I am currently reading Little house on the prairie which is the 2nd book in this series. It is really good too. I recommend this book to anyone wanting a good read!!
Rating: Summary: Remembrance of Things Past Review: While in her 60s Laura began to write about her childhood memories of the 1870s-80s. This first book was about her early life in the Big Woods of Wisconsin. Later, her second book was about her family's move to the virgin prairies. Like other Americans, then or now, her family moved to a seeming better life. But others stayed to live where their grandfather's grandfather resided. This book teaches the importance to children in obeying their parents, and what can happen if they don't. Her second book shows an improvement over her first. This book presents a simple life that has disappeared beneath asphalt roads. Many Americans still raise their own crops, milk cows, feed and slaughter pigs, and hunt for food. But what has changed is the decreasing number of owner-operated small holders, and the increasing number of corporate agricultural factories. Few want to return to the olden days of constant manual labor, although the Amish continue to thrive on their lands. I hope her books will continue to be read long after the fantasies of JK Rowlings are as forgotten as those of Horatio Alger, or those Wild West stories popular when Laura was alive.
Rating: Summary: Awesome start to awesome series! Review: The first time I read this book I was seven. It is very interesting and easy to read--written just like a little child thinks, though Laura I. Wilder was quite grown when she wrote these books. All these books advance in reading level and content, which is why THESE HAPPY GOLDEN YEARS and THE FIRST FOUR YEARS are really for preteens\teens. Anyway, LITTLE HOUSE IN THE BIG WOODS is very fun. Laura has many adventures in the woods, listening to stories, helping churn bread, and going to celebrations. Anyone who is or has a little sister should read this...Laura quite openly tells how annoying Mary was! I LOVE the Little House series...get it! and the ROSE YEARS are good too...
Rating: Summary: Welcome to the World of Little House Review: This is the first book in the amazing Little House series written by Laura Ingalls Wilder. These books act as a biography and historical record of a pioneer family, the Ingalls. Laura is the 2nd daughter of Charles and Caroline Ingalls. In this particular book we meet up with the Ingalls family living in the big woods of Wisconsin. Charles is a farmer, a hunter, a trapper and adventurer. Caroline takes care of the family and runs the household. Laura and Mary are two young girls living in a log cabin in the big, dark woods. The most charming aspect of this book is that we see pioneer life through the eyes of a young child. It is interesting to note that Laura Ingalls Wilder did not start writing until she was in her 60's but she still tells this story in a very child like way. This is not to say the books are not well written, they certainly are. But the writing gets increasingly better as the series contiues. I'm not sure if this was by design or not... of course the stories are told by a much older narrator as the story continues. This would definitely lend itself to better narration. These books are excellent reads for children in 3rd grade and up. They are written in a nice, simple style, yet they are just challenging enough to keep kids thinking. I have also found that younger children, especially in 2nd grade love to hear these stories as read alouds. If you want your child to learn about life long ago these books are a great stepping stone. This first volume in the series concludes with Pa Ingalls moving on with his family to the great west. It seems the big woods were getting smaller as more people moved in, and Charles got the itch to move on. The Ingalls family heads out on a wonderful adventure to the wide open environment of the prairie. If you read it, you will find it hard not to want to read the rest of the story and continue the series. It's hard not to love these sweet family oriented tales.
Rating: Summary: I like, I don't like Review: I think "Little House in the Big Woods" is a little boring, because there isn't any action to it compared to "Little House on the Prairie." I think what made the book boring was the quietness in the house, for example, the only noise they had was Pa's fiddle. Laura's mom, and her sister Mary were too ladylike. Mary liked to wear her bonnet, but Laura didn't. Laura wasn't very proper and that made Laura's mother mad. When Laura got mad at a Mary for saying that blonde curls are better than straight brown hair, and then smacked her, it made the book more interesting. Other than that I liked it when Ma thought the bear was Sukey (the cow), because it made me want to know what was going to happen next. I wanted to keep reading so I could get to the next book.. I think you should read "Little House in the Big Woods" to get to "Little House on the Prairie" because it will lead you to more interesting action.
Rating: Summary: If mystery adventure is your thing than read this wild book Review: The Little House in the Big Woods Have you ever wanted to go back in time? Let Laura Ingalls help you. She wrote about this family and how they lived in The Little House In the Big Woods. Harvesting, planting, cooking, hunting and sowing are all done manually. They did this all summer. For only a mom,dad a seven and eight year old plus baby Carie that is amazing to me how they used to work. The two girls are small but don't let that fool you because that seven year old gets into a lot of trouble looking for mystery and adventure.Unlike her sister who never breaks the rules. One of her mystery's is when her father went to town and something happened but I can't tell you what.If you want to find out what happened in this wild cat's mystery, read the book first hand.
Rating: Summary: A great read for anyone. Review: My favorite book of all time is Little House in the Big Woods , a novel by Laura Ingalls Wilder. The first reason I love this book is that it has so many descriptive words in it. Laura has such a way with words, and she uses them in just the right ways. For example, " The great, dark trees of the big wood...". The second reason is, that she puts in little stories about her grandpa and father, as a little boy. The third reason is, I love old things like antiques and log cabins. She can teach you all about pioneer days, in a great way. Laura also puts exciting things about her life on her family's farm in the book. If you like historical fiction and a great read, this is the book for you.

Rating: Summary: We are more similar than different Review: I recently read "Little House in the Big Woods" to my daughter, just as my mother had read it to me. I loved it as a child and she loves it just as much. I had just read her "Dear Hope ... Love Grandma" (Huwwitz and Wasburn) about a Jewish family and I was struck by how similar many of the values of the two families were. They couldn't be more different, in time, place, religion, and yet their values of love of family, love of God, humor, warmth, kindess sustained them through hard times in just the same way. These are the kinds of books our children should be reading, books that affirm life and family and all that's good in the world. Pick up "Little House in the Big Woods" and read it again. I hope "Little House in the Big Woods" is still around for my daughter to read to her daughter, and so the cycle will continue. Good books are good books. Don't be seduced by what's new and neglect what is deservedly a classic.
Rating: Summary: A wonderful glimpse into a family of long ago Review: I think the beginning of this book is the best place to start. It explains who Mary and Laura and Baby Carrie and Pa and Ma are, what their house is like and what their life is like. Many other parts of the book are equally wonderful: Mary and Laura playing dolls with the vegetables in the attic; the sugaring-off dance at Grandpa's, and the warm snugness of the little house. As a child I especially liked the chapter about the bears.
