Summary: A very in depth and informative book.
Review: I just finished reading Colored Pencil Portraits Step by Step by Ann Kullberg. I found this book to be most informative and the beautiful illustrations made it so enjoyable to read. This book stood out from other colored pencil books in that the text truely follows the title of step by step. The author takes the reader through every aspect of creating a colored pencil portrait. The text is very in depth throughout, as an example, in one chapter the author takes the reader through the creation of a portrait covering every single decision and color used to create it. Also the author's personal anecdotes were enjoyable as well as informative. I have studied colored pencil for years and learned many new techniques and tips.

Review: I would not recommend this book for the reason of repetition and lack of REAL technique.Colored pencil is tricky and I found no real solutions to this medium. Thanks

Summary: Believe the hype
Review: I've been associated with colored pencils (Prismacolor, back when they were still Berol) since high school so I remember the Bet Borgeson books back in the 80's...trust me,they don't hold a candle to this book.I bought Gary Greene's "Creating textures in colored pencil" in the mid 90's and was instantly besotted with the (unfortunately) small section devoted to Ann Kullberg and her technique. After years of trial and error,Kullberg's common sense approach had me slapping my head and saying, "Why didn't I think of that?" I used that section in Gary Greene's book as a reference guide ever afterwards and was pleased when Ms Kullberg gave us a full book (this one) showcasing her method and abilities. The illustrator Bill Nelson is probably the greatest practitioner in the Prismacolor field today, but Ann Kullberg is without a doubt the best teacher. An Invaluable reference guide for the prismacolor portrait artist.

Summary: An invaluable learning tool!
Review: I've had the book for a couple of days and I'm amazed at what a difference it has made in my portraits! I've been drawing for many years, have taken portrait classes, and read many books. Nothing else has had this much of an impact on my work. It is not for the beginner. You need to have a grasp of the basic concepts of drawing, such as the proportions of the face, before you attempt the techniques presented here. It was a joy to read.

Summary: Doesn't work miracles
Review: If creating natural-looking, and expressionate scenes of realistic people through your own creativity is what you're looking to achieve, I'd look for other books. Art is a form of expression and interpretation (portraiture as well!), if you follow the methods in this book to creating a portrait you'll find yourself denied of these privileges. DON'T think that this book will teach you to draw *real* people from your mind, basically what you're doing is enlarging a photograph on paper with colored pencil. Portraits can be lots more fun than doing this.

However, I have to say I learned a little bit more about colored pencils by reading this book and the drawings were nice to look at, which is why I gave it 2 stars. But I've read it maybe twice in the past two months, and so far only picked it up once more to find out the title of the book to write this review.

Summary: It's all here, folks!
Review: It was such a great honor for me to be asked by Northlight Books to write "Colored Pencil Portraits Step by Step" and one I took very seriously. I wanted to give you the very best I could. And as a self-taught artist with 12 years experience, I knew how valuable every bit of help can be...so I packed in as much info and as many examples as I possibly could in 128 pages. My goal was not to showcase my own work, but to help you improve yours!

I think you'll find just about everything covered in "Colored Pencil Portraits": basic materials, composition, painting light, skin tones (including white, Asian, and black skin tones), every imaginable kind of hair, individual facial features, all kinds of clothing, and the painting sequence of a portrait, with tons of full-color demos in every chapter. I've also included a section on the "business side" of portraits, including finding clients, contracts and pricing. Whether you're a rank beginner or a seasoned pro...or even an artist working in another medium, I really believe "Colored Pencil Portraits" has something in it for you!

Want to see more of my portrait work before hitting that shopping cart icon? Well, I can't give you a URL for my website.....but a search on my name will take you there! Thanks for taking an interest in my book...and I wish you many hours of Happy Coloring!

Summary: Ann Kullberg is Awesome!
Review: Not too long ago I purchased both the books "Colored Pencil Portraits Step by Step" and "Capturing Soft Realism in Colored Pencil" by Ann Kullberg via Amazon.com, and I was amazed by the quality of the instruction contained in the books as well as the exquisite talent of Ms. Kullberg. I noticed that one Amazon.com reviewer mentioned Ms. Kullberg offers a "companion CD" at her website to the Capturing Soft Realism in Colored Pencil book so I thought I'd visit there.

I sent an e-mail asking if she offered any kind of video instruction for portraiture more specifically and received a prompt, pleasant reply referring me to the new Portrait Tool Kit CD at http://annkullberg.com/contest.htm. This Portrait Tool Kit CD is a must-have! It offers a variety of invaluable videos, pictures, tips, et al for creating colored pencil portraits. I was so excited about it that I also purchased the "Little Boy" Skin Tone Portrait Kit at http://annkullberg.com/skin.htm - another must have! - which has everything you need (aside from the colored pencils) to complete a wonderful portrait step-by-step.

What impresses me so much about Ms. Kullberg is that she's not only an exceptional artist, but an exceptional teacher as well! All of her instructional books, videos, and kits are designed using a friendly and comprehensive, yet, easy-to-understand approach that leaves you feeling as if you have truly learned something valuable about the colored pencil medium as well as art itself!

Summary: ***Exceptional***
Review: On a scale of 1 to 10 I rank my artistic 'desire' at 10 and my artistic ability at -10. I've literally taken out *every* art book my library has to offer (100+) and it wasn't until I read Ann Kullberg's - Colored Pencil Portraits that I actually felt 'I CAN do this.' The instructions are clear and inspirational and the book is astoundingly beautiful. I've placed it on my wish list and hope to have my own copy soon.
