the actors (different actors from the bulk of the movie) seem stiff. Thankfully, though, Hollywood has changed names while retaining some of the negative traits of the characters. Tom Hanks' character is based on that of Jimmy Foxx, a tremendous hitter who hit over 500 home runs, but whose career was cut short by alcohol. That aspect is here, and it's strong, although they have changed Foxx's name to Dugan.
Rating: Summary: Good Script + Great Cast= A Great Afternoon at the Movies Review: A great take on baseball. The cast made more of the script than was really there. Jon Lovitz at his best. Madonna and Rosie made a great team together. Hanks and Davis? What can you say. Just goes to show that you don't need a great script, just a great cast. The greatest line.... I'ts supposed to be hard. If it wasn't hard everyone would do it. A movie for anytime!

Rating: Summary: A League of Their Own Review: A League of Their Own is a really good movie. It stars a girl named Dottie who used to be the catcher on a women's baseball team. She is constantly rivaling with her kid sister Kit over plays, calls, and much more. After a rough tryout, Dottie and Kit meet Dorris, May, Shirley, Betty, and many more. Tom Hanks stars as the manager, who befriends Dottie. This is a great movie for all who enjoy baseball.
Rating: Summary: Wonderful movie, a must see for anyone Review: A League of their own is a terrific film. With plenty of laughs, and heart. It is a tale about two sisters who get to play in the women 's baseball team during WW2. Penny Marshall does a good job with the action scenes, and the overrall light tone of the film. The real triumph of the movie is the perfect casting Geena Davis plays all star catcher Dottie Henssion to perfection. She's very enjoyable and her chemistry with Hanks is unbelieveble. Next Tom Hanks plays washed up player turned coach Jimmy Dugan. He's funny, and delivers the most famous line " there's no crying in baseball" wonderfully. Rosie O'donell plays the funny, talented player Dorris who's best friend is the infamous Mae played by Madona who does a good job in her usual typcast part. The standout { and suprise} of the cast is Lori Petty who plays the tough, and fiesty Kit Keller Dottie's younger sister. She's plays the part with sas and spunk and deserves more credit for the performance then she seemed to get. Also the two sisters chemisrty is also great, which is pivital to the running of the film. Overall this is a great film for everybody. Plus the DVD is packed with plenty of features for extra enjoyment. Thisis a MUST have DVD
Rating: Summary: A Good Baseball Movie! Review: A League of Their Own is an entertaining movie about a struggling team in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League who played baseball during World War II when most pro ball players were in the service. I was impressed with Penny Marshall's directing and the movie has good acting from Tom Hanks, Geena Davis, Madonna, Rosie O'Donnell, Lori Petty, etc. One of the best performances comes from Geena Davis as the catcher who gets caught in a battle of wills with her sister who is also the teams pitcher and played by Lori Petty. Lori Petty is a good actress but there were several times I wanted to tell her character to shut up and stop whining! If you like movies about baseball I think you just may like this movie!
Rating: Summary: Great Baseball Movie! Review: A League of their Own is one of the greatest moives ever. It is based on a true story. I love how it shows how girls playing baseball started back in the 50s. It not only shows how baseball grew in just one year but also how two sisters who seem to be always competeing against each other learn to grow to appreciate and love each other very much. It is a heartwarming movie that you can never get sick of. You can also find yourself resiting the lines of the movie.
I have many favorite parts of the movie but one of my favorite is when the coach, Jim Duggan, yells at one of the girls that messed up a play and she starts to cry. He repeats back to her "There's no crying in baseball." Then later on, the same girl makes another mistake and the coach doesn't yell at her this time just informs her that she needs to work on that on the off season. Just that part can show you that Jim Duggan, who didnt think girls playing baseball was possible, learns to appreciate his players and wants to help them succeed in playing that game.
I play softball and ever since I saw that movie when I was younger, I feel in love with the game. Whenever i'm having a bad day or I am in a slump and feel really down about my performance, I just watch that movie and it cheers me up or makes me what to practice harder to get out of the slump.
You should definitely purchase this movie and you will realize how great it truely is!
