A man named Daniel stops them. Daniel helps Jessie and Ras get closer to home. This Newberry award book by Paula Fox, explains the sad, emotional experience of Jessie Bollier. The Slave Dancer, by Paula Fox is an emotional, sad Newbery award-winning book. I kind of enjoyed the book, but I felt that Paula Fox used too many bad words. I felt sad and bad for the slaves after understanding what the slaves had to go through. I also felt like it was a little disgusting when she described what was going on. For example, when Purvis is whipped by the captain from being blamed of stealing an egg. Overall, I thought it was a good book, but I wouldn't recommend it to a younger reader. I would rate this book three stars out of five, because of the sadness, and use of bad words. This Newbery award book by Paula Fox, is what you should look for when looking for a Paula Fox book.
Rating: Summary: The Slave Dancer,a.k.a boring. Review: The book The Slave Dancer by Paula Fox was about a 13-year old boy named Jessie, who had many death-defying adventures. Jessie got captured and taken away to the slaver where he was to play music on his fife for slaves. On his journey he meets many crewmembers such as Clay Purvis and the evil Ben Stout. Their mission was to get to Africa on The Moonlight, the slave ship, and get slaves to trade. There was a terrible storm and The Moonlight was shipwrecked. Ras, a slave that is Jessie's age, saves Jessie and gets him to land where they meet an old man named Daniel. After staying a couple of days with Daniel, Jessie is forced to walk back home to New Orleans. In the end, Jessie reunites with his family. After reading The Slave Dancer by Paula Fox, I found it "interesting." What I mean by interesting is that it was boring, really boring. Really, really boring. Rea- okay, you get the picture. The thing is that it explains every single detail from a mast to a piece of cloth. There are some exciting parts, though, like the shipwreck. Oops... Shouldn't have told you that. Well anyway, people who are interested about the slave trade might like this since it's about a slaver and a young boy who was forced to work on it. Overall, I give this book one star since I don't like descriptive book. So, would recommend this for people who like really boring and descriptive books or people who are running out of fire kindling.
Rating: Summary: Man, This Book Stunk Review: In the book, The Slave Dancer, a 13-year-old boy is put through a lot of hard times on a slaver. While he was walking home, Jessie was kidnapped and put on the slaver. He meets Purvis, Captain Cathorn and the rest of the crew, and they set out on their journey to Africa. While the slaves board the ship, Jessie meets one of the slave boys named Ras. On their way home there was a shipwreck in the Cuban seas. After swimming to shore, Jessie and Ras meet an elderly black man named Daniel who saves their lives. After Ras leaves to go north, Jessie walks a long way to his home where he finds his mother and sister. As you can see, The Slave Dancer was a very long book where many things happened. When I read the book The Slave Dancer, I thought it was really dull. First of all, the plot made no sense. It changed too much and I could not follow it. Secondly, the description about where they where and what they saw was really boring. Every little thing was described in too much detail and took up too much of the book. Last, but not least, the setting changed too much. I really could not figure where they were. As you can see, I did not like the book The Slave Dancer.

After reading the book The Slave Dancer, I found it was a boring book. I dislike it because it is too much to remember and it is confusing. It is confusing because I did not know that at the end they landed in Mississippi. I also don't like it because it isn't my kind of book. I am not interested in slaves or historical fiction at all. I also think that it is a bad book because if you read it too fast you will not remember a thing. I would not recommend this book for anyone. I would rate this book, one out of five stars.
Rating: Summary: The Slave Dancer Review Review: After we read the book The Slave Dancer we thought it was a very touching story! In the beginning, while Jessie was living with his mother and his sister, Jessie gets kidnapped. Jessie got captured because Purvis overheard him playing his fife and thought he was good, so he kidnapped him to play on the ship The Moonlight for the slaves. (Because The Moonlight is a slaving ship) Then Jessie boarded The Moonlight and met the crew. They went to Africa to pick up lots of slaves, because they had to bring the slaves to the Spaniard. After The Moonlight dropped off the slaves to the Spaniard there was a horrible storm and The Moonlight got shipwrecked by Mississippi. Then Jessie and his slave friend Ras swam to shore and met an old man named Daniel, who saved their lives by giving them food and drink. After that Ras goes away to the north, and Daniel tells Jessie the way to get back home. Finally at the end of the whole book Jessie gets reunited with his family. In conclusion we thought The Slave Dancer was a very good book. After I read The Slave Dancer I have come to this conclusion: it is a pretty good book about a boy who got kidnapped to dance slaves with his fife. He would play for the slaves on the ship The Moonlight. I didn't really like this book because for one I don't like slavery. The way history treated slaves was horrible. For two I don't really like the characters, because they are always mean and drunk. Finally for three I don't like the way the slaves were treated and how people got whipped. So I've come to a conclusion that the story is well written, but I don't like the subjects that I named. Overall, I would give this well-done book a four and a half-star rating.
Rating: Summary: The Slave Dancer Review: The Slave Dancer by Paula Fox is about a boy and his extraordinary journey on a slave ship. A young boy named Jessie was abducted from his loving family by crew members to play his fife. He had a hard time adjusting to the fact that he would be playing music for the slaves on slave ship, the Moonlight. The Moonlight sailed to Africa to pick up slaves under the captain's strict orders so that he could gather a profit. Jessie disliked the slaves due to the suffering they endured and to make it worse, the slaves were thrown overboard because of a crew members mistake. Due to a terrible storm, Jessie and his new friend Ras had to swim to land where they were found by an old man. The old man helped Jessie and Ras but then sent Ras up north and Jessie home. In conclusion, The Slave Dancer was an interesting story that would be hard to forget. The Slave Dancer by Paula Fox was a book worthy of the Newbery Honor Award. It did have some weak assets, including the fact that all the crew members weren't described as well as they should have been. The writing was extremely rich and painted many different descriptive pictures in my mind. It will be a quick read for almost anyone. I don't think this would be a good beginning chapter book for ages 7-9. As I read it, I came to the conclusion that it was a book for a more mature type of reader.
Rating: Summary: My Review for The Slave Dancer Review: I thought the book The Slave Dancer was a very sad book. There are a lot of emotional periods in this book that I didn't like that much. Jessie is living a poor life in New Orleans, when he is captured by two sailors and was put on a slaver to play on his fife and make the slaves dance for exercise. The captain is mean to Jessie and whips many people. Then there is a horrible storm where Jessie and a young black slave named Ras go into the holds for protection. The ship sinks and Ras and Jessie swim to land while holding on to a trusty log. They get to the island and meet an old slave named Daniel. He takes care of them for a couple of days, but then two men that speak the same language as Ras, take him up north to live a happier life. As for Jessie, he is sent to walk home with only a map and food. He gets to his home and family. If I had to rate this book, I would give it two out of five stars. Rating: Summary: The Slave Dancer Review: The Slave Dancer by Paula Fox is a book that all middle school and high school kids should read because it reveals history that is not found in any textbooks. In 1840, bringing slaves over in slave ships was illegal. On the ship he is exposed to the same conditions as other slaves and crew members. For example the living quarters were extremely small because each person had about one-square foot. The diseases that the slaves had brought when brought on to the boat not killed some of the slaves, killed some of the crew members, too. Because of the diseases, it forced anyone who carried the disease, to be thrown overboard, dead or alive.
Rating: Summary: The greatest book I ever read Review: The stave dancer is about a boy who was tricked and kiddnapped by a butch of rowdy pirates. The pirates are on there way to capture and sell slaves from Africa. The boys job was to play the flute for the slave so they could dance and strengthen their muscels. Its a thriling adventure book. I throught it was a great book and it was my favorite. I recommend this book to 7th graders.
