Rating: Summary: Trying too much Review: Hillary explains a lot of the politics of her husband's presidency rather simplistically and at times gets hung up on the a lot of boring details. But, she does provide a behind- the- scenes look at what it is like to live in the White House that is very interesting. The first part of the book describes her childhood in a very storybook manner. Later she moves on to her young political career and how she met and fell in love with Bill Clinton (or as she usually, and somewhat coldly refers to him "the President"). While telling about her 8 years as First Lady she intertwines her political initiatives with antidotes of her travels. The antidotes sadly, are the interesting part. She is constantly giving us a laundry list of people who helped her- all of whom she refers to as "close friends." The book seems to be a response to all the negative press she has received. She seems to be saying "I can be likeable and funny too, right?" Maybe people would be able to relate to her a little more if she didn't distance herself so much in her writing. Also, her oversimplification and one- sided portrayal of the many "gate" scandals tries too hard to prove the Clintons' innocence. People like Kenneth Starr and Newt Gingrich are shown as evil, while the Clintons are innocent bystanders. For someone who was too young to understand what was going on in the country during Bill's two terms, Hillary provides a good summary of the issues of the times. Overall, I think the book would have been more entertaining if she didn't try so hard to clear her name. People will make their own opinions. It is best to not try and force them to see things your way.
Rating: Summary: a sophmore female college student Review: The book as a whole was worth my time. I bought the book after speaking with my high school senior English teacher. She told me that the book focused a lot on policies and showed Hillary's political ambitions. That is exactly what it is. The book was very informative for a youngester like me(19 yrs old) who has not been fully aware of the different political agenda in our nation and the full extent to which we should be concerned about them. For me it was very helpful. US history in highschool usually does not get up to the Clinton Era or even the Former Bush era, usually ends around Nixon and the Watergate Scandle. The book itself is a easy read informative on the events going on in the middle east, that is currently happening as well as the Ethnic cleansing in Bosnia and Africa, the treatment of women in other countries. It opened my eyes to the political issues in our countries as well as health care and women's issues. Unlike a dry history book it keeps the issues alive and interesting. One does not fall asleep while reading the book, because she does include her life and it adds a touch of humanity to it. However, the book only gets three stars because it's hard to clear up the actual sincerity of the tone in her work. She still writes the book with very much caution as she should be doing, to safeguard her political career, and one feels that you do not truly get to know her behind the image she puts out in public. I still highly recommend the book to other high school students and college students who are interested what is going on in the world as well as the political arena of the United States. It is an easy read that will broaden your horizons to see beyound the MTV and celebrity news that many only seem to be focused on.
Rating: Summary: don't waste your money Review: This book is a total waste of money. It gives no insight into Hilary, just long and never ending insignificant events about insignificant people she encountered. She only enumerates pointless details and fails to show how she relates to them. For example, she talks about the division of her highschool into many groups but doesn't tell us their impact on her. This book is supposed to be about you Hillary. If I just wanted a to read a list of events, I would have bought a history book. Obviously Hilary wrote this book because she is trying to work the fame she got from her husband to generate money. Apparently she did not write this book because she had wonderful story to tell about her life.
Rating: Summary: About what you'd expect from an active politician Review: A good and honest book that as expected pulls alot of punches because the author holds a political position. For those seeking "the truth" about every accusation made against the Clintons by the vermin scum Republican toads diappointment lurks within. I didn't know really anything about Mrs. Clinton's life other than as wife to the President, so I found those chapters about her childhood and young adulthood very interesting. I think the book reveals a person that is worthy of respect and admiration.
Rating: Summary: A Registered Republican's Positive Reaction Review: Very readable and informative. I didn't buy the book--it was given to me as a gift by one of my sons. I would highly recommend buying it. I recognize that part of the mission of writing the book may have a self-serving aspect to it. However, I found that I got to know her in a different way, especially the worldwide emphasis she put on the equality issue for women. It seems that her efforts in those areas seem to have had some lasting effect. Also it gave me an insight into the special, and memorable, experience being First Lady created for her personally, her daughter and also the three of them as a family. It always seemed her and Chelsea had a good relationship but it was confirmed for me after reading the book. She also brought into focus the serious economic and social problems that plague many countries around the world as well as our own social and economic problems. There was enough detail about the issues but not so much that made me want to skip pages or sections. It also reminded me of the burden that the investigations placed on them and their friends. The Clintons were not as bad as it seemed to be at the time it was happening, but it also probably was not as simple as she seemed to imply that it was. It was also well worth reading for its historical perspective.
Rating: Summary: This Book Made Me Nervous Review: I got this book as a gift. To be honest it made me nerous just holding the book. Life is short. I do not have time to read propaganda and fiction. This is just a PR move to broaden her appeal for 2008. I hope she runs and Rudy makes a comeback. It is not really a book as one knows books. Sorry but that is my opinion. Jack in Toronto
Rating: Summary: don't write a review based on politics Review: Two words: Great book. I doubt many of the negative reviewers actually can read, or read the book. It's wonderful, and well written.
Rating: Summary: Truth verses Lies Review: This is a must buy! Find out the truth behind all of the lies about the Clintons!
Rating: Summary: Insightful and Intelligent Review: I did not find the writer of this book to be at all 'self praising', but rather, painfully honest and straight-forward... SOMETHING WE NEED MORE OF IN DURING THE BUSH YEARS. How can any intelligent American, any intelligent HUMAN for that matter, think of the Clintons as self-praising, after the ordeals they withstood during their White House years? Yes, they brought much of it upon themselves, but I don't think that by talking, or writing, about things in retrospect with such honesty can be considered 'self praising' at all. Writing the book had to have been difficult for Mrs. Clinton, and reading it must have been hard for her husband, but at least it was honest and not contrived. However, it would go against logic for a hardcore republican and Bush supporter to show any admiration or 'like', for Hilary Clinton. But, I have to ask, how can any intelligent American complain about the Clinton's (so-called) 'self-praising'? If they do praise themselves (which I don't think they have done at all), it is much easier for me to tolerate than having to TRY and comprehend anything that idiotic Bush says. I think this is an honest book, and it must have been hard for Hilary Clinton to write, and hard for her husband to read. But they had to have enjoyed the parts filled with all the alleged 'self praise', right? WHATEVER!!!!
Rating: Summary: Living Her Story Review: In a word, this book was not interesting. I pride myself for having read many autobiographies. This book just lost me. I think it takes a ghost writer instead of just a village.
