Rating: Summary: Mars Review: This was a cute, funny,(and sometimes sad)heartwarming story. Having worked with ADD and ADHD kids, I could relate to Joey. This book would be good for children to read with their parents. Many situations in the story could be discussed and learned from. Also this book could help parents (like those of "regular" ed students) volunteering in the classroom, or as scout leaders,Sunday school teachers, etc. to understand how these children operate. I had compassion for Joey and wanted to accept him for who he was. When he was told that he couldn't have shoefly pie because it had too much sugar and to have a piece of apple instead(and all the other kids were having pie),his reaction was all he could do given who he was. May this book open everyone's eyes in some way to help understand and accept the Joey's in our lives who are "wired wrong".
Rating: Summary: I love it! Review: Wow....I thought it was terriffic! I've never read such a funny interesting book in my life. Read it!
Rating: Summary: Very funny Review: Joey Pigza Swallowed the Key is about a boy who has attention deficit disorder. He has medications, but they wear off quickly. When they wear off he can't sit still and he starts acing crazy so he has to go to special ed. to get better. I like this book because it is funny and Joey reminds me of my sister.
Rating: Summary: Bad Stereotypes, false information Review: I was so excited to receive this book as a gift, but after reading it, I wasted no time getting online to write a review of the book. I am a special education administrator and am appauled at the inaccuracy and stereotypes in this book. How is this book supposed to teach tolerance and educate children about such disorders when the book only feeds misperceptions? Students cannot be sent to a special education classroom, in a basement, no less, because they "aren't behaving". I think it is malpractice to print a book that sterotypes and misinforms as much as this book does. I am so dissappointed.
Rating: Summary: Comedy Review: Comedy A couple of things I liked about Joey Pigza Swallowed the Key are that Joey speaks his mind, he learns how to control himself, and the ending was really good. I would like to recommend this book to anyone who likes to read fiction books.
Rating: Summary: Maybe better read by adults? Review: "Joey Pigza Swallowed the Key" (by Jack Gantos) features Joey, an ADHD (emphasis on the H) fourth (maybe fifth?) grader with an abusive grandmother, an absent alcoholic biker father, and a recovering alcoholic mother. As you might guess from the cast, there's a LOT happening, all the time. By the second page, Joey has been put out of his classroom and is impersonating the Tasmanian Devil in the hallway. By the end of chapter two his grandmother has simply walked off and left him. He is on (unspecified) meds, but they only work sometimes and always wear off around lunchtime. Joey /wants/ to be good, and has the best intentions. But he can't stay on task, acts impulsively, and generally ends up in trouble every day. "Before lunch my seat felt like any old hard seat, and I felt like any old kid. But after lunch I felt as if I was sitting on a giant spring and it was all I could do to keep it from launching me head first up into the ceiling. My morning pill was supposed to last all day but it gave out on me. I gripped the bottom of my chair and held tight and watched the second hand on the clock sweep around and around." Joey unintentionally injures himself and his classmates, and is sent to a Special Ed school to learn how to fit into a regular classroom. Through his interactions with the staff and students there he gains some new perspective and, with the help of new medication, is eventually able to begin to return to his mainstream class. This is not a book for the squeamish (I'll just say "running with scissors" and leave it at that) but I liked the ending. The situations and emotions in this book are so intense that I wonder if it works as a kid's book at all -- I think it might be more helpful as a tool to give insight to teachers/spouses/caregivers of ADHD kids and adults.

Rating: Summary: Joey Pigza Swallowed The Key Review: I have read all of the Joey Pigza books, but this one was my favorite. In this book Joey Pigza, a wired little kid with ADHD (attention defecit hyper disorder)is introduced to the reader. Joey Pigza's parents are divorced, just like mine. Joey Pigza isn't the most focused student in school. So his teacher sends him to the special class. He doesn't like this special class at all. When Joey gets to go back to regular class, he trips and cuts off the tip of a girl's nose. After that Joey is forced to go to a special school and his teacher's name is Ed, Special Ed.
Rating: Summary: What will Joey do? Review: Joey Pigza can't stay still. He always has to move. He has ADHD.I would recommend this book to anyone because it is funny and sad in the begining of the book. The author is Jack Ganton. This book is interesting because it is about a boy who can't stay still and his dad ran away and his mom went after him. She came back for Joey. In the end Joey Pigza began to take pills. Did or did not the pills help him?
Rating: Summary: Joey Pigza Swallows the Key Review: In this book Joey Pigza can't sit still and loose control of himself. He has ADHD and so does his grandmother and the dad. Joey has to live with his grandmother and if he can't sit still in school he has to take special-ed class at the new school. Joey wants to go to a new school.
