Rating: Summary: This book needs improvement! Review: Ale Nicolet English hr.1 December 21, 2000 The Slave Dancer The book, The Slave Dancer, is about a brave boy, named Jessie, and his amazing adventure on a slave ship. Jessie was kidnapped from his home in New Orleans, and taken to a slave ship ready to leave for Africa. On his journey to Africa, he met the ship's crew, including Clay Purvis and Ben Stout. They soon reached the coast of Africa, where the slaves boarded the ship. The slaves were in chains and treated horribly, asthough they were objects instead of human beings. Jessie played his fife to dance the slaves, and this went on until nearly the end of the journey, when a ship was seen in the distance. The crew found out that it was an American ship, so they threw all the slaves overboard. Jessie saved a slave boy named Ras, and together they hid in the hold, just before a terrible storm came and wiped out everything. When Jessie and Ras came out everything was ruined. They swam to shore and found shelter with and old man, named Daniel. He told them they were in Mississippi. Daniel helped Ras get to the northern part of America, and told Jessie the way home. Jessie got home safely and everything is almost like it was before he'd been kidnapped. I thought that The Slave Dancer was not that great of a book. It was very well worded and descriptive, but it was a very cruel and violent story. I also think that the author could have added more detail. I thought this, because when I read about Jessie going home, everything was right to the point. It seamed that all he did was walk down the street. Another thing he could have done to make the book a little bit more interesting would be to tell what happened to Ras, the crew, or Purvis. He could have said that Ras was really taken to a place where he would be a slave instead of the north, or Ben Stout could have been found alive. This book had a very adventurous story to it, but it is not a book that I would read on my spare time.
Rating: Summary: Derserved the Newberry medal Review: The Slave Dancer had a great plot to the book. A very poor boy named Jessie is captured by two crewmembers of a slave ship called the Moonlight. He is forced to play his fife against his will to keep the slaves healthy and strong. The crews job is to sail to Africa, pick up the slaves, sail to Cuba to sell the slaves, then sail back to their homes safely and with out being caught by another ship. The plan fails and the ship sails into a storm while on their way to Cuba. The crew and slaves all die except the main character Jessie and a slave boy named Ras. They are saved when they swim to land and meet a man named Daniel. He cares for them and feeds them to keep them alive. Eventually, Ras goes north to the free land where he will not become a slave and Jessie goes to his home in New Orleans. The Slave Dancer was a well-written book. The Slave Dancer in my opinion showed how horrible it was to be on a slave ship. It was good because the author described how it would be on a slave ship very well. I would recommend it to children in-between 11-18 because it was a little hard to follow what was going on. I also think the author could have made the book easier to follow. Overall I think the Slave Dancer was an amazing book.
Rating: Summary: The slave dancer Review: I didn't like the book The Slave Dancer by Paula Fox, because it was boring and I didn't enjoy reading it. It was hard to follow and I didn't like the plot. It was adventurous and sometimes interesting but I couldn't get into it at all. I would not recommend this book because I don't think it was very interesting and the characters were hard to follow, because some died and I didn't know were they went. This book is not for everyone, but if you read it I hope you enjoy it. The book The Slave Dancer by Paula Fox tells a story about a boy named Jessie. This boy lives in New Orleans and plays his fife on the streets. His Father drowned in the Mississippi River so Jessie lived with his mother and sister Becky. One night while walking home from his aunt's house, he was captured by men and brought aboard The Moonlight. Soon he realized he was brought aboard a slave ship to play his fife to dance the slaves. He saw many horrible people and things on the ship. Soon the boat reached the coast of Africa, and the slaves were aboard and all the sick blacks were thrown overboard. On the way back they came across an American ship, they threw all of the blacks overboard quickly. Ras, a black boy, hid with Jessie below the deck for a long time. Many days past, the boat started to sink to Jessie and Ras swam to shore. All of the crew was dead, except for the captain who went down with the ship. An elderly black man helped Ras and Jessie get home.Jessie was scared for life, because after playing his pipe for the the slaves he couldn't hear any kind of music.
Rating: Summary: The Slave Dancer Review: After reading The Slave Dancer, I found it to be a very intense book, and a book that can scare people with America's horrid past. It is about a slave ship, and a boy who was captured to work on the ship. He is immediately introduced to unfairness and the cruel reality that used to be. He travels to Africa, and sees slaves being killed and abused. This part of the book tells a lot about the gruesome way things used to be. He hates the way the slaves are treated. Through the journey he meets the hardships that the crew on a slave ship would be forced to face. Some of the things he must go through are very frightening. In the end, his ship is torn apart and Jessie, the captured boy, finds that he and a boy named Ras are the only survivors. This event is extremely sudden and very scary. On land, he meets a man named Daniel. Daniel gives them a place to stay for a while, and soon after, they make their journey home. This book tells a lot about our history, and how cruel and unjust people could be towards others. I had a hard time enjoying this book due to the terrible behavior displayed in it, but still, it was a very well written book. After reading The Slave Dancer, by Paula Fox, I found it was an excellent book with many interesting events. In the beginning, a young boy named Jessie is walking along an alley where he is captured. Two men named Purvis and Sharkey, take him to a ship, a slaver, called Moonlight. From then on, Jessie's life changes dramatically. He becomes a part of the crew and develops a bond with the other sailors. After many nights, Jessie's boat comes to Africa, where it will pick up slaves. The slaves are very unhappy, and Jessie dislikes the cruel way they are treated. His job is to make the slaves dance with his fife. He hates this job. A lot of time passes when the ship crew is almost home to America. "Suddenly, the ship shakes recklessly." Jessie meets a young African boy named Ras, and they stay safe. After a while the boat reaches shore. They are the only survivors. On shore, they meet a man named Daniel. He tells them that they are in Mississippi. Ras is sent North, while Jessie returns home. There is great joy when he arrives. The Slave Dancer is a very harsh, dramatic book, based on facts from long ago.
Rating: Summary: The Slave Dancer Review: The Slave Dancer by Paula Fox explains the challenges of a boy named Jessie, and the crew on The "Moonlight", a ship. Jessie a 13-year-old boy, is captured and taken on the ship with his fife that's used to keep the slaves healthy and strong by dancing for the captain. On the ship they went to Africa to pick up the slaves. Sailing on a cloudy night there was a storm. Jessie and the 13 year old African slave were the only survivors after the large shipwreck. They swam and swam and finally when they were terribly tiresome they came to land. Daniel, an old man found Jessie. Jessie walks from the man's house to his house. I thought The Slave Dancer was a pretty good book. There were a lot of heart-breaking moments and scary parts. My heart really broke when Jessie got whiped. The author really told you what it would be like to be a slave. There are descriptive words and a lot of suspense. I was on the edge of my chair whrn the storm happend. I This book can get confusing but overall it is good. I would recommend this book to you.

I think The Slave Dancer was an exiting book. In some places the book described some gory moments such as killing, dying, and shooting. Over all I think this is an okay book, and also very factual on the subject of the slave trade. If I had to rate this book from one to ten, I would rate it a four. I would recommend this book to people who like adventure books.
Rating: Summary: Gosh, why did this thing win the Newbery Medal? Review: The Slave Dancer The Slave Dancer by Paula Fox is an eventful book. First, Jessie is kidnapped. He is taken from his home in New Orleans and put on a ship called "The Moonlight", a slaver. Jessie is taken because he has many uses such as playing the fife. When Jessie is taken aboard the ship he meets the crew. He takes a liking to some of them such a s Clay Purvis and Ben Stout. Jessie doesn't like the captain because he is cruel. Next, Ben Stout steals the caiptains egg, causing Jessie to never trust him from that point on. Then " The Moonlight" arrives in Africa to board slaves. There are many tragedies but an up-point is that Jessie meets a young slave boy named Ras (Raz). There is much more to this book, but you must read it for yourself. In conclusion, The Slave Dancer is an eventful book. I think the book The Slave Dancer is a book not everyone would enjoy. I did not like it because it used inappropriate sayings and words. Second, it's just plain boring because the characters have no sense of anything that is going on their lives. This book can be confusing for anyone and should not be read by or to young children. In this book, everything happens just at the right time and place. No one can be that perfect. Also, this book is too short because it's only has 9 chapters. This book isn't a book anyone person would like.
Rating: Summary: The Slave Dancer Review: After reading the book, The Slave Dancer by Paula Fox, I found many interesting and historical events happened. Jessie lives a peaceful life in New Orleans before Clay Purvis and Claudius Sharkey from the slave ship, the Moonlight, capture him. The slavers captured Jessie because they wanted him to play his fife, a musical instrument, for the slaves, so they'd be strong and stay healthy on the long trip. After going on a long journey to Africa and back, they run into problems and Jessie has to be brave. Jessie is helped by an old man to get back home after his lengthy and unexpected journey. After Jessie's journey he lives a good life, even though his adventures change him forever. The book The Slave Dancer by Paula Fox is filled with treachery and injustice. I liked it in some ways and in some ways I didn't. I liked it because it was exciting and it told the truth. America should be ashamed of the things they did to slaves at one point. I didn't like it because I realized how unfair people have been and how much pain and misery Africans have gone through. It was a good story and I suggest reading it.

Jessie, a young boy, is kidnapped along with his fife by two seamen and is taken to The Moonlight, an American slaver. He meets Purvis and Stout, and the other members of the crew and gets to know them well. Purvis is accused of stealing one of the captain's eggs and gets whipped, though everyone knows that Stout really stole it. The Moonlight arrives in Africa and the slaves board the ship. Nicholas Spark, the mate, is whipped and thrown overboard after shooting and killing a slave. Stout becomes the mate. Jessie meets Ras, a young slave, and saves him, as The Moonlight is shipwrecked, and only they survive. They meet Daniel, a runaway slave, stay with him for a while. His friends take Ras north to a safe place. Daniel gives Jessie directions to return home and he returns to his sister and mother. The Slave Dancer is a story about the adventures of the American slaver, The Moonlight. After reading The Slave Dancer, by Paula Fox, I realized how terrible this book is. I think this book is bad because it is boring and sad. The characters are not interesting; they are mean and grumpy. It is full of hatred and cruelty. Many people are mistreated and are hurt emotionally and physically. No one seems to care for anyone else and when someone dies, he or she is thrown overboard and forgotten, like they'd never existed. The Slave Dancer is an awful book and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.
Rating: Summary: This is a Horrible Book Review: I don't recommend the book The Slave Dancer for anyone. The first reson why I don't like this book because it has very little action and no humor. Secondly I thought there was way too much detail, it explained about everything. The third reson why I didn't like the book was because nothing really happened. This book is also horrible because it is historical fiction which I think gets really boring. All those reasons conclude to why I don't like the book The Slave Dancer. While I was reading the book the Slave Dancer by Paula Fox, I found out about Jesse's adventure on a slaver. In the beginning Jessie, a young boy, gets captured and gets taken on a small ship called the Moonlight. Jessie was taken on a slaver to make slaves dance. Soon after, Jessie was taken to Africa to get the slaves and then afterwards they would sell them for money. The Slave Dancer explains an expedition on an 1840's slaver.
