Review: I read this book at the end of the school year when the kids are at their most antsy. It kept them quiet each time I read. It was a wonderful experience for them and me. I did not read ahead and made each discovery with my students. My low-income minority students were captivated by Stanley and cheered when I would pick up the book to read. I even had one child offer me a dollar just to keep reading.(I kept reading, but didn't take the dollar!) This is a book that reminds me of Maniac Magee. It has a story that pulls you in and keeps you turning the pages until you find out how it ends. It is such a wonderful experience to share a beautifully written book.

Summary: An award-winner that's earned it
Review: I read this book because a friend recommended it to me, and I'm incredibly glad she did. I was familiar with some of Sachar's other work -- the old "Wayside School" books, for instance -- and I expected this book to be along the same lines in terms of tone and comedy.I was completely blown away. This wasn't the silly, happy Sachar of the "Wayside" books or the afterschool special feel of "There's a Boy in the Girl's Bathroom." This was something different -- funny, but dark, menacing but inspiring. This is one of those books that makes a writer think, "wow... so THAT'S how you do it." I won't go into the plot, since there are about 2000 other reviews you can look at for that, I'll just tell you what's good about it. The story is tight -- I read the whole book in three hours. There is nothing extra, no fat, no padding. Everything comes together perfectly. The characters are real -- the boys at the prison camp aren't hardened monsters, but they aren't innocent waifs either. These are kids who are at Green Lake because they have done bad things and, even if they're likeable, they're capable of doing bad things again. Stanley, our hero, is unlucky, but not broken. He's got guts and smarts, and with those attributes together he accomplishes great things. It's really great to see an award-winning book that DESERVES it.

Summary: Couldn't stop digging for more!
Review: I read this book before I gave to to my class to read. I couldn't put it down. Literally! The chapters are extremely short and keep you interested. I found it to be an excellent book for both girls and boys in the 6th to 7th grade. I was really pleased with my find.

Summary: Truly Amazing
Review: I read this book for a class assignment, and by the cover, it looked boring. But the saying is "Don't judge a book by it's cover" which is apparently true. I started reading it one night-and couldn't stop! I wasn't a big fan of Louis Sachar until I read 'Holes'. Now I've probably read 'Holes' 3 times since I read it last year. It's a truly amazingly good book.

Summary: You can't put it down.
Review: I read this book in 3 days. It had a lot of suspense, like when Stanley found out what his family member meant by "I saw the big thumb." The characters at the camp all had nicknames. They all seemed to make friends with newcomers. I am a lot like some of the characters. It reminds me of when I have confronted the police...I would this recommend this book to middle school kids, because if you have a book report to do, it doesn't take long to read because once you get into it you can't stop or put it down.

Review: I read this book in 5th grade and I believe that it is a good book.(I'm going into 6th)The Part that discourages you from reading it is the begining because it starts out pretty slow. After you get past the first part the book is a very fun adventurous book that will suprise you in the end. I recomend this book to you because I think it is a good book to read.

Summary: In a world of so much evil, good prevails!
Review: I read this book in one evening. I kept reading wanting to know what in the world would anyone find buried in a "used to be" lake. The main character, Stanley, seems to be a drifter from the start. Soon we discover he is a boy of much compassion and strength, as well as smarts.

Summary: What an odd book?!?
Review: I read this book just when the movie was out in the theatres. I was going to see the movie, but wanted to be a nerd and read the book before hand. I usually have a 90% average in english, but when I was reading this book, I found it very hard to keep track of what was going on. In other words, it was very confusing, and so odd. I mean I guess it is a fiction novel, and I'm sure that Louis Sachar means well, but it is way too confusing. If he really wanted to include all of that information, why didn't he just make two books, the origional, and then a sequal to it. It would be alot easier for younger readers to understand!!
