Summary: Best of the "Prey" series by far (2/28/02)
Review: I have no idea how I missed this Sandford fiction in his "Prey" series, but I did. It's definitely one of the first with Lucas Davenport. It's an absolute jewel right down to the last sentence. I actually enjoyed it more than the newer "Prey" books.
John Sanford poured so much detail in to his characters. The killers (notice the plural) in this novel keep Davenport reeling with questions to the end, which is also a terrific surprise.
If you're a new reader of John Sandford, go back and start with this book before reading the newer "Prey" books. It will help you to understand Lucas Davenport better as well as his police pals.

Summary: Sandford is great. He keeps you on the edge of your seat.
Review: Eyes of Prey is the first John Sanford book I have read. Now I can't resist reading his work. Sanford is a sound writer and he does a good job of showing details. In addition to being very interesting, this book is easy to read and is even easier to get into. Lucas Davenport is an awesome character. He is everything a hero could want to be. He is slick, sneaky, and gets the job done. Michael Bekker is a very fitting person for the job of a serial killer. Until the end of the book I thought he might even get away with the killings. Druze fits in almost as well as Bekker in that his facial features allow him to kill someone without being bothered. Bekker's beauty and Druze's childhood make them excessively dangerous and are definately two people that I would not want to meet up with. Druze and Bekker are a dynamic team and if it were not for Bekker's stupidity, they may have actually gotten away with the murders. Great book Mr. Sandford! I hope you can continue your success!

Summary: A Good Read
Review: Eyes of Prey is a highly suspenseful novel about a doctor who wh plays a cat and mouse game with Minneapolis, P.D., namely Davenport, and takes part in several gruesome murders with a hideous partner in crime. Sandford delivers a good effort with this one but it's not quite as suspenseful as his debut, Rules of Prey. Overall, it's still a better than average suspense novel and very gripping and tense dialogue.

Summary: Hold onto your hat
Review: I just started the Prey series a couple of weeks ago and I must say these books are great!! Eyes of prey is so creepy. Since reading the book I have become more aware of my surrounding when walking out to the car in the parking lot. Who knows there might be a Carlos Druze out there waiting and watching. It just gives me the creeps. Michael Bekker is just a flat out crazy, drugged up, psycho. The end has a litle twist to it that I like....I kept wondering if we would ever find out who "Loverboy" was and you do....on the last page. This is one of those books that once you start you have to just keep going. It's so hard to put down. If you haven't read any other of the prey series books then start from the beginning and go from there because the books build on each other.

Summary: ghoulish crime story that happens to be *very* good...
Review: Quite honestly I was somewhat disappointed with my first John Sandford novel ('Rules of Prey'), mostly because too much time was spent on the lead character (a police investigator), his famous love life, etc. But I saw 'Eyes of Prey' in a secondhand book shop, bought it, read it, and ... wow! Mr Sandford did a much better job with this third installment of the 'prey' series.

In 'Eyes of Prey' we still have our stud puppy Minneapolis police investigator trying to solve the murder/mutiliation of an adulterous woman. Her husband, a medical professional and substance abuser, is not a suspect but ... he *seems* to be involved. However when these horrendous events repeat themselves we are pulled into the sick world of the husband and another very curious character. Thankfully Sandford spends little time on the private life of the hero and concentrates on delivering a slick (and frighteningly believable) crime story. Lots of plot twists, scary moments, etc. And the ending (literally the last page) is terrific.

Bottom line: not for the squeamish. But this is one nightmare told with panache.

Summary: Stumbled upon this prey...
Review: I read numerous books and, up until now, haven't read any of the prey series. I was suspect at first, since I'm in academics, I thought this series might be poorly written--as are some popular novels that seem to fly off the book shelves. Having been skeptical at first, I was floored by Sandford's writing and ability to place you right beside Lucas Davenport, and watch the fast-paced plot unravel. Lucas is a self-destructive character that seems to come out smelling like a rose by the end of the book. As of now there are 14 Prey novels, and I have purchased all of them--after reading Eyes of Prey, of course.

Eyes of Prey is acutally the third book in the series and catches up with Davenport as he is chasing a killer that has a nasty habit of taking the eyes from his victims. The pace of the book is fast, and the plot is peppered with so many twists and turns that you will be unable to stop reading--I read the book in two days. Davenport is the type of character that keeps you wanting more as you finger each page, anticipating the next exciting plot-twist.

I would recommend that you pick up all of the prey books, but start at the beginning--I unfortunatley did not. 14 in all and here are the books in order:

RULES OF PREY
SHADOW PREY
EYES OF PREY
SILENT PREY
WINTER PREY
NIGHT PREY
MIND PREY
SUDDEN PREY
SECRET PREY
CERTAIN PREY
EASY PREY
CHOSEN PREY
MORTAL PREY
NAKED PREY--just released this year!!!

Summary: cheap writing
Review: just how many times can a writer fit in the f-word onto one page? i started to read this book and had to put it away, being disgusted at the [bad] language.

Summary: Best Prey Book I've Read
Review: I've read Eyes of Prey, Easy Prey, Sudden Prey, Mind Prey, and Certain Prey--and I enjoyed Eyes of Prey the most. I liked all the characters, and the plot was just about right, although the relationship with the nun was unnecessary. Sandford has some serious skill, and he flexes it here, more so than in some of his other books. If you haven't heard any of the audio versions of the Prey series, I highly recommend them. Richard Ferrone (sp?) is amazing. Sandford and Ferrone are great together.

Summary: Gruesome and yet excellent!!
Review: The eyes, they just had to go. If not, they would haunt you long after the vicims were dead and buried. Cutting them out, that's the ticket. The murder of a well known lady in the town shocks everyone...
When Detective Lucas Davenport gets the case, he's not sure he can do it. After recent butal cases, these nasty murders is not what he needs. The eyes is the worst part... Davenport soon realize that he's up against an evil man with a twisted mind and a facination for death, but yet very intelligent. Trying to catch this person will be hard...
This is one of John Sandford's first books in the Prey Series (#4). And he shows with this book that he's a great writer. His way of adding twists and caputring you right from the start is only a couple of the things that makes him great. The killer of Eyes of Prey can, to a certain extent, even be compared to Hannibal Lector. The gross almost rituals and the horrible acts. Sandfords way of describing the way the characters think, their desires and their way of acting is unique!
Once you're started reading the book you're trapped. No way to get out until you're done with the book. Highly recommended to anyone who loves other Prey-books, and thrillers!!
