Rating: Summary: Ender's Shaodw Review: The great work in this book is not what it's talking about, it's how it was written. Often contains surprising reactions.
Rating: Summary: Can't I put Six Stars? Review: Okay, let's get the "first things first" out of the way. "Ender's Game" is truely on of my favorite book, and Orson Scott Card is my hero. i can only dream of following his footsteps in the wide world of fantasy writing. okay, anyways, this book is superbly written and it took me only a week to finish the 500 odd page book. the sequels are just as spellbinding and marvelous, too. this book is HIGHLY recommended by me to anyone who appriciated great science fiction.
Rating: Summary: Ender's Game Review: Characters you can associate with and a story to keep you reading into the wee hours of the night. A real treat to any reader.
Rating: Summary: OK, not marvelous Review: NOTE- The criticism that follows are my initial impressionsafter finishing Ender's Game...if it reads a little incoherently, that's why.I read this book because of all the hype, and I was expecting alot more from a book that won both the Hugo and Nebula awards. Sure, the story is implausible, but to me it didn't matter so much. After all, the Star Wars trilogy, movies which are considered (rightly so) cinematic masterpieces contain equally implausible sequences. However, what makes Star Wars so endearing is the way that it forms memorable characters and draws on thousands of years of mythology to project very memorable themes. Ender's game uses a variaton on one of these (young hero pushed by fate or forces out of his control to save world), nothing much comes out of it other than mere entertainment. The book started out well enough, however Card's utter lack of physical description prevents the reader from gaining a full picture of the world he is trying to create. People wear "civilian clothes," the battle room is "big and dimly lit," Card litters his book with virtually no description! We don't even know what the ships look like! Sometimes, it's just plain hard to follow the action. Reason? Again, Card's descriptions are either nonexistant or too vague. The action, while sometimes exciting, becomes repitious. Ender wakes up, wins battle, goes to bed tired, commanders push him harder, Ender almost cracks, but copes and wins next battle...rinse and repeat. I soon lost interest, Ender became too invincible for me to worry about after a while. Ender does become a memorable character, and does so through some fairly memorable scenes, but what is lacking is an original story. Ender's characterization is good, the other characterizations range from OK to passable to just plain bad. And, It is predictable in parts, and I was also ahead of the author in several places. The subplot involving Valentine and Peter in political intrigue warranted more explanation and seemed inexcusably forced (hey, all the Wiggins are geniuses, I guess they can accomplish anything). The story, although only 15 years old, is already showing its age (Warsaw Pact? Simulations done only on 2D screens?), doesn't forbode well for being a sci-fi "timeless" classic. Now, don't get me wrong, the novel is entertaining, in a nice action movie sort of entertaining. Yet, even though I'm not an avid sci-fi reader, I can't say that this book is entertaining or memorable in a way that merits 5 stars or such high awards. Buy the...book if you want to read it, but don't go into it with very high expectations. Heart of Darkness or The Great Gatsby it ain't. If this is a sci-fi classic, sci-fi is in some trouble. Please, if you think this book is really amazing, there are other, better books that should blow your mind. 6 out of 10.
Rating: Summary: Much more than science fiction. Review: Ender's Game is much more than a science fiction novel. Pay no attention to the naysayers who can't understand more than the technical aspects of fiction. On a whim, I read the first chapter at the bookstore, and ended up sitting there until closing time 5 hours later, still reading. This must be one of the most intense and influential books I've ever read in my life. As indicated by the previous reviews, many people can identify with characters in the story; critics of Card's character development only show that they missed out on childhoods that make such a story profoundly moving to almost all its readers.
Rating: Summary: Ender's Game: A review Review: Ender's Game: A review, by Jay of London Ender is a 6-year-old genius at the beginning of our book, when he gets the Moniter removed. Ender believes that he can go back to a "normal" life, after having the goverment retract their Moniter, and Peter, his brother who (to put it nicly) is a future Exterminator (not really, power-hungrey Peter gets what he wants, and deserves, in the end), anyways, Peter will start having a "brotherly" relationship with him. Then Colenel Graff comes and whisks Ender off to Battle School. There Ender learns to be a good soilder through isolation, games, "Fairyland", and using his own creativity. Valentine, the only one who loves him, (his parents do, but it gets complicated), ends up siding with Peter, in a plot to take over the world. I'll leave it at that, but just know that this is one of the best books I've ever read.
Rating: Summary: One of THE BEST Review: Ender moved me beyond comparison.A real classic in SF, and rightly so.What else is there to say than truly magnificient.
Rating: Summary: What a pleasant surprise. Review: When I first picked up this book it was for a school assinment. It was an old, battered up, hardback copy. I wasn't at all excited about reading it. I have to admit, although I love fantasy, it takes a really great looking sci-fi to get me interested. I decided to read it one night to put myself to sleep. I opened up to the first page and was hooked. If I learned anything it was to take the saying, "don't judge a book by it's cover" seriously. I deffinatly recomend it. Even if your not a big sci-fi fan.
Rating: Summary: Moving and Rich Review: I discovered this book as an adult, and over the past 15 years have re-read it many times. While I often find science fiction childish and shallow, ENDER is a work of literary merit that simply uses a science fiction environment. This book is a touching story of the maturation of a boy who is both human and a hero. It is a compelling comment on hatred and the power of love to overcome everything. One should not read it without also reading Speaker for the Dead. The remaining Ender books, while interesting, pale in comparison to the first two, and nothing Card has written before or since comes close.....The only other "science fiction" book that compares in depth and quality is The Sparrow by Mary Doria Russell.
Rating: Summary: Non- SciFi Read Loves Ender's Game Review: I was at my aunt's house last year and I picked up Ender's game. When I was about 7 I loved Star Trek but I hadn't enjoyed sci-fi in years. I started to read Ender's game and I finished it in about 3 days. It was one of the best books I have ever read. It delved into physical conflict in the case of the Bugger Wars, emotional conflict with Ender's problems with Peter, and psychological conflict with Ender's video game. The book is well written and leaves you wanting more. The surprising twists and clever plot make this book perfect for the sci-fi lover or someone who finds the future interesting. Anyone can read this book and I suggest that you do.
